So, my neighbors directly behind me allow their dog to bark....and bark....and bark, endlessly, incessantly, constantly. Till the wee hours of the morning. ALL THE TIME.

I timed the barking sessions a couple times, being wide awake at 3 a.m. anyway, unable to sleep because of...yep, you guessed it...the freakin' BARKING. The last time I checked, the dog had been barking for 3 hours and 40 minutes. No exaggeration at all. I started timing at 11:15 and sometime around 2:55 the barking stopped.

So. Tonight I went around the block and dropped a note in their mailbox to the effect of: "Your dog barks at ALL HOURS of the night, frequently past 3 a.m. It is highly thoughtless to your neighbors and if it continues, we will begin calling the police EVERY night and animal control EVERY day."

If you received such a note in your mailbox, what would you do? Do you think I handled this appropriately? I nixed the first idea I had to handle this, and won't tell you what it was, though a couple of you can probably guess what it was.

I'm ticked. I could not imagine allowing my dog to keep my neighbors up this way and it really p!sses me off that people are so damn thoughtless.

Oh BR, you have NO idea how I feel for you! Thank goodness it's been

years but I have had to deal with this before. The one thing I hate is

an incessant barker and I feel so badly for the poor puppers. It's neglect,

plain and simple.

That I sympathize doesn't help you get your sleep, I know. But I have to tell

you I've gone the whole note in the mailbox/call the cops route and it's

such a long one! Even recorded the son of a bee-ach and played it

back for the owner, who believe it or not said "Oh he's just playing"!!!

:-5

Barking dogs are very low priority. We finally did get one taken away

(the landlord left it chained in the backyard of an empty house to

"protect" it!) Freakin' idiots it makes me INSANE. I don't know if this person

can figure out where you are or if you worry about retaliation, but please

be careful.

Do you know the laws in your area? Some places have to have so many

reports by an officer (like three I think some of them are) and the dog

actually has to be barking when the officer gets there and hears it.

Much good luck to you in dealing with this, and DO let us know the minute

it gets resolved, I will worry!!

Wow--your situation is awful! I thought I had it bad with a dog up the street that has literally been barking for 7 yrs.....but at least he is UP the street and after the first 2-3 yrs I realized I didn't notice it anymore!! Pretty sad...but you have it practically in your backyard! We called the police on a regular basis on the dog here, but nothing ever got done.....one family even moved away because of the dog! Police basically told us pressing charges against the dog owner was only way for them to put more pressure on them. This would mean signing the charges and having to go to court and all.....whole thing would be so time consuming and I started to get madder ...But in the end we did not press charges and this was around the time I started to not hear it anymore unless I tried. Can you see why the dog is barking? Is he standing at the door wanting in or is there a cat in a tree? Something that can be changed to change his behavior?? If he just wants in the house and he is out there barking for that long, I would have to wonder if this dog is being neglected? Can you see if he has food/water available and shelter? And is he tied up? Your best bet is to make a report with police about possible negligent care. I think your note was civil and to the point--lets see if it gets results!! Keep us posted!!

I love all the ideas!

Val, I do think the dog is, if not neglected, then not given much attention. It's horrible, because I LOVE dogs, you know that! I've seen the couple that lives there, they are young, and probably oblivious. As for retaliation, that is not a worry. My house is known in the neighborhood because of all the bikers around all the time. I could leave my car running in the driveway with a sack of money on the seat and no one would bother it.

The law in my area states that no "disturbing" noise past 10 p.m. I have spoken with some other neighbors about it, and we are in agreement. It was after I knew I wasn't the only one being kept up that I left the note.

Robinseggs, the day I move away from my home because if a dog, is the day I go with my first plan for dealing with it. It is SO frustrating to me that people are so thoughtless. I will certainly let you know how tomorrow goes, after they get that note.

nvalleyvee and Carla, if I had the 70 bucks to blow on a bark collar, I'd happily send them a gift! I've never used one, but know some who have had some success with it. Not sure I like them, but I'm willing to try anything for a night of undisturbed sleep!

We have a well mannered dalmation, that we dubbed 'spotty' who lives next door. We're pretty lucky. He only barks when he see's something move. :wah: Like the upstairs neighbors cat!

Seriously though, I hope the letter works. I mean if it's going to bark all night, the least they can do is let it bark inside it's own house.

