American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by taking out an olive from First Class salads.

About 200,000,000 M&Ms are sold each day in the United States.

Because metal was scarce, the Oscars given out during World War II were made of wood.

The first bomb the Allies dropped on Berlin in WWII killed the only elephant in the Berlin Zoo.

The average raindrop falls at 7 miles per hour.

If you put a drop of liquor on a scorpion, it will instantly go mad and sting itself to death.

The original name for butterfly was flutterby.

One in fourteen women in America is a natural blonde. Only one in sixteen men is.

In Disney’s Fantasia, the Sorcerer to whom Mickey played an apprentice was named Yensid (Disney spelled backward).

It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with.

28% of Africa is classified as wilderness. In North America, its 38%.

The name Wendy was made up for the book Peter Pan. There was never a recorded Wendy before it.

The Oxford English Dictionary gives examples of butterfly back to pre-Norman times in Old English, it has no record of any instance of "flutterby".

It gives as entymology:[from BUTTER noun.1 + FLY noun.; with Old English buttorfléoe cf. Dutch botervlieg, earlier botervlieghe, modern German butterfliege. The reason of the name is unknown: Wedgwood points out a Dutch synonym boterschijte in Kilian, which suggests that the insect was so called from the appearance of its excrement.] and the earliest uses it records area1000 ÆLFRIC Voc. in Wr.-Wülcker 121 Papilio, buttor~fleoe. a1300 Floriz & Bl. 473 {Th}er fliste ut a buterfliye Are ihc wiste on min iye. It's the word "fact" in this context that I dislike.

Why do people invent these fictions?

Why does anyone spread them?

How can they even be amusing if they're untrue?

It takes longer to debunk them than it does to copy/paste them onto yet another site.

No, I'm not getting at you, I do this every time someone copy/pastes drivel like this. These constructed fictions are a direct attack on civilized values.

My three questions are real questions, I'd love to know the answers to them.

You seriously think that?

It's why people say you can't trust what you read on the Internet.

It's vandalism. People edit lies into Wikipedia too, presumably because they think it's funny, presumably for the same reasons others write lies like these and label them truths and have them copy/pasted by people who share their sense of humour.

It's as funny as Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand - I know lots of people laughed at that but I didn't and I'm right not to.

I'm right not to find this funny too. It devalues knowledge. People go around thinking these things are true, they can't distinguish between what's here and what's real. The only way in which you can regard these "facts" as fun is by saying it makes no difference whether what people believe to be true really happened or not. I think it matters.

One more question - would the post you put up have been as funny, in your opinion, if the content had been true, or is the joke that it's full of lies but they're labelled as facts? Would it be as funny a post if it were titled "Some Useless Lies"? Would the lies be as funny if they were smuggled into Wikipedia?

How on earth you can think distributing this stuff is recreation in a refreshing and diverting manner beats me, just as phoning a 78 year old actor for a national radio broadcast to humiliate him with the news that you'd just rogered his grand-daughter beats me as amusing recreation. Both are destructive pointless acts. Both, apparently, amuse a certain type of person.

The inability to trust the accuracy of posts like this might too. If you allow your head to get stuffed up with false "facts" you'll be living in a real world which you misunderstand and, worse still, you'll not know which bits your mistaken about.

How NOT to have fun . . . A tutorial

Put yourself on a smile restriction. NO SMILING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! (dirty looks only to be used with caution: some people smile in response to them and you might accidentally smile in return.... YIKES! )

Do not daydream, EVER! Stay in "reality" at all times. NO FANTASIES or ILLUSIONS!!!

Be self conscious, dwell on your faults, be negative and pessimistic...cultivate the fine art of thinking ruts unless you prefer to dabble in logical fallacies. NO happy thought. Analyze everything.

Avoid novelty, systematically reject new ways of thinking or doing , leave nothing unplanned, agonize over every detail!

Carefully avoid all activities that might turn out to be fun.

Spoil other people's fun ... if you can't have any, why should they, right???

Avoid people, especially friends. Hugs, eye winking, playing footsy and all forms of affection could lead to fun

Be as physically inactive as possible ... DON'T MOVE AT ALL if you can help it.

Stay clean...don't get dirty, scuzzy, smelly or sweaty. Excursions in nature are therefore OUT OF THE QUESTION.

Don't listen to music. And if you do, don't move dance sway or tap your foot.

