Junk Mail

Post by Kindle »

In the latest issue of TIME magazine, Jeremy Caplan wrote an interesting article about de-cluttering our mailboxes.

FACT: Americans get 40 lbs of junk mail each year

FACT: Each household gets 848 pieces of junk mail a year

FACT: 19 Billion catalogs are mailed ever year

FACT: 89% of poll respondents support a Do Not Mail list

My Question: If all but 11% of Americans do not want to receive junk mail, why am I still getting so much unwanted junk mail which I trash unopened?

Mr Caplan's answer is to sign up at ProQuo.com. He says it is the most comprehensive free service to opt out of credit-card solicitations, catalogs, Valpak coupons, sweepstakes announcements and other postal plaque.

How do you handle junk mail?

I like junk mail!

I use the free newspapers to line the bunny cages.

When 'order our catalogue' invitations come through the door I return them with the name and address of someone who's annoyed me on them - at the moment it's the neighbours from hell! So they get bombarded with unwanted catalogues. (I especially like the ones for stairlifts and things for the over 50's to annoy them with!) :wah:

(They're young and stupid!)

We used to get a lot of solicitations from estate agents to 'sell our house'.

I must return some with the neighbours address on too! :wah:

We also get charity shop bags which I fill and leave out. (We hoard way too much junk!)

Anything else goes in the recycling bin to get recycled and save trees! :D

First I take our name off the catalog and shred it and then the whole thing goes into the recycle paper bag.

Yup, I do that too. I rip off any names and addresses and put them in a drawer. Then when there is a handful, I shred the lot!

The worst ones are for credit cards where they put your whole name and address in several different places all over the paperwork. You have to hunt them down!

The other worst one is the bill for Sky. On one side of the envelope is your name and address, on the reverse is an ad for Sky with your Christian name in 4 inch high letters in some bright eye-catching colour and a request for you to buy one of their promotions! Arrggghhh! :-5

Lol, yes it is. Sometimes I change their name too so if my neighbours name was, say, Jane Castle, I might change it to Joan Custard. Working on the theory that people get annoyed when their name is mis-spelt. :wah:

Sometimes you get booklets full of advertising through the door and you can send off loads of requests in other people's names. You might have noticed I have a bit of an evil side! :wah:

You know, they might well do! :yh_rotfl

After all, they say they're losing millions in revenue because people prefer to use email instead of Royal Mail. I'm simply helping to boost the economy! :yh_rotfl :yh_rotfl
