How Loyal are You to Your Political Party?

My uncle used to say that if his party put a stump up there to run for president, he would vote for it! :rolleyes:

To me that seems like a strange way to think about it!

I always like to vote for the person, not the party!

Sadly the party mentality is still very prevalent and still very here to stay for quite some time I think...

well i'm not registered as any particular party. I've voted in every presidential election since i was old enough to register to vote at 18, and i have voted both democratic and republican!

I'm having a hard time here in Britain,

I resigned from my Labour party membership after the Blair administration and decided not to immediately take sides with any other party. Then along came Gordon Brown who replaced Blair and although from the same government as Blair, i have been very impressed with him over the past faw months.

My pen has been twitching over that Labour Party registration form once again of late but there are things that i don't agree with.

It seems to be the case that they can't please all of the people at all of the time.

I have just agreed to spend some months with a new Conservative Junior M.P. as he is oppossing 12,000 new houses about to be built on greenbelt near my home which will wreck our wildlife structure.

I know he's doing it for votes and i'm doing it for the animals.

The guy he is trying to oust out of the constituancy has been in for 19 years and he is certainly out of touch in the real world.

So, although, i don't want to, i feel that i have to help this Tory Junior M.P. just in the hope of seeing change finally for the better.

I'm registered as a Republican, which is how I usually vote. I do, however, watch each canidate thru the campaignes and vote as to who I think is closest to my own convictions and beliefs. I do vote for one local democrat every time he comes up for re-election....he's a democrat, but he's also our pharmacist and we know him quite well and trust him completely.

i never understood my uncles reasoning, i don't get this blind faith to the party!

i want to think and decide for myself!

My grandfather was a republican and my grandmother was a democrat, he voted, she didn't. every year he would go vote, the kids would ask him if he voted republican, he'd say yes and granny would get mad! :wah: i think if she was that concerned about it, she should have gone and voted too! :wah:

Seems to me like registering on behalf of a party does one thing and that's to let them know that the people are happy with the current policies put forth by them so I in all honesty would remain Independent or just quite simply not register at all...

But then again I suppose people think I'm cynical...

...I look at it as being a realist to be quite honest...

Registering doesn't say squat to the politicians...votes do. By not registering you're not voting, so that leaves you with no voice at all. Just because you register as one party, you can vote any way you want to at the polls.

It equals money paid into the party over here - it's how the party survives when it cannot get dodgy money from passing Russian Oligarchs.

We don't have to register a party afilliation when we register to vote. If I did, I'd be really tempted to register for the opposite side so I could vote in their primary. :sneaky:

Oh no, you can register independent. If you do that can you vote in both primaries or only one. I don't know how they work it with independents.

think every state is different when i first registered to vote in IN. you had to declare. that was in the 70's don't know if that has changed or not??

i know some people around here who aren't happy with the candidate there party is running this year, instead of switching to the other side, they are choosing to not vote at all!

I dunno. Never really asked the question myself. A few places scattered all over the city allow us to vote early no matter what district, precinct, or whatever. They're all closed now. Regular polls open on Tuesday.

So if every candidate espouses policies you cannot support then what do you do?

Not voting is not necessarily a sign of apathy - you can be as committed to your principles as anyone but if the parties are not in tune with the people then you have to make your feeling known in other ways than voting to empower a party whose policies you find offensive because that they are the "least bad"
