a new much more energy efficient bulb is to be used instead

yaaaay i hear you cry but not quite

for the spent new bulbs contain Mercury and are not only a health hazard if smashed but must be taken to a special recycling place and put in a special container

and so if you don't live near the dump how are you gonna get it there ????

i'll tell you how by getting in your car and driving there using a hundred more times the energy that the old bulb would of used thats blinking how:-5:-5:-5

you really cant make these things up can you :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Sounds like a good plan to me. It's all about waste isn't it?:-3:-3:thinking::wah:

There's two types of replacement for low efficiency incandescents. The compact fluorescents which have the problems you mention are a stop-gap. Within ten years they'll be replaced in turn by higher-efficiency LED lighting, your dimmer will be able to tune every colour of the rainbow as well as brightness and there'll finally be no bloody flicker. Not before time - light bulbs have been flickering ever since AC mains electricity was invented, the fluorescents just made it rather more blatant.

I've heard this too. I'm not sure if they'll do it here in the States, but I don't want mercury to get into my house...it is a health hazard.

Oh no! Do you think Freddie is hiding in the bulbs just waiting for the chance to give us aids?

My BIL has aids and is really starting to go downhill. He acts just like a girl and I don't like him very much. He perfectly matches the stereotype of gays. :lips::lips:

Yeah, isn't that when the Mayans or whoever predicted the end of civilization as we know it? 12/12/2012, right?

Not sure how I feel about that one. Apparently their calendar was able to predict tons of stuff accurately.

Not so specific, I know. Wouldn't History Channel loooovve to hire me.

Can't remember the last time I had a bulb 'blow' so won't be making that journey to the tip too often hopefully. I'm sure that there's a bigger problem with batteries.........imagine how many of them get thrown in the waste........

I'd heard of that a while ago. We have a few that we received free from the grocery store but we haven't used them.

I think this was on the History Channel...interesting, but not specific enough to rely on.

It came with all sorts of predictions. It was on the History Channel I believe, I saw it too, but it's been awhile and I try not to retain info like that for too long. :wah: They also said this calendar was more accurate than anything we have today. I do remember the prediction of the end of the Earth as we know it too, but don't recall any of the others.

I'm not sure what accuracy of a calendar means. What's an accurate calendar? You can't just mean counting time, we can predict the time of the start of a lunar eclipse a million years from now[1] to the nearest minute and feel confident it will turn out right. I don't think the Mayans ever thought of measuring something so small as a minute.

I didn't ask what information it had, just what sort of information it had. What categories. Types of information. Are we talking Nostradamus-like foreknowledge of world events? Weather predictions? An awareness of future eclipses?

[1] That's a slightly circular comment, because the year's defined nowadays by where the Earth and Sun are each year and the calendar gets adjusted by leap seconds to keep them in step so being right isn't quite as clever as it looks - we cheat.

Now spot, didn't I tell you I didn't retain a lot of info? :yh_rotfl Maybe it is a time piece/calendar....It prodicted weather events, lunar stuff and a bunch of stuff like that. That's about the extent of my knowledge on it. Now quit getting all technical on me...it's too close to Christmas for that! :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
