this morning i had a phone call from Bothwell waking me to tell me my sheriff had been in a bad accident (he reads my local paper online) ....it seems a drunk driver had hit the sheriff at 11 pm last night (i was not listening to scanner), and he was life-flighted to a metropolitan hospital. my sheriff was in ICU....i called booking and they said he was out of hospital, now i hear he is still in ICU. my sheriff was not wearing his seat belt. i am sure that will be the subject of much discussion. and i sure as heck would hate to be the drunk driver who hit the county sheriff! anyway, i really think the world of him, and am hopeful he will be back with us soon. .......AND PLEASE, WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT!.............

How much will the fact that he wasn't wearing a seat belt work against him, LC? I hope he's going to be all right, and I hope they throw the book at the drunk idiot!

Oh what a pity sorry to hear the news LC. I sure hope they just concentrate on the drunk at this point. Mind you how could a member of law enforcement not be belted? I wish him well in any case.

Thank you both...he is such an honorable man, i expect him to insist on being cited. Florida Highway Patrol was the investigating agency, not us.

LC, was he in his personal vehicle? Do you know? 'Cause I thought

I'm pullin' for him to get better fast!

he was in a dept. vehicle, we generally are supposed to buckle up according to our policy, but do we always? no. sometimes you need to exit vehicle FAST. some locals are kicking and screaming that our dept. shouldn't pay the medical bills because of it. FHP refused to cite him. word tonight is he may need some surgery. thanks for all the kind thoughts!

Thankyou Turbo!

he is so approachable, our last sheriff not so much. i feel free to email him, and he always answers. we really are supposed to go through the chain of command, not talk to him except through our LT, when he took office Jan. 1, we all had to be resworn. he called me at home , knowing i had been in hospital, and told me to come to his office when i felt up to it and he would swear me. Bothwell was here with me, we both went, and he was absolutely gracious, swore me himself. i was very touched.

hi, thankyou for asking....this is from today's local paper, with the names removed...a lot of us deputies went to visit him, it was a scary sight at the hospital! LOL
sheriff's condition improving
County Sheriff is in good spirits and looking well, Sheriff's Office spokesman said after visiting the sheriff Thursday.
he is recovering at ---- hospital from a head-on collision Monday night with a driver whom the Florida Highway Patrol says may have been under the influence of alcohol. he is in a regular room, having been moved from intensive care.
he will be having surgery on his leg, which is broken in three places. The date for his surgery has not been set yet pending evaluation of his condition over the weekend,
The other driver is in fair condition, the hospital said. The highway patrol is continuing its investigation.
