It goes beyond a cottage industry when some outfit goes to the trouble of setting their own ATMs up and making them work like a normal one! You'd think the banking profession would shut that sort of enterprise down rather quickly.

I hope you get re-credited with as little of a fight as possible.

Sorry to hear that Scrat, you try and have a happy christmas anyway, I am sure they can recompense you for the money once you get in contact with them. :-6

That's really bad news, Scrat. Hope you get things resolved soon.

I've been close to this happening myself with a credit card but fortunately the credit card company spotted an anomoly and closed the card account (before I knew anything about it).

Despite all the warnings, we're all vulnerable. It gets me that salespeople get irate with me when I refuse to give out my details over the phone.

I know there's some ********** theif in Sophia Bulgaria having the time of their misbegotten life!! I was just doing my bills and low and behold my checking account was in the red. Seems that someone withdrew over $2000 in six transactions from various different ATMs. All over the weekend.

I have killed the ATM card. I know where they got the information too. When I was in Smolensk with my wife a few weeks ago, I used the ATM card at one of those stand alone ATMs, not a regular bank ATM. That's where they got the info. Account # pin, everything they needed.

This may yet solve itself. With luck. Man am I pissed.

OMG.....this happens to me every 8 months, with my insta card, but on any day, only 500.00 is allowed to be withdrawn...I have set it up that way, maximum per day is 500.00.

-As soon as this happens, my bank contacts me immediately as they know its an unusual amount, they have tracking devices and whenever something unusual happens they contact me, even with my major credit card.

I spent 2 hours in a store shopping, only to cash out and find out my card was frozen!:-5:-5

I had no other way for paying for it, so I had to leave the store empty handed! Came home and called the bank, they had frozen it because of the 500.00 withdrawal.....as it was not mine, they issued me a new card and refunded my money into my savings account....two weeks later after a full investigation.

Yes, I was pissed! This has now happened 4 times, and I hide my number when using an instacard machine!:-5:-5

Ughhh I'm so sorry Scrat. It sucks when that happens. I had my ID stolen a few years ago, and it was a pain in the arse to take care of.

Contact the police immediately to file a complaint, and your bank. You'll also have to contact the police in the town that charges were made.

Those places are secure, more often than not you have to swipe your card to get into the room to use the machine. It's pretty easy to add the necessary hardware to a privately owned machine. I remember it was a Diebold, an older one with the green letters.

Maybe it's just a fluke, I am pretty pissed that the bank never said or did a damn thing to stop it. I never use my ATM checking account like that. I even got some overdraft fees.

your bank should definitely have notified you of any suspicious behavior no matter where you use an ATM.......

You should seriously think about changing bank institutions, plus every bank is liable to pay you the theft money back.

luckily here we have a bank called Presidents Choice, they have absolutely no fees whatsoever at anytime, they also supply our cheques, they are duplicates, one for our own copy......no statements being mailed each month, hence no charges or fees for that..........

That's terrible, Scrat. I wish you all the best in getting this insane situation fixed!! I can definitely relate. I've had to do the same before.

I agree with Odie. Why didn't the bank notify you??

Anyway, good luck. I hope it gets resolved by New Year. Or, at least is in the works of being resolved.

Scrat is a world traveler - in several countries - nothing suspicious on his account .

I'm sure Scrat will be reimbursed and in time will be cleared up.

The only way to maintain calm over this situation - it could've been worse.

Sorry Scrat - I hate this . I hate Takers

it'll work out ..

I have never been to Bulgaria in my life and was only in Russia and Warsaw. It now occures to me that it could have happened in Warsaw too, we were there for 6 days and I used it twice. That machine in Smolensk keeps coming up though.

I talked to a guy with the bank security and he says what they do is collect the info when you run the card with a recording device attached to the machine, and then put all of it on a disc. They then sell the disc and info to somenone else who makes a fake card with your info on it and take money from the account.

It usually has to be done a quickly as possible but considering the time frame he says the info was moved from farther than Poland. He also says it's not the companies that own the machine, it's the people that work on the machines.

He says that major banks are 99.9999% safe, it doesn't matter where they are for the most part. It's the smaller ATM companies that are not part of major banks that are the problem. Avoid them at all cost when traveling.

I remember the machine in Smolensk was an older model sitting in a market not far from the trainstation.

sure makes you wonder doesn't it!

hope you don't have to go through that again.

has your bank deposited back your funds yet?

These cards drive me nuts, they need to be designed differently, this is my fourth time now that someone has happened to me, its irritating, frustrating and really pisses me off that it can happen that often when I am so careful not to let anyone see my pin!

My husband has had it done twice!

Doing Christmas shopping in a store for 2 hours, being cashed out and not being able to take my items with me was just nerve racking!:-5:-5:-5

So sorry Scrat...do they have video where the withdrawls were made? I hope you get your money back quickly and that they remove all your overdraft fees.

At least they caught it early Odie, just think of how much they could have taken out if the bank didn't catch it when they did.

When I take money out of an ATM, I only do it at my bank...I won't go anywhere else.

our bank is great....plus we are only aloud to withdraw 500.00 per day, so that was the most he/she could have taken out, plus our bank knows if something looks suspicious and calls us asap to verify.

they know our routines, and we have never taken out even close to that amount.

its all done automatically and on our credit cards as well.

At least you got yourself, the dogs, and the car home in one piece. That's the main thing. Nothing worse than breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Especially on Christmas Day. Wooo.

Sounds like a good bank to stick with. Can't the bank, or the police, tell you if they ever caught who was behind the thefts?
