Mailing an Oar overseas

I know this sounds wacky, but I'd like to mail a special , decorative oar to my cousin Liz in Killarney, Ireland, and none of our services want to mail it for me at a reasonable price.

My Father's brother Jim and his family lived on "Seville Place" in Dublin.

I had my friend paint 2 oars, one for Liz and one for me, to hang above our doorway in remembrance of our childhood homes. I called my home "Seville Place" and she called her home "Pamrapo."

They are lovely oars painted with such love from my friend. The oar is very light, mint green because that was our color, about 64 inches in length, 6 inches in width, and has the Claddagh design on it. I'll try to post a pic.

Our Post Office service says that the oar is about 6 inches too long and won't mail it. Our UPS service says that it would cost hundreds of dollars to mail........WTF is that all about

No one could explain this to me.

Anyone know a service that would mail it for me?

Sorry, we're having a bit of a brown out right now, and pics might be dim.

Try FedEx freight, UPS GLOBAL, OR DHL. If they can ship a CAR overseas they should be able to ship 2 Oar's. They are odd sized and may cost you lots to mail sad but true. Unless they can fit it in a box it becomes a problem package and the $$$$ is over the top. :-5 People travel with Surf Boards all the time send it Cargo.

Thank you for responding Carla. FedEx won't deliver. I will try global and dhl.....I just can't believe that my post office won't mail it because it's 6 inches too long. It sounds so stupid to me. I can box it somehow by putting 2 post office boxes together, but it's still too long.

When I was in Florida I bought tshirts to send onto some fg members and didn't realize that the post office would be closed the day before I left for home. Sooooo, I went to UPS and tried to mail them. Wooooooo, they told me that 4 little, light packages would cost hundreds of dollars to mail. So, I shleped them home on the plane

and mailed them from Noo Joisey.

Worse case senario is that I'll carry it on the plane, if I can:-5, when I go to Ireland during the summer of 2010. Oy vey...

I wish you luck I have tried to send stuff to Dublin for the last 3 years and every time the package either gets lost (?) or months later gets returned to me.

This even happened when I tried to send via my sons work and they have a mail room so no chance that theres no-one home and its returned to sender. Ive always sent it via my post office in an official box with the correct postage ect ect. Still no joy.

I now wait until someone is going over and give them gifts to take or I get stuff via mail order companies in Ireland somehow that does get delivered..

The Irish postal service seems to be a law unto itself.

Thank you for the info Victoria. I'm really upset with our postal system. I'm going to look into the sites that Carla has given me. If they're not fesible, then I'm going to wait until next summer to just bring it myself. It's an oar for Heaven's sake...can't believe it can't be mailed.

Thanks Along. I would love to just send it as it's taken me at least 3 years to finally have the oar made and now I can't send it throught our mail carriers....very disheartening indeed

The 1st 2 sites were unreasonable, but the 3rd one International Shipping sounds great....I hope. I have to call during work hours and will do so next week.

Thanks so much. I'll let you know if it works...fingers crossed. Even thought I can bring it over during the summer of 2010, I'd hate to have to shelep it around until I see Liz.

Ducky, I'm not sure...you'd have to look into that.

I've sent many packages to Ireland through my hometown post office. I think that's the way to go....3 lbs is not heavy...

My first thought KE was to cut it in half, but you said that it's soft wood & would be destroyed when trying to put it back together. So, here's another thought. Why not just cut off the last 6" of the tip of the pole? It most likely would not even be noticed, expecially when/if hung on a wall!

Ahhhhh, thanks Cars, but look at the pics of the oars in post #1. If I cut off any part, it would be ruined. It's a decorative oar that will be hung above the entrance door. The tip of the oar has a delicate heart shape that enhances the oar:-4

OK I have a QUESTION kind of related. Christmas cards. I know to Italy i will mail no later then the First of Dec. What would be any one's advice on the UK?? The mail system in Italy. Well let;s say SLOW.

Well, back to the drawing boards, I didn't notice the heart shape ends!!! (It seemed that was too easy a fix) Hope CARLA's link works out for you on Monday!!!
