Brown declared he was getting tough on immigration to be a accussed of being 'rascist' by the Tory back-benchers.
Will they follow this through?

Well I certainly hope they do!
I am sick of immigrants being given housing before Brits who pay taxes are!
There are always stories in the news of immigrants playing the system.
Only last week there was the Indian woman who was given a 7 bedroom mansion costing £12,000 a week and said it was laughable when compared to the luxury they lived in at home in India!
Well, duh! Go home then! :-5
Londoners needing rehousing were being offered homes in Birmingham! It's hardly local FGS! But the poor Bangladeshi woman, who spoke no English, was given a home in Central London to be with all the other Bangladeshi-speaking ex-pats! It's a standing joke that the only words immigrants need are House, Food and Money! :-5
I'm sorry to be a grouch as I really don't object to these people being given aid.
What I do object to is them receiving aid that tax-paying Brits don't get! I know several couples with 2 or 3 young children who live in one room because they can't get housing. I know of people in their 70's who rent and who still work because if they couldn't pay their rent they'd be homeless and because their local council refuses to help them. I know of people living in damp and mouldy houses which are affecting their health, who get no help or benefits from the council.
And I think the worst thing of all is all our old folk who are ignored by the government. They lived through the War, they lived through deprivation, hardship and loss of loved ones and the government give them a measly few pounds extra for heating allowance when the weather is at its bitterest!
Stuff PC! There should be a government who believes in Common Sense and in protecting it's own! Protect and help the old. Protect and help the taxpayers, the Brits. THEN help the immigrants. Oh, and another thing, if after 7 years or so, they decide an immigrant actually needs to be deported, then DEPORT him! DON'T let him escape and vanish into his ethnic community. There was a programme on last Christmas showing a gang of thieves and shoplifters, caught on CCTV as they operated all along London's Oxford Street. All of them were illegal immigrants! But it seems that as fast as they deport them, the illegals just turn around and head back into the UK again! DO something about it Gordie!

Wish we had this bill in the US the only people who have to wait the 10 years here for housing are the Elderly and those that really need it. The rest are just handed the money or shown the house and that includes Immigrants. :-5:-5
ALOHA!!
MOTTO TO LIVE BY:
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.
WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"

It's exactly why peeps like yourself and i know many more, made Gordon Brown make this statement some months ago. We got so used to the lying Judas Blair, that we tend to dis-regard anything Brown says. Without going into every arena of home policy, we are now beginning to see that Brown does what he says. I have to admit, it's shocked me also to find him sticking to his policie's.
Many blame Labour for immigration being out of control, when in fact, it was the Tory's who critisized Brown and called him 'racist' when he said he was going to tackle this some months ago. If i remember correctly, he replied that 'To curb immingration is common sense, not rasicism.'
We do have a large population of genuine immigrants who work and pay taxes. As in all area's it is the one's who take advantage that give all of them bad feeling in this country. For those, i agree with kazala...If you don't like it... Go home.

I TOTALLY agree with this statement! Compared to the US we are spatially a small country with a limited carrying capacity. We don't have enough room for the millions of new homes needed, not without losing a huge percentage of green belt. We also don't produce enough food to support the millions of immigrants arriving annually. This means we need to import much much more which combines to increase costs and greenhouse gases. To allow immigration to continue at it's current rate is self-destructive, imo!

I SO agree with this statement!

oh oh you,ve beaten the grumps to a story
but this is too little too late and a classic case of a weak labour government trying desperately to cling to power with an election only months away

How nice to see you join my thread Panto
Gordon Brown is playing down the idea of a snap June election, and the Tory's have called off their cry for Brown to go to the country now Labour are ahead of the Tory's in the polls.
As i said in my previous posts, Brown made this policy months ago and i must admit that i am surprised he has stuck to it. It is not something that he has come up with to win an election. Don't forget that the main of immigrants actually vote Labour so this is going to really hack them off with Labour.
Brown talked of this and made his statement months ago before any talk of an election. Bills are not passed through over night. There is months and months before a new even proposed bill comes to light. The Tory's are just sick that Brown beat them to it. (As well as withdrawing troops from Iraq).
Labour don't have to cling to power or anything else. All you have to do is google 'polls' to see what the trend is.
However, as Mr Oscar has just said 'The p.c. and human rights brigade will be out in force over this one'.
Is it so shocking to see a PM actually pput his people before others???????

I think us British are still in shock that we have a Prime Minister who is actually putting his people before others and actually listening to his people. Gordon Brown has only been in power a year but we are so used to lying Judas's like Tony Blair, we gave up believing them a long time ago.
Of course, the opposition called him a 'racist' when he announced he was curbing immigration some months ago and 'the human rights' brigade will also be out in force over this one.We also have Jack Straw who has announced this week that he is getting tough on the 'Human Rights' brigade.
I always said it would take a strong leader to do this and maybe we are seeing him emerge here. This is radical change for our country and i welcome it. I hope Obama does the same for you.
