I almost forgot to tell you guys!

Post by valerie »

I went to the neighbor's the other day and he brought

out his 7 foot boa "Liberty" and asked me if I wanted to

hold her... I don't know why but I did... the air temp

was coolish so when I took her, she rested the bulk of her

weight in my arms, but the front 3 feet or so she went up

my arm and draped herself along my shoulders behind my

neck! I admit to just a TEENSE bit of apprehension but if

any snake can be said to be "sweet", then she certainly

was.

Very exciting, how many times in your life do you get to

do something like that?

Very Cool and way to go, they are not slimey and creepy and have killer written all over them. Only way to over come a fear, face it, things aren't always as bad as we think. That is how I learned about snakes too,OMG my sis in law would have gone into cardiac arrest just at the suggestion of being in the same city as a snake.

Good on ya girl.

Just don't upset them while you're holding them, a 7 foot bull snake about crushed me to death once.

When I was growing up in Montana, we had a real rattlesnake problem. They were everywhere, I even saw one on my doorstep once when I went to get the morning paper.

My next door neighbor was a "Rattlesnake Mercenary" whose job it was to capture the critters for zoos and research. What a cool job title, eh?

"Say, what do you do for a living?"

"I'm a Rattlesnake Mercenary." :D

He used a "grabber" which was a long stick with a claw attached to catch them, and I'm telling you he had the fastest reflexes I've ever seen in a human. He once caught a big rattler in midair right in front of his face!

Hey Far - when they cut that particular snake open there was indeed a man in there................

Snakes are amazing! I'm glad you took the once in a lifetime opportunity to hold something in your arms that could probably grow really big and kill you. Of course, I think you're facing the same risk when you hold a child. And children are usually slimier...

Are constrictor states native to North America or do we only have the poisonous ones?

I don't know of any constrictors native to the States. Anybody?

I always had curiosity about them... I remember in grade school

sometimes the little boys would find a garter snake on the school

grounds and chase screaming little girls with it... always took the wind

out of their sails when I would say "Oh let me see" and they'd turn away.

I was no fun.

'Course, didn't take too many grades later before the boys found out

Val was LOTS of fun!!!

I have to hand it to you Val, I'm a big strapping guy & I would not want to hold that snake, in fact any snake!! I HATE SNAKES!!! I saw my fair share of those nasty critters when I was in Florida earlier this year, I almost stepped on one wearing open sandles. UGH!

What kind of Boa was it?? Some are much nicer than others and they are very nice between feedings. I imagine a 7 footer is on rabbits by now.

Yes, she is on rabbits... for some reason they found she didn't like chickens!

I don't know what kind she is though. And she hasn't had any eggs yet.

Very pretty skin. Not the albino type, I don't think I would have picked her

up because those just kinda get to me for some reason!

Never seen a rubber boa before, but I saw a hand-carved wood one at the Cracker Barrel for $3.55 :)
