Rosamond refuses to use the train from Bristol to Edinburgh and back each term now that the fare structure's changed. No matter how far she books ahead, even with a railcard, the lowest a single gets is £78. Some of the time she flies for half that, some of the time she car-shares with another student doing the same journey and gets a one-trip insurance cover note to share the driving.

Hi Sob:-6

What do you think of this price for rails....

It's about 900 miles from an hour south of Washington, DC to Orlando, Florida. The cost of the railroad journey there and back during low seasion is near $500/almost 900 pounds UK. Plus it takes me 4 hours to drive to Washington and 2 hrs. to drive from Orlando to the west coast.

What do you think of that price?

****sorry, forgot to add that this includes my car also.

:wah::wah: The price of our trains is almost the same as a plane, but I still have to drive 12 hrs. longer on my journey with the train (both ways). But, in long run, I have my car for the time that I'm there. If I rented a car it would cost about 250 pounds a week.

Be aware - British Rail cheat!

I booked a ticket from Stevenage (forty mile north of London) to Newcastle (two hundred mile north of London) and was charged £210

My co-worker booked a ticket from London to Newcastle on the same train - £180

I telephoned BR to confirm what and why - it turned out that they had booked me from Stevenage to Newcastle via London, standard practice as *everyone* would want to travel that way

We checked the price anyhow, it was cheaper by £20.:-5

The time we could have saved:-5

I recently researched traveling from Kent to Scotland by rail air and coach.

The coach was the cheapest, unbelievably so, with offers that defied reason if booked at the right time and if you were willing to travel at the right time.......but they would have to pay me to travel that way after previous experience.

Some rail prices were unbelievably high, with three people it could top £1000.....I still cannot believe that to be true.

All three travelled by air in the end for about £270 return plus parking.
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

They're advertising? I remember them when they were small and efficient. I've had an account there since the 90s, they're effective.

I travel quite alot up and down to London, Sussex and race meetings all over.

I hate trains. Not just the prices, the buffet car is always closed. Virgin traions are the worst. They are more often late.

Although the journey takes far longer, you can't get a coffee, you have to change at Victoria Station, but i much prefer coach now.

National Express. I can not fault them. There's a heck of a difference in price as well if you book in advance.

The last train i went on, it was horrendous.

Differnce in City's.

Victoria Station Announcements DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED BAGGAGE. I REPEAT; ANY UNATTENDED PACKAGES WILL BE REMOVED AND BLOWN UP.

Bristol Announcement: "oy, don't feed the pigeons".

I travel from Hove, Sussex to London Victoria several times a year on a Saturday and have been lucky with family tickets...my grandson travels for a pound. Not sure how much it'll be when he's 12 +. last time we went we had to stand for part of the journey until they added 8 extra carriages at Haywards Heath. I would n't drive to London though !

Close call that one. The Withdean Stadium, i hate it. Better than sharing with Gillingham though.

I remember the good old days of the "North Stand" at "The Goldstone Ground".

May i be so pertinent as to ask what area of Hove are you in?

I was in Piccadilly station in Manchester recently. What a fab railway station?
