My husband and I took our almost three year old to an orientation at the head start program here in my town. First they did hieght and weight which wasn't a big deal. My son is 35lbs and 38 inches. ( No getting him into six flags free anymore) lol)
Anyway then he had a hearing test done, and we found out he is hyper senstive to sound. Well I knew that already. He cried when the nurse gave him the test. He has problem with anything with a motor on it, such as Ie. A Vacum cleaner and a tooth brush. An electric razer. When Doug is here he has to use a regular razor and hates that. I mean Doug.
Then we went to a vision test were Jake did not want to coraperate whats so ever. Then wwe went for the dredded developemental test. And I will tell you I think it was Just a little over the TOP!! They asked my almost three yearold about anologies. Well you get point. and then they made walk on this ribbon thing straight. Then the teacher asked if he could jump over it. He did that of corse. Then she asked him to draw a straight line,(Which I thought was resemable, then a cross (which I thought that was a little NUTS) and a cicle. which I could understand.
Then he asked him if he could put these tiny blue blocks on top, (I thiknk their was six) and they al fell he could only do maybe four. I think hay that's great. Then she had these cards one had a picture of duck, another an apple and another a house. Jake looked at them and then she tuned them face down and asked which one was the duck and which one was house and so fourth, then he didn't do it. ( and I am thinking what he is phsic or something. HE"S ONLY 35 months OLD. Thats rediculas :-5
Then she showed him a ball and he threw it. You know this kid a six months knew how to through a ball. every day he does something NEW. He this women made me feel like he was stupid. :-5
I am going to talkl to my pedi about this. I really am.:-5 uugh

I think your son has some learning disabilities and it might be inherited from you.

KM Hello there!! All of these things are very normal skills - they were testing him on..Our Area Education Agency uses the same things...
For example: the line thing and jumping is to test for large motor skills - which is very normal- along with the ball throwing...
The block thing was small motor and eye coordination...it lets them watch to see if the finger and thumb are working together---which is really important at that age...
the drawing was normal also- we use the same things..the circle / X / and the line- they are testing for pencil holding (again small motor) and the lines are eye coordination of two lines crossing..
the cards are for memory and recognition skills... Don't worry about anything - including the hearing tests.. a lot of kids that we tested are very nervous and at that age don't like noises...Can I ask? is he your first child? sometimes that has a lot to do with it.. but as a mom -I too would check with the Peds Doc..

Good Luck with him-- he sounds like a perfectly normal child and they should have not made you doubt anything they did with him - because they should have been explaining everything!

They may not have expected him to stack all the blocks, just wanted to see how many he could stack. Just because they showed him the cards, does not mean they expected him to remember. If you are already uncomfortable with it, I wouldn't send him yet. There's always next year.

First of all I like to address the one who said I might have learning dissibilties. Just because I have hard time spelling does not mean i have learning disibilities. I hate to spell. I don't have any learning disbilities and neither does my kid. Who are you judge me. You don't even know me. Furthermore I just finished writting a book. It's pending puplication.
If my son had learning dissibilties they would have found them along time ago. He has already been evaulated by people such as birth to three (when My daughter got involed with them) So did an agency here in my town which deals wilth children, When I had a parent aide. He always scored ahead of any child they tested. He knows how to build with Mega Blocks. SO I am confident he does not have any learning disbilities.
But they did fail him. They said they would retest. When their was not any distractions to disrupted him.:-5

You can always put your child in a private preschool, there must be many in your area. And there are co-op ones too. They usually do not have that extensive baseline tests, but they will monitor his progress as the program goes into the school year.
(psst, we all make spelling mistakes-I do loads and publish alot, but it's always different on the computer when you're typing in a hurry! I can see everyone checking my spelling from now on-my students get bonus points when they catch a mistake on the board, hey, it means they're paying attention and learning! I just laugh and say good for them!)

Yes this whole town is just one great big school. We have about eight elementry schools and one is being built. We have two high schools. Big ones. We have to elementry schools on the same street. We have 10 daycare facilitiies . One big Middle schoool, Named after a dead president.
We have to numerous to count daycare, as well as a Preschool academy here and their are many more. As well as head Start. And we have a community college. And in the next town where I am oringinally from there is a private prep acadmey. so you see I have many choices. We choose head start because it's close to our house, right up the back driveway. LOCATION LOCATION < LOCATION means everything when gas is this high.:driving:
And before I am asked , I prefer driving him myself. When should the program pick him up when I am so close. Why should they waste their funding if I am right there. GAs is big thing with me. I least unlike some people here care about people and there gas problems. Not any of you responding to this thread. But they know who they are.

In Illinois they have a office that is called Four Rivers that test all children before they go to preschool. I never took my kids to any testing as it was not required.
I went to a meeting where a very sweet lady told us that the results of the tests went in their files and stayed with them all through their school years. Therefore the children that did not pass the tests were labeled and that label followed them thru thirteen years of school. No thank-you my kids were not going to be labeled by some tests that they may or may not of passed. By the way all four of my kids have college degrees.

Why are you so defensive??
Your post on learning disabilities is offensive to those of us with children who have these problems. Learning disabilities are not a contagious disease to be feared. They are something to be worked on to improve that persons quality of life.
My son failed lots of tests and as a first time mother I was saddened that things weren't quite right, but there's no point being defensive and angry, help him to acheive these goals as I have helped my son to reach his own goals.
I have fought with my local education department to get my son into mainstream school and to keep him there, let's hope he doesn't run into too many like you with your attitude of disgust at those less fortunate.

-Hi,
-You might want to think about the home schooling, I was all for it, I have one child and you want to talk about over protective. Look it up in the dictionary and there is a picture of me! The last two years have been torture lightening up, but I did it, and now my child can breath easier and so can I, When they tested your son, remember they are not comparing him to the other children that were there that evening, they are measuring where he is at, and I dont agree about learning disabilities showing up by age 3 , I am in the medical field, and have held several positions in the medical field, learning diabilities , yes usually show early, but not all of them at age 3, so you might want to keep an open ,mind. (no one is saying your lil one has any)
-If you home school, make sure that your child has access to alot of children his age and alittle older, social develpment is important, also if you decide on this, you need to understand that you are in it for the long hall, that means all the way to 12th grade, and what you teach, an how, is going to affect his sat scores.
He's 3 now, but are you ready to make sure he/she doesnt suffer from your lack of knowledge on what he should know for each grade, it can happen.
-Best of luck
-Hope everything works out

For your imformation, I have a 12 year old daughter you is very learning disabled and and 19 month old daughter who is learning disabled and physically as well. I am just sick to death of people, school teacher's and otheres labeling children disabled just because they have a family history of it, or because they don't do what the teacher want's them to do right on the spot.
My husband is learning disabled. I was told I was when I was a child and they turned out to be wrong. So EXUSE ME, if I have an opion. About some teacher who just meant my son for the first time ever decideing because he couldn't walk a straight a line, or put six blocks on top or each othere(ANd by the way he he put eight of them on top of each othere for me without any help) or do some picture thing. That he is learning disabled. I sit on a board of Parents who are against teachers who do that.
Believe me when I tell you I have had alot of experience with Teachers putting labels on kids who do not need them. I am not being the one offensive here. MY mother is a n emotional disabled person. OK . So know I don't thinnk it's somekind of disease. PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
I also have worked very closely w/ Department of Mental retardation, and the birth the three program.
