Royal Scepters and Orbs

Post by RedGlitter »

While looking for photos of the crown jewels tonight, (something that fascinates me) I wondered what is the purpose of the scepter and the orb? Surely that orb must signify something or else it's a darned valuable paperweight!

The sceptre derives from symbols of authority carried by leaders so they could be identified in a crowd, probably originally just a big staff with something on top of it. Just as they used to use flags to show where they were on a battlefield. Just think back to days with no radio or TV what would you use to make sure a leader stood out how would you identify a leader small town style.

Early societies would have also used something like that to control meeting-the one holding it had the right to speak and not be interrupted.

The orb signifies dominance over the world dates back to late roman times

Wee bit off topic but just wondered, do you think the American people would like to have had a royal family Red?

Hmm. I think a good portion of us might, Buttercup. We were so infatuated with Diana (and Fergie to a lesser degree)...we watched Diana's wedding like we watched the space shuttle launch, glued to the tv in awe. And when she died, we were so heavyhearted. I'm sure not as much as UK people were but we felt it too. As a general consensus we loved Diana. I thought the Queen Mum was cool as well. We would (I think) like the pageantry and romance of having a royal family but I doubt we would want to pay to keep them in that lifestyle. They'd have to come with their own castle. ;) In a way I think we would resent them as much as love them, if that makes any kind of sense.
