same here, just way way to early for this, December is good but not now!
way to much commercialized, the day after halloween, all stores are decked up and ready...will be ever get a break?
..and doing it early gets folks in the mood to shop, but then again when its really at a hype....they spend even more. - hence their so called budget just went on their credit cards that they cannot afford to pay in January, tsk tsk!
If I don't have cash...will not buy.
its all planned purposely this way for us, and, it works..because I have shopped early to avoid crowds..then see brand new things just brought out in Dec or mid........never again.
what are your reasons for not celebrating?

There's not many jobs where it's easy to carry on working effectively through the Christmas holiday. If you're into family reunions it's the one time of year when you needn't feel pushy to suggest it. Refusing to join in the orgy of spending is trivial, nobody would fault a person for that.

They start xmas way too early here. It is getting so they are starting before Halloween....I am sick of xmas by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. And I think xmas has lost the family/friend feel that it use to have. It is so about gifts and decorations. Gifts and decorations use to be the backdrop of gatherings of family and friends....now it seems to be the centerpiece. It has lost its warmth to some degree.

I don't like how commercialised Christmas has come, well not just Christmas, lets be honest every holiday is over marketed.
So what would it take, I wonder, to make us reassess our attitude to Christmas? A complete overturn of our must-have-it-now culture? The alarming levels of personal debt in this country?
Close your eyes, think hard and tell me, what did you get for Christmas last year? Come on, it was only eleven short months ago so it shouldn’t be too difficult to recall. Was it 2007’s “must-have iPod/DVD/Xbox/mobile phone that you can now buy for half the price because it’s been superceded ten times over? Or was it the more traditional collection of fragrant cosmetics you never used, or books you never read, or comedy socks you never wore?
I wish it wasn't like this but how do you get everyone back to giving a small meaningful gift.
No your not wrong to celebrate Christmas Tan:D

Am I wrong to not celebrate Christmas?
I do not celebrate Christmas myself. To me it appears to be a major commercial exercise more than anything else. Of course, there is a religious aspect too (though you wouldn't think so when you go shopping at Christmas). Though, there is some controversy regarding the actual date Jesus was born and the origins of Christmas itself which appears to have pagan links. Very confusing.
The real issue, to me, is how all this affects children. Schools with Christian affiliation will be taught about the nativity. And it is impossible to hide them from the glitter and sparkle of Christmas decorations and lights and so on. It is an exciting time for them and a burden for those who don't want to disappoint their children but can't afford to buy so many presents.
It is clear to me that the shops are not giving anything away, although they are quick to remind you that Christmas is a time for giving. This is the aspect of Christmas that reviles me the most, the commercial aspect.
On the other hand, people tend to be generally nicer to each other over the Christmas period.
I am not a Pagan and I am not a Christian. In fact, I'm not sure exactly what my 'religion' would be. But my beliefs do not fall entirely in either category. Nonetheless, because of the widescale celebrations of Christmas, I respect that our children are affected by it all. I know that I do not want my child to feel left out or undervalued or treated differently in a derogative way to their peers. So, in this respect, I celebrate Christmas. Or, rather, I celebrate the children. Their excitement, their expectations, the wonder in their eyes at all the glitter and sparkle. I may be a cynic, but I will encourage and share the children's joy before they lose their innocence and I can be nostalgic in remembering how it was for me.
I do not celebrate Christmas, but it sure as hell cannot be ignored.

I'd love to hear those reasons.
Not so long ago, I found myself getting right grumpy around Christmas time. It was associated with all the hype and 'goodwill to all men', etc. The goodwill always seemed to stop the day after New Year's Day. Hmmmph. So, I will always associate Christmas with the worst of mankind's hypocrisy.
After I realised how it affected me, I decided to raise myself above it for my own sake. I don't like being grumpy. I will treat Christmas like any other day off from work. I won't set the alarm, I will get up when I'm ready, have breakfast, take a walk, and just relax. Iwill be cordial to anyone who wishes me a happy Christmas. I will not blow their heads off with a Toss Christmas rant (not that I ever did:D). I will have a ready meal for dinner and toast for tea.

Christmas is a secular holiday nowadays anyway. celebrate it with lightness and fun like Mardi Gras.
Jesus wasn't even born in December, as I recall. The Catholic Church moved holidays around to coincide with pagan holidays to suck more people into the church.
If you believe in Jesus Christ you should celebrate his birth, death, and resurrection every minute. Let the Christmas holiday be one to celebrate family, like it has become. :-6

With the family and friends we have, the goodwill doesn't end after Christmas, we continue all year to love and take of each other.
Christmas to me, is a time to get together with all of our family's, as all of us are busy during the year to have everyone available, with work schedules, vacations etc. prevail.
New Years Eve we stay in.....restaurants over-price their regular menus to an extreme, and there are just way to numerous drunk drivers on the roads. We will have friends over or rent movies.
New Years day to rest up before going back to work.
its never been about the giving of gifts.

