America is the home of the blues, of jazz, of rock and roll, of Dylan, F Scott Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Andrew Jackson, John Steinbeck, Gore Vidal, Elvis Presely, Edgar Allen Poe, JFK, Abraham Lincoln, Marylin Monroe, Richard Feynman, Omar Bradley, Louis Armstrong, John Heuston, Mae West, Henry Miller, Stephen Sondheim, Emily Dickinson, George Gershwin, Ann Rand, Spike Lee, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Walt Whitman, Thomas Jefferson, Woody Allen, Benjamin Franklin to name a very few of the great men and women that country has produced.
Its ideals of a free society, unencumbered by the dogma's of class, state religion, or authoritarian government have inspired millions of Europeans through the years to either go there, or try to emulate the highest ideals of a country governed "by the people, for the people" in their own lands from France in 1789 to the Eastern European countries of the 1980s.
In 1944 hundreds of thousands of American troops helped to free continental Europe from the grip of Nazi tyranny. In the aftermath of the war, the US protected Western Europe from any further advance by the Red Army, and provided European nations with the money and security to rebuild themselves following the shattering events of that war, including the enemy, Germany. For that alone, we in Europe must always remember the Americans were our true friends in times of need.
No America is not perfect, it has never quite lived up its own ideals, and perhaps not quite the place its own propaganda makes it out to be sometimes, but it has still come closer than most countries in this world in giving the maximum number of its people (almost all immigrants or the descendents of), the best chance of individual freedom and opportunity to succeed based on their ability and not on their original nationality, creed or race.
Of course Europeans and Americans differ sharply on some points, but in truth we are all part of the same civilization and need each other's understanding and support more than we realize sometimes. I can't imagine what a world would be like without the USA, but it would probably be a duller, greyer place. The US is truly is a unique and wonderful country. :yh_flag

FOC THREAD PART 1
the love america thread
I understand where you're coming from, Jimbo, and your heart's in the right place, but Hon - why do we need a thread like this???????? What are we trying to prove, and why do we need to prove anything???? I've spent a lot of time in the States, and have always felt at home there, have some great American friends, with whom I've shared good times and bad. From that starting point I have, up till now, felt able to speak freely about life, politics, etc etc in our countries, exchanging views, all in the spirit of genuine desire to understand, learn etc. There has never been any problem, even - when our cultural differences were apparent. I've lived in a lot of places, am married to an Englishman and my family are originally French -so all this nationalistic dissing goes against the grain. I don't like the way things have got in here. Incendiary threads seem to have taken over, dominated by the usual strident few, alienating the less militant majority. It's sad. I'm posting in a few threads tonight, but I gotta disassociate from all this crap, and maybe it's time to take a break.

Well just because someone does not agree with you does not mean they are dissing your country. These words may seem familiar to you....that is because they are your words from another thread with regard to anti american dissing. It appears that you feel the same when your country/nationality is "dissed" as we do. So in the end we are not so different after all. However I feel it was unfair of you to invalidate our feelings about being "dissed" and then to turn around and express the same reaction when dissed yourself. Our feelings about being treated like this are just as valid as yours are.

I meant no one was dissing America... I never thought anyone was being disrespectful of Australia. The usual crap about France is just the usual crap about France. I'm an Aussie. And the few Europeans we've had on this board have left.

Nobody has dissed me - I've just had enough of the general apparent unpleasantness in here. Now we're told who Touchstone was. I didn't know that. I've only just learnt that some of you in the brawling threads are all really great mates and this is all just a big game for you. With part of it played behind the scenes in phone calls etc. What many of the rest of us - not in the know - read, comes across as something else. And you all seem to have almost unlimited time to interact, make your points, follow discussion etc, kiss and make up, play on etc etc.
I'm done.

I don’t think this thread is wrong. The fact is that the US, out of all of our countries probably also takes the most abuse.
You never hear anyone slamming Australia, (whay would anyone anyway?)
The only one who slags Ireland are the Irish, :wah:
Everyone avoids talking about England (just kidding….relax, all the Irish are over their shopping and keeping your economy going due to your weak pound and cheap prices… we actually lov….. nope just can’t say it…) We really really like you!;)
Canadians don’t p1ss anyone off.
So why not every once and a while remind the yanks that despite all the political satire, we actually lov…. (nope just can’t say it there either), a sure, what the feck, we love ya, with all your crappy foreign policies and all.
And now that you have an Irish president with O’Bama, we love ya all the more. :yh_shamrk

It's nice to see you Duckie. I was quite upset last night, but today is a new day. I don't think I can completely leave FG. I do have a lot of good friends here. I am quite certain that I have never ever even once made any remark in FG which could be construed as anti-American. I am clearly pro-America, and always have been.
The first time I met an American was in the docklands of Lisbon. Not a good place for a young girl to be lost after dark. A big black man loomed marched up to me and I was terrified. He turned out to be an American sailor, told me I shouldn't be where I was ma'am- as if by then I needed telling - and got me the heck out of there, into a cab and paid the driver to take me home. That was my very first experience of America. I add this bit of appreciation to the love America thread. You did good, Jimbo.

