Oh KE, the last two nights I have had nothing but nightmares.

On boxing day I brought my family out for a short spin on the boat, the intention was to stay in the marina where it was safe as the sea was rough, before I knew it I was at the point of no return and the only way to turn the boat around was by going out of the marina to the sea and come back in.

I should never have gotten to the point in the first place, but I was talking and not paying full attention.

Outside the marina the waves were as high a 3 metres, coming back in I was broadsided by a wave, the boat went at least 80 degree pitch. I thought we were capsizing, it was a miracle we didn’t. My eldest daughter was holding my 4 year old, the look of fear in her eyes I will not soon forget. My other daughter just hit the floor for safety. My wife was freaking out.

Thankfully I got control of the boat and got back into the marina, but I was as white as a ghost and shaking. What was meant to be a fun short spin, turned into a near disaster, and I put them in harms way with one bad decision.

I will never again take the boat out on the spur of the moment, it was against everything I know. It was a big lesson learned the hard way, but thankfully with no casualties.

The last two nights I have been waking up with nightmares of the boat capsizing into that cold Irish . How would I have gotten my wife and kids to safety if that happened?

Thankfully I live to regret it, it won’t happen again.

Ah Mikeine.. That brought back some memories. My dad took me out in a rowboat when I was about 10 and we were fishing and not noticing the sea kind of getting rough. We started to ship water and he got me bailing while he got seriously rowing, and he was sweating it. We did make it to shore, but he told me years later he'd had the fright of his life, on my account. Grin.

G'day Jimbo... nice to see you, and Odie, Duckie and Cars !!!!!!!!!!!!!! You all send me smiling into the new day. Thank you. :-6

Lazy Sunday here, snow still falls, and that takes us up to about 12 inches worth over the past couple weeks. Awww the joys of the northwest corner or the planet.

Thanks, Minks. How the heck are you? Haven't seen you for a while! And ya got snow. It's hot here. Would you like about 20 degrees? I'll fax them over.

I'm going to seek out some snow in late January. Strap some bits of wood to me feet and go slip sliding away, as one does. :D

I've got the flour and the semolina and the almond meal. Have to go out to the shops later (er store) and get some butter. I wonder if this butter should be refrigerated or not???

I was just stirring - remembering one of my favourite FG threads ... ahhhh nostalgia!!

By the way, when I was out in the country on Christmas Day, I saw kids playing in the side streets on home made billycarts, or sitting on the front porches of houses in the shade with marbles .. kind of wonderful nostalgia trip back to the times before computer games, fast food etc..

Oh Mike:(

Your story gave me the chills. I'm so glad you and family are ok. What a fright you must have had...I can't even imagine. Geeze, how are you and family feeling now....have you gotten over the shock a bit:(

I love the sea, but I also fear and respect it at the same time. I always remember to think.....the ocean is not your friend.......and try to be careful.

But, there are rip tides that pull a lot of people out to sea....it's usually the visitors from inland or foreign countries who don't heed the warnings and have died. Last year we had 3 people pulled out and never found again.

All my thoughts are with you and family Mike....sincerely hoping you all feel a bit better.

Wow mike, glad the ride did not end in disaster! We do learn our lessons the hard way don't we?

Many years ago, my dad & I bought a 21ft "wooden boat" with an "inboard engine", that was about a dozen years old!

It was in a marina about 10 miles from my dad's waterfront home, that had a floating dock. (he just bought the house with dock, so of course he needed a boat to tie upto that dock) Neither of us knew the first thing about boating, but the guy at the marina said it's easy to get to your inlet, and gave us a few simple sounding directions. So foolish us fired up that sucker, & off we went!!! About half way to our destination, low & behold, putt putt, shudder shudder, the engine quits!!! We were only about a half mile from shore, and as we drifted closer to the shore, we saw jaggaed rocks all over the place sticking out of the water! We panicked, and started to look for the life preservers, guess what, there were'nt any! So then we looked for the anchor, luckily for us there was one! So we dropped anchor, and started to look at the engine problem. A fan belt snapped, and of course there was no spare. So we sat there anchored for over an hour, when finally some kindly old boater came along, we told him our story, he laughed a little, & then threw us a tow line & towed us to my dad's dock! We wanted to reward him, but he said that was not necessary, but that was part of the rules on the water. And if we ever saw someone on the water in distress for us to do the same for them. Anyway, we then smartened up, and took some Coast Guard boating classes. Over the years we helped at least 6 or 7 people with boating breakdowns. It did feel good helping them, as we knew first hand how trematic a boating breakdown could be.

Luckily for us, our disaster turned out not to end too bad.
