HI JImbo:D how old is your litlle girlie doggie? just asking cos you may wish you had her done instead when she starts going in to season. when we first got our Sheila she went in to season straight away, and im not kidding you would think we had been slaughtering chickens all over the house:wah: we had to put decorating sheets down all over, and she was a little terror if she saw another dog:sneaky: mind when we did get her spayed, we nearly lost her cos something went wrong and she was bleeding internaly, had to rush her to the emergency vets the same night and she had to have another op which was dangerous,, she pulled through ok though, and its not normal for things to go wrong with such a straight forward op as that:thinking: hope i have'nt put you off:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

Hi everyone, it is recomended that Poppy gets done 2 months after her first season, as blood can engorge the tubes and it can lead to complications, we had to get Alfie done as I think Poppy will go into season soon and we couldn't risk her getting pregnant as I wouldn't be able to give the puppies away.

Alfie is having his operation this morning and he is going to get chipped at the same time, I have also asked them to check his bloods as he is not the greatest eater so I just want to rule any bad things out. Truth of it is I think he knows if he holds out I'll cook him a roast dinner, he loves them :)

Poppy has her first check with our vets at 4 and we will collect Alfie after, the day is going so slowwwww.

Kaz, I am glad Shelia was ok, I never 'got' the animal thing but I truly love them as if they are my babies  12 months ago if I'd of heard someone say that I'd of thought they were crazy :wah:

Jimbo,

My dog Barney had the chop a few weeks ago. We felt awful doing it but unfortunately he was trying to hump anything that moved ... including my leg :o

We thought maybe it would change his wee personality but actually he is still a sweet natured, loving and somewhat cheekie wee chap.

It doesn't seem to have annoyed him at all:D:-4

oh yes we were told to wait till at least two months after her season too:) but i see what you mean about her going in to season first,, would be a nightmare keeping them apart. I think the main way the personality changes is to make them less aggressive as i have heard of people getting them done for this purpose,,, but saying that others say it dont make any difference to their personality,,,maybe it just coincides with their age and the different phases they go through ,,(yes just like kids:D)

and suzy,, our Sheila is the same as far as food is concerned,, i have had to tell hubs to stop just feeding her treats every time she looks at him:rolleyes: she would live on them rather than eat her food,,, she actually dont eat a lot for a staffie

Our dog was a rescue dog which we got at eight weeks old-we were the third owners. It is one of the conditions of the dog's trust that any dogs get castrated and bitches speyed.

Realistically any pups he fathered would either get drowned at birth or dumped in the dog's home since he's a mutt. He appears to be a cross between a dalmation and a collie. Or as I like to think of it the love child of a pedigree dalmatian princess and a bit of rough from the farm.

Know what you mean though, but realistically unless you are prepared to accept the responsibility of unwanted pups you need to do it. You will need to do the bitch as well unless you are intending to breed her-once is all it takes.

Aw hunny! I know just how you feel! We had our mog done when he was 6 months old. But since it was his sister he was living with....well, we couldnt have any of THAT in the house now!

Our mog, Clyde, has stayed an incredible young kittenish personality even tho he is 3 now. He stills plays fetch and everything! But we refuse to have our female done as it's such an intrusive procedure, for WHAT? Our own convienience? They are house cats, so will live nice long moggy lives. Clyde doesnt miss his bits, so all is well. Good luck sweety. It will be okay.

Poppy is booked in to get done in the morning, the vets said that if she gets done before her 1st season she stands less chance of cancer in the mamory glands, we talked and think it's better that they are both poorly together, Jim had to sneak out the house with Poppy for her walks today.

Alfie is not great, one of us is going to sleep in the same room as him tonight, good news is that he has had a little food and water.

After much debate in the Oscar household, we have decided that puppy 'Rosie' will be allowed to have one litter. this is not something we decide lightly. Over the years all of my bitches have had one litter at least and we find that it makes them a better tempered dog. We would not do it unless we are sure there are homes lined up for them. She's still too young but when she gets to about two tears old, we will have her mated.

We always vet our new owners and do two home checks, one un-announced and keep in touch with them.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. R.L. Binyon

My big boy (140pounds) hasn't been fixed. I've heard they mellow out a little, but he's mellow enough! :yh_rotfl

My baby girl (75lbs) was fixed at 6months.

I had hubby "sprayed" 14 years ago and it didn't do a thing for his personality!! :-5:-5:-5

and if you had a litter of pups by them no one would want them and we could not possibly keep all of them ... then the only option would be to have them put down .... which we could not bare to do so this was the only option really

its a damn shame that people cant get past the pedigree thing ,why spend hundreds on a pure breed dog that is interbred and has nervouse disposition of a housewife with pms whose husband run off with the baby sitter and has ran out of prozac :thinking:

when you can get a lovely dog great with kids for nothing :-6:-6

Yeah, I'm enough to zombify anyone!

i agree with the whole "getting them fixed" thing. Male dogs have a much higher chance of testicular cancer after age 5. Females have higher chances of something too, but I can't remember what.

Having a litter of non pure breed pups would cost you quite a bit too. You'd have to make sure they have all their shots, etc, before you can adopt them out. Plus we'd be the same as you and Suzy...once the puppies were born, it would be so hard to get rid of them, if not impossible.
