what's your favourite chat account?
There are quite a few that bring all of the chat suppliers into a single package and give them all the same feel and look. I use one of those - Pidgin. The best known for use with Microsoft Windows operating systems is Trillian, I've used that and got on well with it. I'd not like to use AOL Messenger and Yahoo Messenger and MSN and ICQ and all the other programs side by side, I'd much rather have one program with all my accounts inside it.

Neither Pidgin nor Trillian have any advertising aspects at all. I suspect the Google chat does.
The thing is that different friends have different chat suppliers and if you want to talk to all of them you need a general purpose chat engine. I've never quite seen why that's not a conclusive argument.

A quick look at Trillian (software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)) shows the sort of options available.
