Bit of technical help please

Post by gmc »

I use an external hard drive rather than the computer hard drive for all my business files. Couoke of times recently the computer has lost sight of the hard drive (for want of a better word) when I click on it the drive churns like it's trying to start. If I disconnect and re-start the computer it works again. I seem to have a corrupt file in one of my folders. I get a message the file or directory is currupted or unreadable. When i open a pdf file I get file corrupted run chkdsk. Have done so seems OK although i don't know how to run it on the external hard drive.

All the other files seem OK and My back ups are OK it is just this one folder. I Can't delete and replace from the back up it as i get file corrupt cannot be accessed. It seems to be something in this folder that i was working with. I use open office so I was cutting and pasting off a windows application that produced word documents in to OO so I maybe imported something.

However the PDF files I can't access used to be accessible and were created when i scanned documents in.

Everything is backed up so it's irritating rather than a disaster but several questions

The drive itself Could it be on it's way out? It's stalled a couple of times before . It's an 80gb drive about half full. about four years old

Would reformatting the drive remove the corrupted file?

How do I run chkdsk on an external hard drive.

Should I just cut my losses, stop wasting time use one of my back up drives and get another back up.

Given the cost of hard drives it's not worth trying to get someone to fix it-probably cost more than a new one.

Any comments much appreciated.

Hope all is well with you. How are things in Scotland? My musician friends had gone again to the UK and Scotland this summer and of course loved it. They had a blast with all of the school kids and also the adults at the local clubs where they performed.

Would reformatting the drive remove the corrupted file? Yes but not necessary just delete the corrupt file or files.

How do I run chkdsk on an external hard drive. same as you do your internal hard drive just name the drive and path. start/cmd a dos window opens chkdsk e: /f

Should I just cut my losses, stop wasting time use one of my back up drives and get another back up. might be simpler to get a new internal hard drive or reformat it and copy your backup on the the new drive.

Given the cost of hard drives it's not worth trying to get someone to fix it-probably cost more than a new one. Simpler solution delete the files or files from your internal hard drive, you have it backed up on the external drive correct??

TIME TO BY A NEW INTERNAL HARD DRIVE OR REFORMAT IT.

Any comments much appreciated.

No I don't use the internal drive for business files at all. Confidential info so if I need to get the main computer fixed there is nothing confidential on my internal drive. I use an external hard drive that I back up daily with a second hard drive and weekly with a third.

I can't delete the corrupted files or i would just have done it-I just get file corrupted can't be accessed.

I would just format and replace the files but seems a bit pointless if the drive is failing.

What kind of music and where in scotland. It's belting with rain here. Scotland used to be covered in temperate rain forest, now we just have the rain without the forest.

My error though it was on your internal drive. You make a point if you have a back up too the back up is the file also corrupt on the back up to the back up?? If not problem solved scarp the old drive and get a new to add to the set of backups.

You can have someone delete the corrupt file that knows how to get into "access denied" files. I have tried many, many time to sneak in and delete them sometime it work sometimes it doesn't. :-5.

Google the exact error you would be surprised at the knowledge on the internet in dealing with errors. GOOD LUCK..!!

I have neighbors, who have recently moved...bummer, and they have a local band who has become infatuated with the UK and Scotland. Here's their site....I think they're a great band and well-loved by all here: Their band name is "Big Baby Ernie" They've visited Scotland and the UK for 3 years now. They play funk and jazz and are really nice and cool guys:-4

No they're not corrupted. When I realised I had a problem I thought it was the drive failing I so backed everything up. Luckily though the corrupted files couldn't be accessed. I also have a fourth one off site just in case I get burgled and my fireproof safe nicked. I have a paperless office, the drives contain the equivalent of four full size filing cabnets.

For seventy quid I'd get a replacement ASAP and retire the unit, there's just no benefit to be had in trying to stretch its life any further. You sound like you've got your backups under control. You carry one copy to your off-site vault before bringing in the previous off-site copy, so there's never a time when they're all physically together?

There are other files I can't access but ones that I had opened while working-if that makes sense. Wonder if I've imported anything but don't see how and I have anti virus and the like anyway. back ups seem to be OK so I think I'll just cut my losses and replace it. It's costing me more in time than it's worth. Just glad I was conscientious about backing up. Can get get a maxtor drive with 500gb for £55 now or a terrabyte forn just under £00. I suppose four years of daily use isn't bad value for money.

You just get used to it. Doesn't rain all the time, it's only when you go abroad you realise how different it is. as in how green it all is-we take it for granted. We get tourists from the Mediterranean who find it really exotic-that and the mountains. When I was on malta one of the lovals was asking me if it was true everything was green in scotland-he couldn't imagine what it was like despite having seen photos.

Do they come for the jazz festivals? We get musicians from all over the place especially during the edinburgh festival or celtic connections-there's acouple of jazz festivals as well. Some of the bands play on the streets to publicise their show you get african bands playing next to pan-pipe playing bands from the andes-actually they were dressed as north american indians, for some obscure reason, last time I saw one-that they came from peru was a bit of a give-away. It's surprisingly international in scope.

Can't say I'm a great jazz fan.

Right clicked on the drive, then properties realised in tools i could error check it. Seems to have done the trick. Also repaired my adobe reader and open office installation as well. Still not sure if I have a fault developing in my drive or not. still have a couple of corrupted files.
