A newly remembered memory just found its way to the forefront of my mind.
When I was little, I remember my grandmother used to put down newspapers all over the kitchen floor.
I don't recall why.
Did anyone in your family do this? IF so, why?

Geeze, If I had not mentioned to another friend of mine, I'd be real concerned with the comments thus far.
My friend remembers her grandmother doing this too, but doesn't know why. she speculates it might have been to keep the floors clean for Sunday company........
I'm thinking it might be a ethic thing they did. My grandmother was from Germany and hers was from Romainia. Were your grandparents US born?

i had an great aunt who used to put newspapers on the bedroom floor at night before she went to bed, so if anyone broke into the house, she would hear them walking on the paper! but i don't know of anyone putting them on the kitchen floor.

My mother had a 'best dining table'. We always ate together when dad came in from work. I know this table was my grandmothers and i have it now as well.
The length's mum would go to to keep this table from damage and clean were astonishing.
She had a table cloth for every day of the week including two 'best' tableclothes. One was for our sunday's and the other a pur white linen one was for guests.
The table cloth would go on to protect the table and then to protect the tablecloth, another table cloth went on. If she wanted to keep that clean as well, another table cloth went on.
Mind you, this was the woman who brought me up to salute magpie's. :wah:

One night I saw her lights on so I stopped to ask her something. I parked in the street because she gave me hell about my car leaking oil on her clean driveway. As I walked along the side of the house to the back door, I pounded hard on the outer wall. I heard her screaming, tried to tell her who I was, but she couldn't hear me. She locked herself in the bathroom with her phone and called the cops. They came before I could leave. I had to lay on the ground, get searched, yelled at and humiliated in front of her neighbors. Moral- don't mess with nervous old ladies.:-3

I think we are related!! My mother was like that. To cut a long story short, one night she'd had a fall and broken her femur. She couldn't get to the phone. By midnight my brother and i were so worried that she hadn't answered the phone or the door all day that we decided to break in. Just like your aunt, we woke the whole neighbourhood by falling over pots and pans and everything else she'd stack against the doors brfore going to bed. :wah:
When the ambulance came for mum, my brother had to go also and be admited when he had a serious tumble falling over all this stuff. :wah:

Could it have been for insulation? Or to protect a freshly waxed floor? (NOT a wet one ~ rather, one where the wax has already been buffed out.)

i know lots of old ladies that swear by using newspaper to clean any type of glass, and it IS a fabulous cleaning rag for glass because it doesn't leave any lint, and the newsprint, which WILL get all over your hands so use gloves, puts a sheen on the glass that you won't get with anything else.
Another old lady trick/tip ~ When you mop, actually WASH your floor. Use a pretty wet mop for the first go; then rinse the mop for a pretty dry go; THEN, use an old towel/rag to actually DRY the floor. You won't believe the diff in how it looks after being dried. (i actually do another wet rinse and dry rinse before the final dry, but i'm weird, so...)
