Hello everybody,

My name is Jody. I was looking for a website where I can talk to a lot of different people and mabye make some new online pen-pals and I came across this one. I am now living in Indiana, but my husband and 2 dogs plan on moving to Florida next year. We have been wanting to move to Florida for some time now.

My interests are collecting lighthouses, coca-cola items, playing cards, walking on the beach (when I am visiting my mother in Florida), breathing, writing pen-pals, listing to the radio, staying fit, and much more...

Right now I am a homemaker. I love takeing care of our house and just being there for my hubby. I am very excited to find this website and look forward to people writting and talking with me on line.:)

Welcome Jody, I'm sure you will enjoy being in the garden, always someone around and so many things to discuss.

Aren't lighthouses a bit big to collect? :wah:

Lady Cop,

When my hubby and I move we are planning on moving to St. Augustine, Florida. Every time we go to Florida we visit St.Augustine and we just love it. Another thing about Florida that we like is that it is pet friendly.

Lady Cop,

Is there any way I can get your regular email address and we can discuss this moving to Florida issue in our internet email address?

Alright that is fine with me. Thank You for being honest with me Lady Cop. I was just wondering if you know of any apartment complexes and websites in St. Augustine that I can go on to find out about the apartment living down there. When we move we will be looking for an apartment complex to move into, not a home. I would appreciate it to the fullest if u could help me out with this one. Thank You.

My second was that your electricity bill must be humongous!

And I bet your neighbours love you too!

Mind you, you wouldn't have a problem keeping fit with all those stairs! :-4

PS I liked your hobby of Breathing! Thats a hobby of mine too! :D

I liked your post! Welcome to the Garden - breathe in the scents of autumn in the Garden. Cya. :-6

Welcome! I think you have found a place you will enjoy.

I'm retired Coast Guard and actually had oversight on the restoration of Cape Disappointment Light House. Do you know where that is?

Hello folks.

Perhaps you might start with St. Augustine Chamber of Commerce and ask them to give you the phone numbers or e-mail addresses of a few real estate agents in the area. Most real estate companies usually do a lot of the property management work for apartment complexes, condo and townhouse rentals, etc. In talking with you a few of them they will probably give you some clues regarding the best places to start looking. then I'd make an advance trip and check out few places.

I have lived in central Florida for 22 yrs. and after visiting St. Augustine a few times I wished we had chosen it as our residence instead. But then after all the hurricanes last year, I was glad that we didn't choose a coastal city to live. Even inland during Hurricane Frances and then Jeanne, we still had 85, 90 mph winds hour after hour after hour. It's creepy to watch trees crashing down all around your home, shingles flying off, sitting in the dark while the house trembles and shakes, raing slashing sideways for 30 hrs. Then all the homeowners policies in Fla. have a 5 percent wind deductible clause. This means that if your house is worth 100,000, they deduct 5 percent of the total cost of your home as the deductible, so you're left paying a hefty price to make all your own repairs. Then I'll dare you to find a roofer when a million other people have had their roofs blown off also.

I hope that maybe you're only planning to be snowbirds. Have you been to St. Augstine in the summer? Fla. feels like hell in the summer. The humidity is about 95 percent from May to October, temperatures in the nineties everyday. The only time you can stand to go for a walk is at about 6 am. Of course on the east coast you'll have a beach. Try to find an apartment that at least has a nice pool area so that you can stand to be outdoors. Plan to battle fleas on your dogs in the summer. You have to use Frontline or Advantage on your dogs monthly or fleas will infest your carpets. And get ready for giant flying cockroaches, Florida's other official state bird. Ha ha.

The one thing that I miss in Florida is that real sense of community. Florida is a transient sort of place. That is, everyone is from someplace else. The population if very fluid, it keeps changing. Most of the state is elderly and in health care, we joke that the whole state is God's waiting room. Plan not to see a diversity of ages, because there aren't many kids here, or even people in their thirties or forties. Everyone here is an old duffer. Health care isn't the greatest because the nursing shortage is horrible. If you plan to have elective surgery or something, get it done up north, you'll have a better experience. You won't find the same serious sort of work ethic here in Fla. that you'll find in the midwest, for example. People working here often just don't give a crap whether they do a good job or not. There is no protestant work ethic here. At work my superiors keep trying to figure out how to clone me to get more employee like myself. I jokingly tell them,"import some more of your employees from Wisconsin or Iowa, they still know how to work up there."

That's about it. St. Augustine is a nice place. But hang onto your northern real estate if you can afford it.
