The Love Ireland Thread

Come on, we just had a thread about Loving America. So lets have a thread about why you all love that much maligned country Ireland.

Now I know that in recent times, our glorious leader Pat McTree has been unpopular for instigating his "war on anger" and our policies in relation to the Zoroastrians has been controversial.

Of course the failure of Irish Pigs to get onto the pig lorries heading to Breakfast town in recent days has also been a source of pain for many people.

As has our policy of jailing all rogue comedians in Camp Joke on that Island owned by the cubans outside Cork. But thats not us ordinary Irish, thats just our government, and we still want to be loved.

So I am asking my fellow FGers what is it that they still love about Ireland?

Positive posts only please, lets not get into another endless debate about Irish foreign policy in the middle east. :wah:

My BIL who just recently died of cancer found out his ancestors came from Ireland, so him and my sister went over twice for a visit and he loved Ireland. His last wishes were for his ashes to be scattered there. He had a good Irish last name of O'Shea :-4

My Dad's father was from Donegall which is Southern Ireland. I have always wanted to visit Ireland but never have. It has this appeal to me, I think because all the Irish I know are so warm hearted and fun loving folk. I imagine the landscape to be much like Wales which is magnificent. My cousin is with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was stationed in Ireland for years, he had only good words to say of the Irish people he was protecting.

Myself and hubs did have a long weekend planned to Ireland, sailing from Holyhead but the morning we were due to sail, they had had bad storms and our catamaran got bashed up on the rocks and they had cancelled any other sails that morning so we ended up in the Isle of Man instead..

Now I love food and Irish Stew,Colcannon and Irish potato farls have me drooling, but I only have tasted English or Welsh versions and I want to taste it in Ireland.

Ireland has a magical and mysterious feel for me, Pixies and little green men shakin their booties, and the Blarney Stone and I imagine every pub has an inprompto sing song every night and the men have guiness moustaches to be sure to be sure:sneaky::sneaky::sneaky:

I am hoping to get over to Ireland in 2009 with hubs and kids, none of us have ever been.

I've always wanted to visit Ireland! My 3rd great grandmother sailed over from Ireland in the mid 1800's. So I know there's some Irish in my Heinz 57 mix.

The landscape, the folklore, and overall spirit has always attracted me. Do you still put milk out for the fairies?

It has to be The Book of the Taking of Ireland if you're looking for the greatest aspect of the place. Nowhere with an unbroken civilization, outside of India, has such a rich and extensive history. We Brits may have tried to tear down and bury Indian and Irish both but I'm glad we failed.

Though if you tell me it's "an accurate and reliable account of the history of Ireland" I'll have words with you.

Strictly speaking the celts have a long history the irish are just one of many tribes. Being scots I can of course claim to be descended from some of the earliest emigrants from that little island or as they were called on those days-invaders. If it wasn't for the irish and their opportunistic migratory habits I might have been anglo-saxon:eek:

What I like best about most Irish people is that they are very straightforward and not afraid to say it like it is. No games. You always know where you stand with them.

I was in Dublin last weekend as was half the world judging by the crowds in Grafton street, but there was no bad natured pushing and shoving people still said sorry when they tripped over you or visa versa!

I love the music and the food it reminds me of my childhood nanny Rose always made boiled bacon and cabbage when we went to visit her, of course a pint of the black stuff is always nice. Nanny Rose sometimes got a bit carried away and I remember her turning up late at night plastered and my dad refusing to let her into the house telling her to go home because she was drunk., she then went and stood in the middle of the road and singing seven drunken nights at the top of her voice!

My aunt gave me my first ring a Claddagh when I was about 7 (I still have it) and the first jewellry my children got was a Claddagh ring from me..

My MIL's father & mother are both from County Donegall. What a scream. They are from Creashlaw/chreashla? I can' never prounounce it. We still have relly's over there and are thinking of taking a trip to the green island somewhere in April. Donegal is on the left side of Ireland on the Atlantic ocean side.

I love Ireland, I've been there many times. :-6

It's beautiful and peaceful and I love the people and the pubs and the little shops in the little towns. And the tiny country roads that barely have room for one car and someone always ends up in the ditch to let the other person pass unless it's cows blocking your way and then you have to wait until they decide to move.

I love the food and I love all the hot goodies you can now get at pretty much any filling station. :yh_drool

And most importantly my husband is from there and my kids were christened there.

It's a shame, I'm 1/4 Irish and have no idea about the culture. The only references I have seen have been on tv and in movies and they all seem to like to stereotype the Irish as idiots.

Actually I love the thought of Ireland even though I've never been there. I will be in August, though, for a short visit, in Belfast.

My maternal grandmother was a Quinn.

In all sincerity I love things Irish. My perception is derived upon from the many far away places Irish music has carried myself. I am enchanted with the beautiful sounds that come from your country.

Also with much sincerity through the years I have come to admire you for your dedication to wanting to do the right thing and be a good man. You have my respect.

Another fellow Irish gal has also given me rewards through her thoughtfulness and perseverence and Im lucky to have met her.

This is one of the songs that send me off to mysterious places.