See how confused everyone is as to the origin of Christmas. It's the birth of Jesus, it's St. Nicholas distributing gifts to the children of the poor, it's an ancient pagan festival. I think it's all a myth and so Christmas can be whatever you want it to be.
Now, a lot of people associate it with an annual family gathering which is fine if you get on ok with your family. Fortunately I do. Unfortunately, my family, those that are still living and other than my daughter, are far away so I shan't be seeing them this Christmas either as I don't have the money. We are always in touch though and it doesn't matter as we are a close family however far apart we are.

I have found my self wanting to skip christmas more and more as I get older, however I am surrounded by a very very small family and because my daughters are used to it being "family" time, I continue the tradition on for the sake of my children and grandchild. We try to keep the cost low but the family time high.
Tan nothing wrong about not wanting christmas.... it can be incredibly taxing, all the build up towards one day, the pressure of shopping day count downs:-5 and yeah I feel let down quite often on the 25th because it ends just like that.

You can celebrate, or not celebrate that is your decision. You shouldn't feel bad about making that decision.

Most of these posts make my heart hurt a little. Christmas is my favorite holiday! Its about the birth of Jesus, going shopping for people you love and picking just the right gift to show how much you care about them, its about families getting together and enjoying a wonderful meal.
I wish I could invite all of you to my house and start new memories for you, wonderful ones with eggnog, brisket, laughter, love, fellowship, dancing, games and opening up a present someone you love picked out especially for you...
I start decorating right after Thanksgiving and my house looks like it literally puked Christmas. I will upload pics when I get home.
I have a suggestion for those of you have lost the spirit (I do this every year), go to your local women/children's shelter and adopt a family for CHristmas. You can make presents if you have to, it makes me feel sooooo good when I get to go shopping for these people. That is the highlight of my holiday.

Niet. No children, no story. Sorry.

Am I wrong to not celebrate Christmas?
OpenMind;1050538 wrote: See how confused everyone is as to the origin of Christmas.
You sound a little like myself, OM. Except for my hubby, my family lives far away. I also don't have the money this year. I just plan on spending a relaxing Christmas day with my hubby.
Celebrating Christmas to me is going to a Christmas service and having a nice dinner with family. I like to give gifts, but I won't be able to this year, unless I become really creative. :wah: I don't expect gifts as I am no longer a child.
As a child, the days before Christmas were full of anticipation and wonder. The wonder is sometimes there, but the anticipation is not.

Interesting what you say there as we made an agreement between us to just buy pressies for the children for Christmas. For us, Christmas is mainly for the children.

What a response!
Thanks for all the input guys/gals.
It's sometimes difficult to express something that is not the norm in society.
PS. Odie and I are going over to The New DGs this Xmas (Thanks DG..lol. It sounds wonderful!)

well as a person of the Christian faith i tend to think of Christmas from the Biblical standpoint, but having a 2 year old i try to give him the whole Santa experience too!
but i agree with a lot of you that Christmas has become way to commercial!

You are not alone.
Problem is, almost everybody whinges about Christmas being too commercial and too crass, yet most dutifully march to the malls and spend far too much money on schlock. It's a thoroughly Pavlovian response.
Here's a site where you can download "Boycott Christmas" stickers, posters, and iron-on transfers:

After my poppy comes off my coat , my "Boycott Christmas" button goes on in it's place.
Time to take a stand!

I don't personally celebrate Christmas. At least, not in the way I was originally taught about Christmas by the church and the schools I attended.
I have come to believe it is an occasion to celebrate families, children and friendship more than anything else. A time to celebrate the human race. But this has come from watching how people celebrate Christmas in general. An observation of peoples who have rejected religious abjective and embraced peace and humanity for all.
We should make the most of it while we can. Christmas will not always be with us. It's meaning is fading.
This year will mark the first year where the true meaning of Christmas will be tested and whether people will continue to celebrate it or whether it will just become a long end of year occasion.

It's totally your decision Tan...you have the right to celebrate what you do or do not want to.

It's your choice do as you will.
It has no meaning to me as a religious festival not being religious. I like it as a family time to see family members I only see once a year. Living in northern europe you get the point of it's origins-you can sense winter ending and the days starting to get long again. I always think it's in our psyche-you survived the dark days of winter let's party. The Christians couldn't stop people celebrating so basically hijacked it-they couldn't stop new year festivities either-at least not in scotland and ireland, or the festivities in easter.
If you don't celebrate Christmas don't spoil it for others. I find people who complain about it being over commercialised irritating. We know it's commercialised do you really think you are the only ones that noticed? it's part of the fun, if it annoys you don't go shopping.
I also find christians who complain about their saviours birth celebration being hijacked irritating as well. It's a pagan festival you pinched in the first place-get a life. The puritans banned christmas but their ilk are still with us.
