I've noticed here that sometimes people are posting articles or things from other sites without putting them in quotes and acknowleging the source. I was taught that is a BIG no no...one it's confusing as you have no idea who is actually doing the writing..the person posting or someone posting, 2. because of copy write laws.
That is 'allowed' here?

this has been discussed at length previously.
when posting copyrighted material, one *should* provide attribution, if only as a courtesy. however, under most circumstances, what is posted here falls within Fair Use.
but beyond that, the FG administrators cannot take responsibility for any given posts conformity with copyright law. if someone is in violation of someone else's copyright, then the copyright holder is welcome to contact us regarding the material's disposition, and we'll be happy to address the matter.
we do not, however, have an obligation to act as policemen here. if you see something you believe is in violation of someone else's copyright, then by all means, contact the copyright holder and let them know.
so no, it's not a matter of it being 'allowed' here. the onus is not on us to parse every posting for violation of copyright. the onus is on us to remove copyrighted material if the copyright holder makes a clear claim; we're happy to do so under such circumstances.

Ok, I was just asking. I find it confusing when someone posts a whole article as if it's their own... you think it's them 'talking' but it's not. I certainly wasn't implying that I would report anyone... Again, it was just a question, lol.

I'm sure 98% understand your meaning. It's just good etiquette.

sorry if i came off strongly there. it's a delicate issue. too often, people presume that a forum's moderators are de facto forum police. so it hits a nerve with me.
I HATE COPS!!!!!

Well, yes, it is a smidge difficult. Thank you. To tell you the truth there was a particular thread that bothered me today. I had to read the initial post two or three times to realize that the person had posted something from some other site but never gave a link or let anyone know that it wasn't his own words. I'm sure those that know the poster understand and know, but, hey...being a newbie it took me a while. I've not joined in the thread.
I will tell you all something.... I've felt pretty comfortable here. I don't particularly care for being heavily moderated..I AM an adult, but as has been stated, I am a newbie. I have no clue who's going to get insulted or know the nuances of what I type and my personality. I also will say that there hasn't been a board that I went into and felt quite as comfortable as I do here. I'm still checking things out..hence the question. And the same with my impression for you guys.
Thank you all for your explanation. I think I'll just jump in! What the heck are you gonna do...come throught the screen?

Actually, we often don't know. Generally speaking for myself, If it's long and well-written (not rambling) I assume it came from somewhere else. Posting here is usually on the fly and I don't think we have any savants here.

I got very comfortable here very quickly. I haven't been in an opinion-type forum since ye olde BBS days where we phoned a friend's computer directly, one at a time, to read and post. Every one of us knew almost everyone else personally. Here's a different story, but I make friends quickly. I find that, for me, it's best to assume it's okay with the other guy and be quick with an apology if I'm wrong.
Glad you've found us!
