As the member who posted the original thread, before I go to bed let me say something.

The thread sparked a very lively debate which cannot be a bad thing on a Forum like this.

Hey I'm not a Moderator but unfortunately some of the posts got a little too personal towards the end.

Men like Jester and I will always defend America against allcomers no matter what and us patriotic Americans sometimes get a little hot under the collar at times like this

I am pleased that more Americans stepped up to the plate at the end and voiced their own opinion.

Love for the country of your birth is an admirable trait and defending that country is as well.

I'm sad that this thread has descended into nationalistic nonsense as usual, but we all go a bit bananas sometimes I guess.

To all Americans, (even the mad ones stroking their guns wrapped in bibles) of course we know your not the enemy, and we are not your enemy either we are your friends, but friends are allowed to have a go at each other sometimes. We know we are soft touches, you know you are mental, Its all just been a bit emotional recently; so everybody just sit down at the back of the bus and play nice.

But in a mood of mutual recriminations and hostilities between fellow Westerners; I say we all have a go at Ireland-bashing today. Yes, that little green teddy bear shaped place in the North Atlantic, Ireland.

Tricky customers the Irish, didn't bother getting involved in WW II, which we called "the Emergency" instead as it sounded less frightening, we spent most of that time organizing a dancing competition in Co. Kildare; it was a great success apparently, though the captured German pilots were total rubbish at set dancing, couldn't handle Jig timing.

No we don't like wars, unless they are against other Irish people, which we love and can't get enough of, but don't call wars, we call them "The Troubles" or "The difficulties" or "The Spot of Bother". Occasionally also we have a go at the Brits just for a bit of devilment, but they are quite powerful so we can only go so far before the get annoyed and call around to our place and beat the crap out of us again.

So, we Irish get away with far too much anyway, and need a good talking to; here are a few of our recent escapades.

Apparently we have been poisoning the pork supplies of the world for weeks now by feeding pigs plastic bags. But sure look, people are eating too many rashers anyway, its a health thing. :-6

We have been fighting with the Czechs because their president is a bit mental and he loves us because we ended the EU forever by voting the Lisbon treaty down, but in true Irish fashion we have sobered up now, and we decided that was a bad idea so we want to vote again and vote yes, just to annoy the Brits heh heh. :rolleyes:

In all, less than 20 posters of which five have strong views which they are very ready to express - strongly - two Americans, two Brits, one Aussie.

A brawl between five people amongst the whole membership of Forum Garden is not institutionalised bashing of any country. It is five people - very likely not at all representative of their country - disagreeing noisily amongst themselves.

Open your eyes and look at what is going on in the world. You call that civilized? Humans are not cilvilized. Humans are animals. Power cant be shared. Either you have the power over others or someone has power over you. Even if the power were to temporarily be equalized, it would soon fall off to one end again. The reason is because someone will always try to gain more power....and the world would soon fall back into struggle. The struggle for power. That is human nature. It is human nature to do battle. Some are afraid of that, but that is the way it is. Get used to it and stop fantasizing about something that can never be. To imagine that we can have a peaceful world is just ridiculous. Keep dreaming though, if it calms your nerves. Keep hiding from the truth....all of you. You're wrong for the simple reason that I like most Americans. I'm on the side of most Americans. I'd like to see the lives of most Americans improved. It worries me that most Americans lead such a downtrodden existence. I express solidarity with most Americans. What happens is that everytime we have these discussions here on FG, it ends up getting personal which is a shame as I like people from every walk of life but I may not have liked something their government did in the past, doesn't bare any slant on the poster here though.

Nation bashing and personal bashing is the same thing. Where is the debate? Nation bashing is not debate. That is the difference I was referring to. It is the tone of the posts that is bashing. Not the criticism. Huge difference. That is why it gets personal....the tone of the posts. When the tone is accusatory then it is no longer debate...it is bashing. It is an indirect personal attack.

WSV is a TLA (Three Letter Acronym) meaning, as I said, "with strong views". You'll not find it because (as I said) Pammy invented it two hours ago in this thread and explained what it meant when she used it.

My first post went entirely unanswered. My second post also went entirely unanswered. Both were relevant responses to the opening post. Perhaps the trouble with the tone of the thread is the way the opening post sounded?
