Excuse me but that's not quite right.
What he said was that we need to learn from the period in the early thirties when Germany tried to buy its way out of the Depression by printing money - that's hardly likening Gordon Brown's government to the Nazis in the way you're implying.

My apologie's bryn, i rushed through the article.
I do however just believe that religion is religion and politics is politics. Both bodie's have their experts and should stick to what they are best at. I feel uncomfortable when the Archbishop tends to delve into what the government should or should not do and vice versa.

To me it's a fair warning - print money without the means to back it up and inflation become rampant as the notes are recognised for the scrap paper they are.

I agree with a lot he says but do you think that it's right for a man of religion to comment on government policy and vice versa?

Yes - he is of this world however much he claims otherwise and he needs to observe the state of the country to do his job. Why should he not comment on what he sees?

To be honest, i'm not sure why i have a problem with him commenting on government policy. I put the thread on hoping to see a few other opinions. I suppose i just see the two jobs as entirely different. Why, I'm not sure.

I'm an Anglican, and technically anyway, the Archbishop of Canterbury is head of the world Anglican church. I have always thought he is an utter twit.

He has had the unfortunate knack of cheesing people off by making some controversial comments in the past. Some view it as meddling. I just think he should stick to the church and not try to play the politician. We have elected idiots to give opinions in parliment for us.
I understand that he is just making an observation but it would be the same if the government were to meddle in the church. I just don't think the two go together.

I think that the parallels are unfortunate in that of course I don't in any way equate the British Labour Party of 2008 or any other mainstream British Party to the German Nazi Party of 1931. Thats insulting to the Labour Party and also to the victims of the actual Nazi Party, which shouldn't be used in some sort of false relative analogy (as they so often are).
However, he does make an interesting and valid point in that: when ideology and principal overcomes basic decency, humanity, and needs of ordinary people (partiularly the weakest) then you generally do end up on a slippery slope. Its a shame that such ideas were not brought to the fore many years ago, as what is happening now is the culmination of ideas that were introduced decades past.
Thats twice in a month I have agreed (on some level) with the Archbishop of Canterbury.
How odd.
