They took my hubby's dad by ambulance to Omaha last night with chest pain..HE had been fighting bronchitis for 7 weeks....so the hillbilly hospital thought anyways....They did some tests of course, and found fluid in his lungs, and around his heart..the echo this morning showed only 20% of his heart was functioning..He is only 60 and has always been super active...He goes in for surgery tomorrow if they can get the fluid out..The gave him a massive dose of lasix? last night before we left around 12:00 and only got 600 cc out of him by morning, they feel his kidneys are affected now because he had been treated wrong for so long. Please say one for him and us - he goes in at 9 am...

Also, update on our cousin that passed away unexpectedly last week...she had gotten a kidney infection that was infected with ecoli..it went to her spinal cord and then to the brain...if thats how I understand it..they told her mom today that even if she had gotten to the hospital -her brain was so full of bacteria from the infected spinal cord fluid that there would have been nothing they could have done...How weird is that? I have never heard of such thing..but at least it was not drugs or a heredity thing that her little sisters have to worry about forever...:(

Well....sucky day to say the least....they took him in and were back with in 20 minutes...He has a blood clot in his heart on the left side, which if there has to be one - thats the best place they said...The 3 main arteries in the heart - 2 are 100% blocked and the last is 50% - they backed out and said he would have to have a bi-pass..ok we could deal with that right? Well then the heart surgeon came in to tell us he is not a candidate for the surgery because of health problems with his lungs...Now what? I want him to go to Mercy in Des Moines for a second opinion but they are so set in their ways...His wife of 34 years has NEVER seen him cry- even when his own parents and brother passed away....well she did today. Our hearts are heavy and hoping for something else to happen that could fix this for him. He has some more tests tomorrow and I guess we will know more... thanks for the prayers...:-4

are stents an option? did they mention them? less invasive, don't need sternum broken, i had three put into three coronary arteries. they go in through femoral artery, lungs not involved.

I guess I didn't say it right yesterday - when they took him down thats what he went for was an angiogram - and they could not do the angioplasty because of the lung's being full of fluid. They also said the heart was very damaged and that a quad bi-pass would be necessary - but then said he wasn't healthy enough for it...But UPDATE for today is- he had another sort of test and another Echo and they are seeing a slight improvement from just being On the eh medicine..the fluid is slowly coming off and in the morning they are going to take him down again and do a Tubular Echo? Full body the way it sounds, to check him from front to back...( I went home to get some work done again this afternoon..so I didn't quite understand it) I will NEVER let any family member go to a learning hospital again...we have 6 doctors come in at once..a group with the pulmonologist, the cardiac heart surgeon, and the respiratory doctor...I can not figure it out! I know you have to learn somewhere but holy **** - just get to the point instead of having to ask them this stuff...I know I am being selfish.......to all of you that have heart problems....you have all my love -for this is a thing I never want to go through again..When they took him in for the angiogram - I saw my dad laying there...3 years ago on the 11th of this month - was the last day my dad talked to me...as they wheeled him in for an angio...:( he never woke up- came back on a ventilator and that was that........at least he came back awake -sad, but awake....You are all very strong people! Tomorrow we will know whether they can risk doing a bi-pass or putting a defibrillator(sp?) in? Lets just hope the lungs keep improving and things get better and he gets stronger..Thanks for all the PM's.....I really appreciate it! Sorry to always just vent about bad stuff..I just feel like writing it and it makes me feel better!

Well here is an update!!!! What a weekend and week from hell....but we are defiantly seeing improvement! He was doing so well by Sunday that they scheduled a triple bi-pass on Monday morning at 6 AM...We never saw or heard from ANYONE until 4:30 that afternoon..When the doctor came in he informed us that his heart had stopped beating 2 times during surgery and that he was considered stable now and in recovery....I sent my MIL to get something to eat and it wasn't minutes later they said they were rushing him into surgery -that the artery they had to remove the blood clot in had burst and he was bleeding to death...There I sat - waiting --3 hours, later he came back to tell us he was holding his own and would be of course in recovery for sometime before being moved to ICU..Between 11:30 that night and 2 am he crashed 3 more times and they called all the family in....we stood with him and held his hand as the respirator did the breathing and his blood pressure was 51 / 21 - they sedated him of course to heal.....they said if the bleeding did not stop by 5 AM he was going back into surgery and they feared he would not live...at 4:45 Am they pulled almost 90 CC of blood every 5 minutes off his heart...and by 5 AM it had slowed to 10 cc.....it was a MIRACLE.I tell ya! - slowly the rest of the day everything seemed to be going his way--it was a MIRICLE...I can't not say it enough..by 6 PM last night - the doctor had come to make his rounds and decided to slowly back off the sedation so he could wake up a little bit..Everytime we went in- his blood pressure would rise and he would move around his fingers..he said it could take several hours and with in 2 - his eyes were open and he was shaking his head when the nurses or us asked questions.....the respiratory doc came in and said they were going to test his lungs to see if they could take him off the vent! HOLY COW..they had told us earlier that it could be 2 days!- the nurses kept telling us to talk to him and he would shake yes or no...when I kidded him and said - Now- when they take this tube out - you better be nice to these nurses..they are kinda cute ya know......and he smiled a BIG smile right around the tube! So by 8 PM they took the tube out and when we asked him if he remembered anything he said -NO..we were so relieved...he said he remembered me saying one time that Lo -his wife- had gone to the hotel to rest...but thats it.He didn't pull or fight the tubes when he was coming out..he was so peaceful...and tonight I am happy to say that he sat on the edge of the bed 2x's already! Can you imagine going from life to death and back again in a mere 24-28 hours!........I will never put down Creighton Medical Center again!!!! Thanks for letting me tell you the story!!
