In each room, one at a time, put everything in piles in a corner of the room so all the surfaces and drawers and cupboards are empty. Then put what you can justify back into its right place, put the rest into piles labelled throw, give or sell. Then throw, give or sell what's in the piles. Then do another room.
It's a good method, it lets you wash and dust at the same time.
Spring's traditional for doing this - you can put it off until March.
Suzy's allowed to sit in a chair and read a book and occasionally give instructions or advice.

That is the method I use. And I have plenty of tall trash bags to fill with the stuff I don't want. Just too lazy at the mo to go do it. Such a bore chore.:wah:

Another rule, one I use.
If it hasn't got a definite use, throw it. Might come in useful is not good enough - throw it.
Stuff for hobbies, etc. appraise in a similar way. If you're definitely going to take up or continue with the hobby, keep it. Otherwise dispose of.

If Sue weren't on the sofa mending, I would gladly take her here for cleaning out the mess in the storage room. She would want to get rid of the crap in it. Hey, and she get's the free meal for helping.:wah:

I have found I cannot do it by myself. I get caught up in the emotiomal attachment I have to things and cannot bare to part with items.
So, for me, what is working best is to let our girls come in and sort and go through things. Mind you, I've had to have them pull things out of the trash................. like the the tops of 3 bottles of Princess perfume. I'm saving them to make a tic tac toe game. Now I realize they would not know this, but really...... I had them all lined up in the medicine cabinet and they had to have known they were "special". :yh_rotfl

If you haven't WORN IT, USED IT or LOOKED at it in the last 6 months then get rid.
For any treasures you can't bear to get rid of and don't want to put on display get a nice storage box and put the stuff in there.
Sort boxes of old photos and start an album...or albums.... chuck the rest !
You had some pleasure out of this stuff once....now it's time to let some one else ENJOY.....
If you can make a bob or two take unwanted stuff to car boot or take to charity shop.
My DIL has made over £100 lately selling some of her kids clothes on e-bay. Some clothes have never been worn....kids grow so fast.
I guess books, DVDs of CDs are a bit different....there's not much in my small collection that I would get rid of.

Goodwill is an excellent choice Peg. They are always begging for people to donate and I have shopped there several times. I would like to share with the FG crowd...do not donate to those boxes that are in parking lots, etc. as they ship all that stuff overseas and they are for profit or religious organizations. None of the stuff that you put in those boxes goes to anyone in the US.

Jimbo, your poem is really clever.
Make a goal: throw out 5 things each day. I'm a horder, I do not do this.
