Dunno where that leaves us Aussies. I'm really disappointed in the lot of you. I thought some of us were actually on a similar wavelength the other day, and then I look in again and find it's as if nothing we all said counted at all. Right back where we started. I can't see things in the black and white the way some posters seem to. The world, people, this forum are shades of grey. Often a very nice silver grey. We all have our views. Some of us are inconsistent. I for one can hold two fairly clashing views at one time, occasionally. And we have good and bad days. All of us. To make this into some major, hard-line polarised division of Euros versus Americans seems, to me, to be incredible. It's suddenly like everyone's been painted into a corner and nothing can now move any more. Anything anyone says is subject to the kind of scrutiny one breed of religious scholars once gave to fitting angels on the head of a pin. Why has everyone suddenly now become so supersensitive, so ready to take offence when mostly there isn't any. Or intentional offence from only one or two predictable sources who want to sow discord. Big deal!!! People like that are part of our world and we have to learn to live with it.

As a pretty peaceable Aussie, who doesn't like to wear any label (except maybe Dior), I don't know where I fit into any of this. Sometimes I agree with one poster, sometimes I agree with another. Often I agree with bits of what each of them are arguing.

But it's all just too wearing right now. I felt really positive yesterday, but it's just same old same old.

Lots of people have gone. Not just Americans. English people. Europeans. Aussies. Maybe it really is time to find another online home.

That's where I can't agree, Jester. I'm an Australian, sure, but then so is Fuzzy - and we don't see eye to eye on very much. First and foremost I'm Pam. The Americans on this board are Chonsi and Shelbell and Hope and Kathy Ellen and Okie and Wildhorses and you and JAB, just to name a few. The English, Welsh, Irish, Scots are individuals too, not toeing any consistent party lines, but human beings with their own views and cultures, different each from the other. Not to mention their accents. Sadly, we don't have any actual Europeans left, I don't think. Within Europe, people disagree, as do Americans within America. The 300 million Americans do not all have the same politics, education, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, favourite foods or languages even. They may not even totally agree with each other on healthcare and gun owndership.

I hate the idea of us being typecast and forced into two gangs depending on where we happen to have been born. We're here as individuals, not representatives of the Governments of our countries.

There are some things I like a lot in America and some things I like a lot in Australia and in Europe and Britain too. And other things in each of those places, I like less. If I am no longer able to say any of this, without being immediately written off as a Brit hater or an American hater or whatever - I'd rather say nothing at all.

And it's worse than this now. If I post in an I love America thread, will this henceforth be seen automatically as an anti-British or anti-European sentiment? If I'm Carolly's friend, am I now per se, anti-American and Chonsi's enemy?... If I speak to Jimbo, will this be seen as treason by KathyEllen?. In other words if I'm your friend, Shelbell I won't be able to go to Galbally's party, and will be all alone in the playground... crying into my solitary cup of coffee...

I think it's time for a good sulk...

Hun, I agree with so much of what you just said. I especially like your comment "We're here as individuals, not representatives of the Governments of our countries." I think the main problem is some people can't/don't/ or don't want to realize this when posting.

And Pam, if anyone gets ticked off by where you post, or to who you post, then too bad for them...it's their loss. I will always consider you a friend no matter where you're from or what type of accent you have. :-6:-4

Them's fightin words!!! It's not me that has an accent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, thanks, Shelbell. We'll all recover. People seem to be a bit hypersensitive at the moment. Maybe it's the stresses of the Peace, Love, Joy time of the year.

Actually - I just opened a lovely Chrissie card from America, and another from France.

We're back in Sydney now, and I gotta go to the shop (store, in American.. :) ) and get something for supper. How does baked lemon and dill salmon tail and wild mushroom risotto sound, with maybe some cubed pumpkin on the side?