Hi Pam, yes we got your card and cool little calendar. I love getting all these neat things from the world over.
Oh yes, I was on a rant the other day regarding Idgie and stuff that went down between her and another member. She is taking a well needed break from the FG for a bit as her mom just died and she has tons of stuff on her plate.
At the moment, Quin has just been named Student of the Week and I need a stuffed penquin fast:wah:

Thanks Chezzie and Duckie and congrats to Quin!! WOW. And thank you for your lovely card too!!! Glad you liked the calendar.
And Jimbo, I do the same when I'm in France. Les rosbifs and ze froggies. That is quite different. My son lives in London and my younger daughter in Paris. We're back and forward. And there;s plenty of good natured joshing.. accompanied by ze shrugging of ze gallic shoulders etc. Good natured is the important part, and that's what I've been missing in most of the rants around FG lately. I just wanted to make one point about those exact differences of intent. I've done that now in the other thread, and intend from this point to stay away from threads involving the few posters whose good nature I doubt. It's a personal judgment there, I appreciate, but real life has loads of challenges right now, and I come to FG for relaxation not further stress, no matter how it's dressed up.
So - I guess it's the what we had for dinner threads or good old tlw now... Maybe the Santa threads..

More good things about America - just off the top of my head in no particular order
Corn bread, gumbo, pecan pie, ice skating in Millenium Park, Chi Town or in Central Park. The New York sense of humour er humor. Blues in New Orleans. Cornfields as high as a elephant's eye. Kids playing baseball. The way people decorate their houses for festivals. The hoe down. Cool jazz. The beat poets. Route 66. Chili. Some of those awesome Mississipppppi river towns - like St Charles, MO. Mountain men. Camping in the woods dodging black bars. The Joisey Shore. Tybee Island. The squares of Savannah. Magnolia trees. Hip hop and gansta rap. 4th July parades and fireworks. Autumn colors in the Catskills. Soul. The Smokey Mountains. The Chicago Art Institute miniatures rooms. Chesapeake Bay. The Appalachian Trail. The hospitality. Alaska. Surfing in shark free Lake Michigan. The awesome ski mountains of Colorado etc. The friendliness just about all the people I ever met. Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. Real Oklahoma cowboys. Rodeos. Cajun dancing. Zydeco. The generosity. Harley Davidsons bikes. The Heartland Flyer train. Woodpeckers. Bluejays. Cardinals. The call of a coyote. Spotting a turkey. Deer. The stylish glassware of Santa Fe. Turquoise jewellery. Hiawatha. The poems of Robert Frost, TS Eliot. Meryl Streep. The Prairie Home Companion. Pecan pie.
You, my dear, are one of the reasons we love our Aussie friends so much. :-4

What a sweet thing to say, Shelbell!!!
I shall probably wake up in the middle of the night, now my brain is in love-America-thread mode, thinking of a heap of other things. Good memories. It's been nearly a year since I"ve been in your country. Much too long.

If you ever do, and you make it to the Chicago, Illinois area, let me know, I'd love to meet you.

Surely you jest Shelbell.. Where the heck are you??? I have friends scattered widely in the US but my central point for a lot of years has been Illinois. More central IL than Chicago, but with frequent visits there. Round Springfield, Carlinville, Gillespie, St Lou MO, etc. I became at one time an honorary sheaf of corn. Grin. Just kidding. If you don't want to publish your location here can you pm me??? I LOVE Chicago!!!!!!!!!!

I love Carl Sandburg too. That poem has the feel of the city exactly right somehow.

I'm in the very north central part, about 90 miles west of Chicago. Not to far from central IL, only a couple hour drive.

Sort of round Utica? I'm not so familiar with up there though I once got lost on the way to Galena (ended up in Iowa), which is probably completely in the wrong direction.

no, it's a city called Rockford and we are at the top of the map...but galena isn't far from us. Galena is about straight west of us...not far at all. :-6

but my views about the war do not make me anti british/anti american
every time i hear on the news that a soldier has been killed i feel relief when i find out its not one of my friends then terrible sadness for the families and children that will not see their,son/brother/father again
and for what a desert dust bowl :-5:-5
You are welcome Jimbutt. I know you are anti-war...I think that most of us, and I can't speak for anyone else, think that some people can only post negatives about America, can't seperate it from politicians and war. Does that make sense? That is the big problem we're talking about and having a really hard time with.

Up near the Wisconsin border. A couple of years ago, I drove with my Illinois friend the whole way round Lake Michigan - we were camping - and I do remember Rockford.

I'd love to visit you one day Shelbell!! Thankyou. As fer the "I know where you live " thing - have any of you seen the new Google Street View. My daughter in Paris sent me a few bits she'd captured as jpg files including the lady of the night who stands outside her door near Pigalle. Romy and he/she chat. This, taken, by satellite. Kind of freaky.... She sent me pics too of my car in the drive of the house I've been packing up for sale in Canberra and of my apartment in Sydney..