BR, you crack me up! "Car running in the driveway with a sack of money

on the seat"!! I figured it would probably be something like that.

Tamsen doesn't bark much any more but I have a "Three bark" rule.

Wish other people would do the same.

The dog behind you needs to be re-homed or get daily walks, Kongs,

and lots of toys. To leave a pack animal out all night just isn't

right.

Waiting to hear how last night went...

If the letter doesn't work, calling the cops don't work, I'd get their phone number and when the dog is barking at 2 a.m. I'd call and say, "Good morning! Your dog's barking is keeping me awake and I think he is saying he wants you to stay awake with him too!"

When we moved into a new home, our boxer/husky mix (and that's a whole other story..!!!) started barking at the neighbor's dalmation. Right away we knew we had to do something. We too, had a 3 bark rule and we would bring him in. We eventually bought a bark collar because we had no other options....and we are thoughtful neighbors. Yes--it was expensive but it worked for awhile. Pretty soon our pooch figured out the level of "loud" that he could bark w/out setting the darn thing off! He was smart!! The resulting pathetic bark sounded something other than canine--more like a cat trying to bark!! I believe some people may think the collars are inhumane, but these same people frown upon people who can't keep their dogs due to problems like these! So what's a responsible person to do??!! LOL

I've got an idea that actually works....go straight to the problem.

I had the same exact trouble with my new neighbors. So I got a supersoaker water gun. I went outside and let the dog get right up to the fence then I whistled a little tune and SHOT THE B****RD RIGHT IN THE FACE!

You see, the dog thinks he's king in his own little yard. If you show him that you can affect him inside his boundries, his pack-deference instincts kick in and you become the pack-master.

I did this over the course of about a week, and by the next week all I had to do was whistle the tune and the dog took off for the far corner of the yard and shut right up!

It was so successful, that now I can actually whistle inside my house and he shuts up...permanently. As a matter of fact, he doesn't bark much at all anymore! :wah:

You guys are great! By the way, Peg, your plan seemed like such a good idea, I did get their phone number. Funny, you can enter an address at www.411.com and if they are listed, you get a phone number! The dog did not bark for long last night, they must have brought it in, but I'm not sure about tonight. We will see. If it does, you can bet they will be getting a call! Thanks for all the tips, gang!

Jives, did you have an incessant barker or did the dog just bark when

you went outside? Just curious. Incessant barking is something

different than "intruder alert" barking. Interesting way to solve the

problem.

I just talked to the dog next door. He'd bark a couple times and I'd

just say "T-bone it's me good boy" and he quits. Now he almost never

barks at me.

Good point Val, and just so you all know, my neightbor's dog barked when the wind blew, if he saw something, if he didn't see something...he probably barks at his own farts.

Oiy BR I pity you so much. Nothing worse than having your sleep interupted never mind by the stupidity of neighbors.

Sounds like these folks are not worthy of their dog, pity the dog knows no better. Nixt time run over to their house and just let the dog out of the yard. hehehehehe

Here we are told to document all incidents, then let the owners know of the disturbance if they fail to deal with it, we call animal control.

It is plain old bad irriesponsible owners. Good luck what ever you find works.

I would add some vinegar to the water - make it a 10% solution. 1 part vinegar to 9 parts water. It only stings a little bit but it gets their attention!

So Babyrider, what's going on with the barking? Any new developments? I don't think I would do any of the spray bottle things to the dog or anything else that is physical for that matter......afterall, he is just a dog doing what God made him to do when he is frustrated. It is not his fault he got bad owners. I actually feel really sorry for him. I think I would start looking for a new home for him....and when you find a willing taker, call the owners and tell them in a very nice way that you could take their problem off their hands......Sounds to me like they wouldn't care much anyway--would probably be relieved since they already have banished him to the backyard. Probably a cute puppy that got big and they lost interest. Also--just curious did they have a new baby recently? This is usually one ridiculous reason for the being banished to the backyard...So sad.

Hey, robinseggs...Physical punishment is generally not understood by dogs, so no, I wouldn't try anything like that with the dog. The owners on the other hand.... :yh_rotfl

I sure as hell don't have the time to find a new home for the dog, I just want them to make it shut up after 10 p.m. or so. I don't know the people, just seen them out the window now and then.

I haven't heard the dog since I was sure they got the note. Hopefully this will be the end of it.
