So I just got back from the dollar store, where I came across the meanest old bag in the friggin' city.

There we are, standing in line at the check-out, about 9 or 10 of us since there's only one register open. No one seems in too much of a hurry, and a few of us are griping about gas prices and the heat. Anyway, another employee comes to open another lane and a bunch of us move to her line. From the first line, the lady who was next in line looks over at the girl who ended up first in the other line and yells, "BITCH!!" The girl being called names says, "Hey, if you want to be next, be my guest, you didn't move so I figured I would!" The old bag comes over muttering and puts her stuff on the conveyer belt talking about how "young people these days need to learn manners...yada yada yada..." The poor girl is trying to explain herself but the old bag won't hear it, so, me being me, I go over to her stuff and start pawing through it. The bag looks at me and says, "What do you think you're doing??" To which I answered, "I was just thinking maybe you'd come to the dollar store for a personality and haven't had time to put it on yet!!"

Everyone in the line behind me starts cracking up and the old hag turns purple with rage and leaves.

So. The question of the day is: Is it just me or do some old folks think they have a right to act like @ssholes just because they're old??

WOW!! I wish I could have said something like that MANY TIMES. I typically just bite my tongue and kick myself for 3 hours for not saying anything. I snorted when I read the post...laughing so hard...and I'm not a snorter.

Now...while I'm kicking myself for not saying something...I think about my grandma. When she was very sick and in the hospital, her new Dr. came in and my mother, sister and I were fit to be tied when he left. The Dr. WAS SOOO RUDE! My grandma said, "now girls, don't come down too hard on him...you don't know what that man deals with...he may have just come from a horrible surgury...or one of his patient's may have passed away". My grandma was so sick...and she came up with those kind things to say. That is just the kind of woman she is.

Generally, no...I don't think ANYONE has a right to be rude to anyone like that. However, my grandma would disagree and say we just don't know what is going on in their life.

Now...I LOVE THE DOLLAR STORE! I feel soooo powerful when I enter! I can get anything in the store that I want. THAT ROCKS!

florida is heavily populated with the elderly...and many of them are irascible, nasty, mean and feel entitled to be insulting. i try to blame depression, ill-health and meds.

I think that is the mind set in "some" elderly people, especially my mothers. She'll tell you straight out that she's lived a long time and if people don't like her attitude they can stick it! Well, that didn't float with me and I told her if she chooses to be rude and obnoxious to others, she learn to sit home a lot. The advantage I have over this...she has never driven a day in her life, so she is dependant on me to get her where she needs to go. Behave or be left behind!

And re: being called a BITCH....I usually smile and thank that person for calling me that and explain why when they are confused by such a graceful response to their negativity. B=Babe I=In T=Total C=Control of H=Herself!

Geez BR - I always thought my job at Petco was to put ass*oles in their place, especially when they were in line for check out . I took this particular part of my job personally and as comic relief to my day. I got written up many times but never so bad they sould fire me - after all I only said what the rest of the managers wanted to say. Where is ACC?

Many rude people have been rude all their life, young rude, turns into old rude.

But you do have to be careful with the old rudes, because you never know when/if that old rude may just hit you with their cane! :wah:

Sorry I'm late. I'm here, but I don't see a connection with the post & my name. :-2

In Japan, famous for meek polite people, older ladies say what's on their minds. They call it obaterien. The will have a whole hour show on TV following a couple of ladies on a shopping spree complaining about prices, eating sushi that reminds them of a time when ... then calling out to the chef to ask what his family line is, because his sushi is so good, or bad, or whatever. It's really funny, even if you don't speak the language. :)
