What say you?

I am all for cancelling the summer Olympics due to this nasty Zika Virus. What can be more important than world health?

Maybe I am partial because I have a family member participating in the Para`s. Maybe I am just a realist and think if you put thousands of exposed people into airplanes and fly them all back home to everywhere all over the world we are pulling off the perfect spread a nasty germ. Don`t we all have enough problems with nasty germs, bacteria and virus`s already?

Where is WHO in all this. Ugh humans so frustrating.

Well, a good supply of DEET repellent should help. The disease, itself is relatively harmless for people who are not pregnant. But, yeah, getting bit bye the mosquito that carries it, and coming home with the virus in your system, and then getting bit by local mosquitoes could be problematic. Can the species of mosquito here carry the same virus?

Most countries don't have mosquitoes, do they ?

Modern air traffic would have spread it before now I suspect.

really Bruv? I had not Idea, I thought those little pests lived everywhere. We have enough of them here to think that way.

I just think it's so sketchy to bring mass humanity together when there is such a health threat then send them back to the motherland. I dunno maybe I am paranoid.

I agree with your concerns, Minks. It would be so disappointing to all the potential participants, but in all sense the Olympic games should be cancelled, and maybe an alternative venue sought so that the games can be staged after a couple more years, away from this Zika Virus. It does seem, also, that some of the buildings etc. may not be completed in time anyway !

Bruv, mosquitos are in most temporate and warmer climates. I don't think they would survive in the far north or the far south, but the rest of the world is vulnerable to these nasty little insects. Have you not heard about the more virulent and larger mosquito getting across the sea to Britain from the continent ? Just keep away from areas of still water, or marshlands. The other thing to watch out for is the short and not so cold winter - won't have killed off many insects, so probably if we get hot spells this summer, we'll get swarms of unwanted insects, maybe even plague quantities ! :yh_ooooo :yh_worry:-5

There is evidence that an infected person can pass it on through sexual contact. That's the reason rory mcilroy has pulled out.

It is only spread by a single species of mosquito.

The virus has been spreading it's range for tens of years along with the mosquito, in hotter climes.

I would trust the health professionals, but I am not a young virile athlete in my prime............allegedly.

It might be time to obliterate the mosquito from the world, might save more lives than chasing ISIS, what with all the diseases they cause.

There is a Florida company that wants to do exactly that. They say they can create a genetically modified mosquito that would mate with the zika carrying species and cause it to die out. They want government funding.

Genetically modified mosquitoes - what could possibly go wrong?

It doesn't need super new techniques, just education, and concerted international cooperation, and a bit of cash.

Well, there appears to be two species that are specifically carriers of the zika, and other similar virus.

Unfortunately, those two species have made their way across the planet.

Somehow, I don't see them wiping out the mosquito population before the Olympics kick off.

How long has that been going on there Magenta? And how are the predator fairing, I am guessing because mosquitoes are a food source to other beasties these other critters are not suffering, they are eating the new version of mosquitoes?

It's quite fascinating that we can alter mother nature like this.

Within the last day or so ive heard what the bio guys did with infestations of fire ants, a mite that attacks european bees but leave asian bees alone and theyve had to take care of zika outbreaks in QLD. Ive known this kind of thing happening since i was a kid. Eradication is the best option here. The authorities are extremely strict in Australia, as johnny Depp found out..

I know people who contracted Ross river fever, lymes desease.

A good place to look for the practices that protect us is probably found on government public health sites
