Why The Uptick?

Post by Lon »

Some, when speaking, will finish a spoken sentence with an uptick, making a statement sound more like question. I never hear this from people in the U.S., but do in NZ. Most of the people seem to have Irish back rounds, but not all. When I hear them speak like that it sounds so tentative and unsure and gives me the impression of extreme timidity. I don't mean this as a put down of anyone's speaking habits, but I am curious about what brings this manner of speaking about.

Some people from certain area's of London do this also, I've also noticed some Australians do it also.

We end evry statement and sentence with an upturn. Same as people do when asking a question or tell a lie. It's very interesting because how can you tell an Australian is lying if they upturn in everyday conversation?

They don't upturn?

Britain got the 'Upspeak' when we inherited the Australian soap opera 'neighbours', and even 'bouncer' the dog barked in 'upspeak', but basically, it's all Kylie Minogue's fault.

It is however, far better prefered in Britain than 'On shut up cos i aint even dun nuffin or nuffin or summat'.

Yes but fuzzy, when it's your prime Minister saying 'Oh shut up cos i aint even done nuffin or nuffin or summat', it's a little embarressing. :wah:

Yes I have noticed that some do that here too. It is usually younger people. For awhile I just thought it was some phase. But then I noticed many people do it. I have no idea where this comes from or why they do it. It can be annoying at times. I feel like I have to keep saying yes to every sentence they say.

Then, only in Scotland would you see the sight of an Al-Quaeda terrorist on fire being rugby tackled to the ground and punched. That was true. It really happened. :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