Eat bland tasteless food. Drink room temperature tap water and never anything else.

Never miss an opportunity to gripe and whine. If you haven't found something wrong in a given situation you haven't looked hard enough!

Afraid not Spot because then you would no doubt google my rebuttal, analyze it and serve another ace and I already told you that tennis isn't my sport!

I could of course copy and post another tutorial called ... "How To Have Fun!"

What you think ... interested?

Well in that case you will have your answer.

The post I put up would have been fun, in my opinion, no matter what.

Personally I found it amusing ... fun ... a joke ... a laugh and quite frankly, I couldn't give a flying **** if the content contained fact or fiction.

Had it been a post that could possibly have caused offence or been libellous, then that would have been different.

Do you Spot really care about what speed raindrops fall or whether an elephant in a Berlin zoo died in a bombing raid 65 years ago?

Personally I doubt it and I suspect that your analytical mind struggles to cope with anything that in your opinion is out of sync with what you believe to be appropriate for this site.

You have your way of looking at life and I have mine and what works for you may not work for me. However that does not mean that either of us should accept the others outlook in this regard.

Vive le difference

Well said Spot.

I don't care if folk think i am a 'Mary Whitehouse'. It was a degrading crime against a dignified respectable man. Brand and Ross need sacking at the least. No-one really found it funny but no doubt some pillock will write it up in Wikki as one of those all time great British gags.

Then some other pillock will quote it as fact on a forum.

I had no problem with the post. I took exception to the thread title.

Spot, please stop nitpicking...most of us are lucky if we know 1/4 as much as you do. Most of us won't retain most of, or all of these things. You seem to absorb everything that most of us don't. I just want you to know that with a lot of people, we find things like this as a short distraction to enjoy and to escape into, even if for just a wee time. We don't even care how true they are, like I said, it's a fun little distraction that so many of us so desperately need.

It's all cool Ryan...I know a lot of people that like stuff like this and I know I enjoyed reading it. I don't care if some of the things are wrong, or evenly partially wrong...it's an escape for me for just a bit and gets my mind off of everything else that I'm struggling with. Thanks hun, just keep it up. :)

I'll ask you instead then, Shel, because it'll help me understand. if the thread had been labelled "Some Useless Lies" instead, or even "Some Entertaining Lies", would you have found the post as interesting?

You're quite right about the absorbing bit, if I see a post making a statement of fact and someone asks me five years later if I know the answer to a question related to it, the "fact" will be there ready to produce. What won't be is where I got it from or how reliable it is. It's so much easier for me to filter the falsehoods when I see them and remember that they're false. I don't have the option of not recalling it, though. Maybe that's why it annoys me so much. Most of the time nowadays I refuse to produce facts from memory simply because people do this to me, it never used to be such a problem. I haven't used Burroughs Medium Systems Assembler for over thirty years but I still know the operation codes, the bits in each variant and how many addresses to include, it just won't go away. That makes me a fairly typical programmer.

Probably, cuz as much as I like weird facts, I like weird"myths" if you may. We all know of Myth's and Facts and their differences. Sometimes it's easier to remember the myth because it's more pleasant than the fact...or even more nostalgic. Me personally, would like a debate about values, thoughts and perceptions instead of trying to debate things where I have to find a reliable link...that's just too much work for me. :yh_rotfl

I think I have a solution for you though spot....get a little dumber like most of us are already!!! :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

Hi Oscar ... Is this a code? Is it maybe like Cockney slang?

I googled it and could only come up with this ...

Catherine Tate, the catchphrase queen, woman of a thousand faces and cultural icon continues to shape the minds and vocabularies of schoolgirls everywhere.

Hi Wildhorses, I love San Francisco ... my favorite city after New York!

It was just a bit of fun as you say and sort of akin to chicken licken saying the sky was fallin'!

To me the emphasis shoulda been on "useless" ...

of no use; not serving the purpose or any purpose; rather than on "facts" ...

" ... generally, a fact is defined as something that is true, something that actually exists, or something having objective reality that can be verified according to an established standard of evaluation.

There is a range of other uses, depending on the context. For example, fact may be argued under authority of a specific pedagogy, such as scientific facts or historical facts.

Rhetorical assertion of fact is often forwarded without an implied or express basis of authority."

and if anyone had told me a raindrop fell at a speed of a thousand feet per second

I wouldn't have queried it ... cos who cares?

Oh yes Spot cares!

Ryan.
