France sending frigate to stem arms to Gaza

PARIS (AP) — French President Nicolas Sarkozy is ordering that a frigate be immediately deployed off Gaza to survey the area and fight arms smuggling and consolidate a fragile cease-fire.

A statement by Sarkozy's office said he is asking that a helicopter-carrier be sent to international waters off Gaza "in full cooperation with Egypt and Israel."

He ordered Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner to immediately "coordinate closely" with the United States and Europe to propose other ways to fight arms smuggling on land and at sea.

Nah, its just the French starting to reassert themselves in the Meditterranian (sic), given the power vacuum there. Also, its only one Frigate, hardly an armada.

Though the French and the British are commissioning a new class of Aircraft carrier, and will run joint fleet operations in the next decade, probably moving back into the med to control those waters again, once the yanks decide they are not bothered anymore.