Well, that's two Americans, one Canadian and one Aussie - and three are in favour of this dinner and one isn't. Can we read any deep politics into this??? :yh_rotfl

I'll set places for the lot of yez (yez is probably an Irishism, so I'm taking the mickey with regard to the Emerald Isle and probably now owe Galbers a big black point) - and maybe we can rustle up some breadsticks. Lemme see - Illinois food??? In Chicago, they do some great Irish nosh, down the middle it's gonna be fried chicken, corn bread and bean casserole kinda thing. Okay, can do!!! And one end of the table will be dry, and can pray first, and the other end can sup some good Aussie wine and raise a glass to life, the angels, friendship and the good health of ForumGarden - and vice versa.

It must be because I'm a mid-westerner in the states and my politics differ from the rest of the country. :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl I could probably do most of the dinner, I always like trying something new, but keep those darn mushrooms away from me. Ick! Thanks for keeping a dry end of the table, but us non drinkers could have some grape juice for a salute with everyone else. :)

I love you guys!!! Just about to serve up. And we can accommodate all your preferences, and a few besides.

When my kids were at school, and it was birthday time, we had logistics problems that leave these little variations for dead. Like - some were vegetarian, some ate meat but not beef, or not pork, Some removed their shoes, others didn't. When one of mine shared his beloved pink piggy bank with a kid from a land where this would have been a devastating insult, everyone just laughed and got on with it. Loads of fun.

Alors - on passe à table!!! As my evil French/Euro side would say. Bon appétit!!

What you describe sounds a lot like my family reunion dinners. We always made room for personal differences and tastes. A smorgasbord of preferences.

I expressed my 'discovery' on the subject in my post. I think Koan tried to make this bigger than it is, but I was having nothing to do with it. I tried to explain, its a different piont of view that Im not interested in discussing. That was not intended to be a eruropean slam in any way. Becasue of the way Europeans tend to discuss politics as I experienced on this board, when i see the threads dive into american cirticism and the joking inundo that goes with it IM not gonna stay for it, if it ends up being prevalent like it has been lately then you wont see much of me. I think Im being pretty simple about it, when the slammin starts Im leavin...

Shall I give my point of view? All the way through 2005 I was mocked and derided on ForumGarden. Do you remember those days? I remember those days. I recall the derision, the impossibility of getting my ideas represented without being thumped to kingdom come by everyone and his dog. Then what do you suppose happened? 2006 arrived. All the way through 2006 I was mocked and derided. A pattern was forming. Never mind, I thought, it'll get better. 2007 arrived and I spent the entire year - you'll never guess - mocked and derided except this time there had been the mother of all power struggles to introduce fair play for minority views. It took until late summer to bury the bodies.

Do you hear that wooshy noise? That's a whole stack of pigeons coming home to roost.

Nothing would please me more than to discuss the state of the world without a raised voice from one end of the thread to the other. It's my ideal. It's what I aim for. I've slapped oscar and fuzzy seven ways to Wednesday for their lack of politeness earlier in this thread, they were both disgusting and what's more they know it. The one thing to do when you finally have the balance of the argument is not to crow.

FG used to be an predominatly american board with an international group visiting, now its a predominatly european board with some visiting americans.

The EU ideology is social-liberal in nature (according to the liberal ideology of the US-GMC-that was for you).

When political discussions come to the for front, the EU ideology is the main thought on the board, only a few americans here are willing to fight it out, and its a losing battle. There is just too many of the EU types visiting the political threads and oscar is right, americans for the most part stay out of British discussions- why bother we dont live there is most americans thought, I think.

The latest breaking news is ALL politics, this board discusses that with an intense british-EU mentality.

Either that or its fluff that, pretty much every body plays in.

Nothing wrong with fluff, but the strong EU-Brit discussions I don't agree with, and you can say what you want in them, but, were just passed off as 'americans'.

Yeah- Shel, Im lookin for a new home.

Just want to say one thing - most British people don't consider themselves to be European, in fact that's a bit of an insult to the few of us that are patriotic!!:sneaky:

First and foremost I'm English/British, we are quite different to our continental neighbours in good and (possibly but I'm not entirely convinced) bad ways.

Oh, and anyone is quite welcome to mock/criticise/deride Britain but we usually go first!! :D;)
