That is amazing!!
We must have a mathematician on board that has an explanation.

Well I've tried it again a few times out of curiousity!!
If I do the subtraction and look at that no and sign, the correct sign comes up.
If I do the subtraction and then click on the sphere, the sign that comes up is not the correct sign!!
The mind boggles!!!

Read it in the tea leaves this morning
Then maybe you could explain it to us mortals? :yh_wink
Seriously, I hope someone comes along who can explain how this works...EVERY time. :yh_ooooo
Betty, what do you mean? Are you not looking at the sign before you click the sphere and then it gives you the wrong one?

Yep, if I don't check what sign it should be and just click the sphere it throws up the wrong one.
Hang on need to go check whether these signs move with every click now!!!:wah:
No they don't change!!

It was right the first time and then wrong several times after that - my bad - I kept subtracting the same number from the first time. After I reread the directions it worked every time. I think I hear Twilight Zone music playing in the background.

it took me a few minutes to figure it out. but it's pretty easy. it's just math. pure and simple. the reason it seems like it's reading your mind is that they rotate the symbols with each iteration, so that the limited, fixed set of answers that can come up will reflect a different symbol, making it seem like it figured out what you thought up. there's a limited number of possible answers. think about it.
follow along:
49 - (4+9) is 49 - 13. result, 36.
48 - (4+8) is 48 - 12. result, 36
47 - (4+7) is 47 - 11. result, 36.
46 - (4+6) is 46 - 10. result, 36.
45 - (4+5) is 45 - 9. result, 36.
44 - (4+4) is 44 - 8. result, 36.
43 - (4+3) is 43 - 7. result, 36.
42 - (4+2) is 42 - 6. result, 36.
41 - (4+1) is 41 - 5. result, 36.
40 - (4+0) is 40 - 4. result, 36.
start again at 39, same formula.
39 - (3+9) is 39 - 12. result 27.
38 - (3+8) is 38 - 11. result 27.
37 - (3+7) is 37 - 10. result 27.
36 - (3+6) is 36 - 9. result 27.
and on and on. so there's a fixed set of possible answers to the question. all they have to do is make the symbol the same for those results, and it'll seem like it's reading your mind. the reason the symbol changes is as i described - they change the symbols that match to the different results each time you 'play', so the symbol changes even though the answer doesn't.
clear as mud?
you'll note also that the result, when you add the two numbers together, always adds up to 9: 36, 3+6. 27, 2+7. i know there's some mathematical concept associated with that. but seeing as math is about my worst subject, i haven't a clue.
but you'll find that the answers for the 'nineties' are 81, the 'eighties' are 72, the 'seventies' 63, the 'sixties' 54, the 'fifties' 45, the 'forties' 36, the 'thirties' 27, the 'twenties' 18, and the 'tens' 9. since they only 'allow' you to pick two digit numbers, that's the entire set. all the other symbols are just randomly tossed in.

Well it worked for me freaky if you ask me..
Far, Maybe it's not working for you because something isn't installed on your computer that will allow it to work, may JAVA, or an Active-X plugin..???a :-2

Paul, you realize that every single member who tried this saw your name in the "last poster" column and rushed over to see what you said, right?
It's so simple, it's laughable. But I do get a kick out of how you said "It took me a few minutes to figure it out..." while the rest of us were baffled. Thanks for the info, it makes sense now!!!

it's a "Flash" animation - you have to have the Flash plugin installed in your browser to be able to run it, otherwise you just get a static image. you may even have flash installed - but it might be blocked by anti-bad-things software you have installed on your PC, or by highly restrictive browser settings.

Far - your math skills have made you a bad contestant for the "psychic" ball! :wah:
To simplify anastrophe's explanation, your answer will always result in 9 or a multiple of 9 - and all the symbols for these are always the same. 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81 are always a book, or candle or whatever symbol.

Here you go, this was compliments of Joe
This is how to beat the magic.
Stage one: Do the same easy sum a few times, ie 10 - (1 + 0) = 9. Notice how for each new attempt the symbol for 9 is different, while all the other symbols don't change. This hides the fact that 9 is important here.
Stage two: Do several sums without clicking the crystal ball. Note how for every sum done in each multiple of 10 the answer was the same.
To prove what I mean:
10 - (1+0) = 9 20 - (2+0) = 18 30 - (3+1) = 27 etc.
11 - (1+1) = 9 21 - (2+1) = 18 31 - (3+1) = 27
12 - (1+2) = 9 22 - (2+2) = 18 32 - (3+2) = 27
etc etc etc
Stage three: note how every answer is a multiple of 9. This is because any 2 digit number less the sum of the digits is a multiple of 9.
Stage four: repeat the process down to a single digit, & note you always end on a 9. Ie
9 = 9
^
18 - (1+8 ) = 9
^
27 - (2+7) = 18
^
36 - (3+6) = 27
etc.
Stage five: test the outcome. See what the symbol for 9 is each new time, & click the ball. Note that you get this symbol in the ball each time.

I'm really glad I didn't post an hour ago and tell everyone that it didn't work for me. I just realised that I was looking at the symbol for my original number instead of the symbol for the new number. Anyway it worked this time :-5
