I having hearing on the news. Your products size and weight are shrinking. But you are paying the same Price. If you do not know the old size and weight of the package, you will not notice. Companies are being very creative about it:sneaky:. I will pay more attention from now on.

Yes, I am already aware of this ploy. The news on TV has tipped us. As always, buyer beware. ;)

Yep SY, I noticed several years ago with the cans coffee we used! They used to be "1" pound (16 oz) cans about 10 years ago. Then I noticed their weight dropped to 15 oz, some brands even to 14 oz. 5 or 6 years ago they dropped to 13 oz cans. All the time the price basically ramained the same, but sometimes a little more! Now I've noticed some brands are now down to only "11" oz cans!!! Just today on the news, they showed almost all packaging is now "smaller", lighter, & way less product then what they used to be!!! But the "prices" haven't skyrocketed, so the general populace is not having to shell out a ton of more money for the same products, but many seem to overlook or are unawear of the downsized products! :guitarist

It seems they have done it with many products, here in New Zealand as well. Just this morning I noticed in the market that the spaghetti sauce that comes in a jar is smaller and that bottles of wine have been scaled down in size.

French frie's or 'chips' as us Brits call them can only be served with vinegar, salt, a pickled egg and a big pickled wally. :-4

Yep!! It's against British law not to have a pickled egg with frie's. In take-away shops they all have huge jars of them on the counter. oh yummy :-4

Everything they do is a ploy, to changing the entire store around, that way you have to start off fresh at each isle and see everything....hence, more buying.

To the music being played....and in so many stores where it is BLARING, ever notice you cannot concentrate on what you wanted to buy?

Music is not played because the store manager thinks it's just nice....... its for you to sing along with, or get annoyed with...and loose your concentration...more buying.

and those ever so good looking chocolate bars at the cashiers:-5:-5

That's really odd. The ingredients don't change from one week to the next, you decide once which brands you approve of and limit your purchases to those. I know which brands to avoid and which to consider. It's rare that a new brand appears.

When I'm shopping, the only figure I look at is the price per 100g, I don't look at the unit price at all. My experience is that it speeds shopping, not slows it down.

Some of the trendy young clothes shops do have a bit of music on but i have never heard it in supermarkets or large retail stores. It must drive you mad as i like to think while i'm shopping about what i'm buying etc.

Hope it's Chris Issac's they play. He's Canadian i think. I have his cd's and think he's brilliant. :driving::driving::driving:

Yea, I heard about it too on the radio. It's very sneaky! Especially the one about thinner cereal boxes....that way you can't tell the difference when you are looking at the box from the front view!

I keep getting a different impression each time you post - I've gone from Odie's supermarkets have no music at all to Odie's supermarkets are full of loud music. It was you that brought music into the thread to start with, after all.

May we take it that Odie's supermarkets are full of loud music which stops shoppers from concentrating sufficiently to calculating good value?

I never said we had no music in supermarkets.

where does it say that?

I said 'head-banging music' was not played in supermarkets, 'loud cheerful music' is.

- as southern yankee brought up ploys, I then brought up music being played is one ploy.

Isn't Fresh Milk to DIE for?!?!? i love it, and cannot bring myself to drink the swill the stores laughingly call Milk.

Here in the U.S., we have stickers on the shelves, to tell us the prices. In a lot of the stores, also included on the sticker is the price per ounce/pound/etc., so folks can compare.

i've been aware of the changes in our packaging for years because of my recipes ~ when the recipe calls for an 18 oz can of something, and the Only way it's sold anymore is in a 13 oz can, you start paying attention. Same with the large chocolate bars for baking ~ used to be 16 oz, and now they're about 13 oz.

Folks may not notice the lighter weights of the things they're buying, but if they're like me, and do a calculation of just what their groceries cost each month, they WILL notice that they're having to buy certain things more frequently, and that their grocery bills keep going up and up.
