Post by Chezzie »

Do people this day and age still get stung by cyber predators?

A Cyber predator uses the Internet to hunt for victims to take advantage of in ANYway, including sexually, emotionally, psychologically or financially.

Virtual Offenders are more likely to suffer from an addictive disorder motivated by an attempt to use sexual fantasies as a way to escape problems in their lives, acknowledging the exploitative features and harm or pain they inflict.

The Internet allows predators to deceive others and pretend they are something they're not. Since image is everything on the Internet, people on forums and in chat rooms can live in a fantasy world, where the line between fantasy and reality is often blurred.

"It's important that people understand that cyberstalking is more prevalent than they can imagine. The lack of all communications cues which normally might tip off someone as to a person's intent are absent, and aid the stalker in furthering his desires. People need to be aware of the information that can be obtained about THEM online, often for free, and need to understand that they can avoid becoming a victim in many instances, and what to do should it happen despite their efforts.

A con artist is a predator who uses stealth to deceive people into giving him their money and/or their property.

Never give any financial information to anyone over the phone or on the Internet.

The internet can be a wonderful tool for research and connecting with friends, but it can also be a very dangerous place. You alone can protect your kids. Make sure they know the rules for safe surfing. Make sure they don't add people they don't know to MSN, Y, AIM and ICQ. If they have a blog, ask for the URL so you can read it and talk to them about posting only non-indentifying information. Most importantly keep the lines of communication open, encourage them to talk about what they see online.

If a poster becomes harassing, obscene or personal, do not retaliate. Instead, cut and paste the offensive post(s) into an e-mail or pm and quickly report it to the moderator or forum administrator.

Anyone who has been a victim and feels able to talk about it here, may help another member avoid being sucked in.

No, thank goodness. I try to be careful....well, sometimes....:p:D

I do trust many members in FG that I've known for quite awhile, but I think that I can usually pick out or at least be aware of a scamer.

Good thread, Chezzie. It is always good to review these safety protections.

I know on one of the poetry forums I go to, there was one person who stalked me, so I had to go into invisible mode there all the time and put them on an ignore list. That was very creepy, I didn't want anything to do with that person, and it still makes me nervous to uncloak on that site.

Excellent Thread Chez and hopefully a warning for some who read it.These people you describe should not be allowed to roam Forums or any site come to that. Children also need protecting from these slime balls as well as the most vulnerable women out there. If your Thread here helps just one person it would have served its purpose.

This is a great thread. Everyone should always use caution and only trust someone after you've known them for a long time. If you ever get a red flag or a "gut feeling" that someone is not who they say they are or seems unusual, be very cautious. I've known people for several months, even years, who have turned out to be crazy as a loon.
I probably posted that in an ambien trance-soryy

Excellent thread, Chezzie. Yes, I gave it five stars. :D

Cyber predators are everywhere and they are on this forum, just like any other forum. If a member seems too good to be true, then they likely are... don't get hooked in by them. These people tell you precisely what they think you want to hear, in order to lure vulnerable victims in. Be cautious of individuals that come on too strongly... send you multiple pm's and such when you've just joined and have had relatively little interaction with on the open forum, that sort of thing. Just be careful overall and please don't willingly divulge personal information to someone you hardly know or who send off red flags from the start.

excellent thread!

To many people young and old are caught in their lies and maliscious behaviour. There many are even ready to jump in and meet them in person.........that to me, is ridiculous, you have no idea what these people are like............anyone can say anything nice to lure you into their traps.

Mostly young girls get into these fantasies and don't come out alive.

They know what you want to hear, and they trap you.

some forums start at the age of 14 as well and go up to any age groups, these forums should be restricted to teens only.

even here on FG, do we trust everyone..........no we don't.

Absolutely not.

I remember making this post on another thread posted by jonesjones... making a reference to Ted Bundy who was a very dangerous predator who came across as a great guy, but was anything but in actuality.

What about the parents of children here do you put parental controls on their pc? I have net nanny, I also regularly go through the IE temporary files to make sure its still working and blocking inappropriate sites ect. Mine are 10 yrs and 9 yrs and I feel it necessary to check up, its with their consent, I'm not sneaky about it and I explain to them why. Im lucky that they hardly use the pc but next year the eldest will be in high school and they have online schooling from a source calle moodle, I have to be sure she is safe and educated against these predators.

