The only[1] mice which need a pad of their own are mice with balls. It must be ten years since I let one of those near my computer.

[1] Actually, thinking about it, there was another sort which needed a special reflective pad with a cross-hatch grid to let the driver know where it was being pushed. Without the pad it did nothing. A sort of dead end in mouse technology, that, but at the time it was a pretty effective piece of kit. I'm sure the one I used pre-dated Microsoft Windows, I bought it to run Coral's Ventura which was a mid-price multipage layout design DOS package with its own graphics interface.

I have a small collection of mousepads that I choose from according to mood. Right now I am using a cute little round one that is red, black, gray and white and features cartoon drawings of a bird, dog, cat and bunny and it says "Best Friends Animal Sanctuary-No More Homeless Pets." It is a souvenir from my trip to Best Friends in Utah.
