There are a lot of people in Sydney right now. In addition to those of us who live here. In fact, it's sort of interesting when you run into someone actually talking with an Oz accent. I did travel to Manly on the ferry today with an English speaker thought. A very fine lady from Pennsylvania who was in town just for the day, having sailed in yesterday morning in the Holland America line cruiseship 'Volendam'. Seemingly recovered from last night's NYE fireworks, she was using her time very wisely to check out the beach!! On my way back this evening my ferry passed the Volendam sailing out.. wonder if she made it back on board, or if she is now doomed forever to bathe in the warm waters of Manly or sprawl comfortably forever on warm yellow sand.

It's Twelfth Night here, or at least it will be when it's dark. This means the end of Christmas and time to take down the decorations. Lots of other significances too of course.

Especially in cold climates, where it's dark early, Odie - I'd leave the lights on as long as possible too. Here, we are in mid summer and it doesn't get dark till 9pm. The centrepiece of the Sydney Harbour Bridge new year decoration still lights up each evening. That's neat. It's a changing disk, sometimes looking like leaves, sometimes stars, sometimes a glowing planet. My Christmas tree still smells wonderful, so I might leave it. Did take down the cards though. I made a cheese and leek pie yesterday to finish the Christmas ham. The fridge is now again empty. Shopping day tomorrow. Grin.

Nar, not this year. I usually go to Colorado, but all the prices have skyrocketed beyond what I reckon's a fair thing. I'm going to Japan.

Hakuba. Sydney to Narita then the train to Tokyo, train to Nagano, bus to Hakuba. I've been to Japan before, but not to ski. Should be quite an adventure. I have a bit of Japanese, but am hopeless at reading kanji :sneaky:

I appreciate your kind comments. Can't put my finger on exactly what has changed for me - that is so different this time... from all the other times we've all gone up, down, sideways. Anyway, at very least, a bit of time out can't hurt.

Sort of mid season, Odie. When I was in Canberra last weekend, the trees were turning. Fall is coming. In Sydney, of course, we really only have two seasons each year, but it's a bit cooler now. Warm in a nice way. I know a lot of you guys have snow - and will consider anything near 30 degrees Celsius as really hot. But it's been over 40 here, so high twenties is wonderful coolth.
I've just got back from my monthly book club. We read Listen by Kate Veitch, published in America under the title of ' Without a Backward Glance". Very interesting session - and the author was with us. So interesting.

Morning Odie, Duckie, Kathy ... thinking of deserts, the possibility of flowering deserts, snow and bushfires.. I just had to look up Robert Frost's poem - which has nothing to do with any of the foregoing, but is a fine poem.
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Hi Odie - I'd forgotten this place existed. Awesome!! Don't know about cleaning it up - I kind of like cobwebs. As long as there arent' spiders still in residence of course.
Slight tangent here... but did you get to see the movie 'Twilight'? Romy is swooning over Edward, and devouring the books in the series.