Its a horrid feeling to found out you have been duped, whether it be by a male or female, a cyber predator can be male or female but the stats show its mainly male.

Most cyber predators look for prey who are down on their luck, having domestic problems, they then approach with kind words and all to soon these cyber criminals become their soulmates and later manipulate and victimise them.

In a survey by Symantec, commissioned by Harris Interactive it was discovered that about half of adult Internet users (52 percent) around the world report having made friends online, leading us to believe that the old adage of "don't talk to strangers" doesn't apply when in online worlds. More surprising was that about half of users who made friends online (46 percent) said they enjoyed those relationships as much or more than friendships made offline. Other online activities ranking high around the world are dating (23 percent), using social networking sites (50 percent), and playing games (72 percent).

If your have one inkling of doubt as to the sincerity of a persons actions on this forum, please pm a moderator as they may hold information on the person and be able to advice you on how to deal with it or reassure you.

Sure it is hard to do if you don't know who they are .

But when you do know it is best to ignore them as best you can.

And with a vengance.

I do a bit of social networking on line, and my profile has been changed that many times to get the message across that I will not do cam sex, and don't have a stocking fetish. I've gone for simple, indepth, outspoken, and just plain nothing. It doesn't stop someone who has become expert in reading profiles, spotting a weak point and exploiting it. I.E. ''Recently single after a long term relationship, new and wobbly to the dating scene, please be gentle''. Their aim, to fulfil their idea of women meeting them for sex in hotels, with boots/stockings/etc. How they deal with newly single and vulnerable, ''I understand, talk to me'', this carries on for a bit. They get your confidence in them, then little slip ups like, ''So if I were to turn up right now for sex, would you wear your boots for me?'' And so on.

I've talked to a female friend who was actually a couple looking for a 3rd person. She would do the girly thing of saying, ''Men eh wouldn't find the g-spot if they had a map lol'', and cos you know them pretty well by then you say, ''Oh please the stories I could tell you!'' So they ask. You say oh, no. Little things happen, then she starts to mention her man has seen my profile too and thinks I'm lovely, and if only she would do a 3some with him. I tell her he's a dirty perve, she says shame, cos she would if it was with me. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.

Fortunately that was in the early days when I was naive, I now have a radar for a scammer or fantasy driven person.

I have met people in real life, but only if local, and in public places, and with friends phoning me on my mobile throughout the date. I am now dating someone on a regular basis who I met on a forum who is quite human, decent and no weird demands of me.

Great thread Chez:D I used to go in a chat room on another site a lot, if any men started showing an interest or flirting a bit i always mentioned as soon as possible i was happily married and content. (Dont get me wrong nowt wrong with a bit of flirting just in fun.) But more often than not they suddenly lost interest in being friends havin a laugh etc:rolleyes:mind it did help me to make a couple of friends as well, as i could tell if they still wanted to talk that they were'nt after "cyber fun":wah: also met their other halves and made friends with them too:D I have come across some nasty people on the internet, but also some wonderful people too, just like in RL i suppose, but i know what you are saying that its harder to recognise them as quickly on the net:thinking:

I am so grateful i dont have young children now though, just another danger to worry about:(

I don't suppose I've ever been interesting enough to stalk, hound, harrass or otherwise annoy..

Oh, don't get me wrong... Nomad made a half hearted attempt once because he knew I was feeling left out:rolleyes:...

I don't email folks outside the forum, with the exception of a chosen few. I've been known to turn off PM when I think someone may like to say something to me that they won't regret later..:D.. bottom line, I just don't care, so say it to someone who might..

There are folks that have been here forever that I would not trust as far as I could throw them... but there are others ...they would only have to hint at need.

And so far, I am fine with my judgement of their worth...

El Whoppo is offering 2 for 1 hits. Thats fairly predatory but its also an indispensible and necessary service.

Prior to the advent of the internet one had to summon "cleaners" from Soldier of Fortune or from a friend of a friend of a friend and you never knew what you were getting.

We all know El Whops and Im sure his work is up to snuff.

I find myself hesitant with newbies here on the Forum. I do welcome them but I have to read more posts by them before I respond. I notice that many come to be welcomed, then we never hear from them again. Potential predators..or just shy.............dunno.

Remember, most predators know exactly what to post to make you feel comfortable, to make you trust them, to flatter you. That's their terrible skill.

On the internet super-highway, as I always say, proceed with caution.

This is indeed an important thread. Thanks. :)
