Listening....

I love my music.

Ive had a nice pair of speakers (B&W's) for some time but an only adequate receiver. Ok but missing something.

I broke down and bought a new receiver and Im blown away by what my speakers can do now. I had no way of realizing the gaps in sound I was missing with the old receiver.

My musical interests run the gamut but I think Motown is at the base of what Im listening to.

Motown and Chess Records put out some incredible talents but it all kind of transcends into other sounds. Its not that far fom Smokey Robinson to Bob Marley. Or Sam Cooke to the Neville Brothers. Its an easy transition to make from Motown to many other avenues.

Anyway Im spending hours listeng in a way I never have before and Im searching for music Im unfamiliar with to get a full well rounded musical experience.

If Im playing Diana Krall the clean crisp notes of the keys on the piano and the utter clarity of her voice fills the room and if I close my eyes shes in the room.

The bass output is set so I only hear what was laid down on the track, I dont want embellishment or fabricated sound fields. I want to hear the distinct purity of each note, each sparkle of the cymbal.

Horns on these speakers produce some of the truest sound Ive ever heard. I went and bought a Miles Davis cd today just so I know what its about. Im not crazy about the cd musically but I can listen just to absorb this array of instruments that seamlessly permeate my surroundings.

Im eager to find more music Im unaware of so I can visit this place of magic often.

If you like sax Nomad, you might try Earl Bostic. He was big in rythmn and blues in the 50's and his big ole sax will give your speakers a work out.

On a cooler and smoother tone, but still sax--------check out anything by Stan Getz--------he's from the cooooool jazz era but different than Miles.

Thanks and I love sax. Ill write it down. I have oodles of smooth jazz and I think Im tiring of it somewhat.

I recently purchased a Ginger Baker (from Cream) Trio cd and he went into a classical jazz direction that I like. Full of punch and squealing horns coupled with his elegant guitar playing and perfectly rounded out drum variations.

For the pure pleasure of trying to keep up Pat Metheny is an interesting musician.

Can you recommend any really "big" orchestral selections ?

By big I mean tympany and bold robust outbursts of full sound ?

Ah................another smooth jazz fan. High five, Nomad!......Waymon Tisdale, Paul Hardcastle, Euge Groove, Nils, Peter White, etc.

The Temptations are one of my fave Motown groups.

Hey Nomad, have you heard of a band called 'Sky' ? They were big in the 70's/80's Their leader was John Williams (UK), a brilliant classical guitarist who ventured into non-classical music (sort of) by forming a band called Sky - brilliant! They played all sorts of music, but probably their most famous piece was 'Toccata'. If you haven't heard them (I don't think they are together any more - gone their separate ways), give them a listen. I'll put a couple of links here for you to try.............

Motown my era some of the best music every made. I'm with Lon on this "Stan Kenton" excellent sound. John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Boz Scaggs, Charles Mingus to name a few.

I know of Coltrane but I dont know his music, hes a jazz pianist ?

Mingus Im only familiar with because Joni Mitchell went through a Mingus phase and dedicated an album to his music or influence.

Boz Scaggs I recently rediscovered. Id only been familiar with pop tunes from the 70,s but the guy can light up a guitar and his voice is uniquely amazing.

As I said the smooth jazz has kind of worn thin on me. Clear Channel which has a monopoly on American radio stations stick to a format that I cant tolerate any longer.

I will check out Sky gill thanks.

Al DiMeola is a master guitarist, Herbie Hancock has an album from a few years back called Dis Is Da Drum, heavy African influence flavored with urban contemporary.

Im not a purist by any means meaning Im not pigeon holed, I want to experience everything.

Weather Report and Chick Corea are too manic for me.

Interner radio is a great path to an introduction to unfamiliar music.

Pick a genre and keep it on in the background and when you hear something that grabs you check the artist and album currently playing.

Im also extremely enthralled with Middle Eastern music, its mysterious and mesmerizing.

If your looking for a Women Jazz singer the early songs by 'NANCY WILSON" are exceptional. I have many of her early albums beautiful voice. :-6

I am familiar with Nancy Wilson and yes I love female vocalists.

Some of the older cd's that havent been digitally remastered can be hard to listen to but I realize others will never give up their scratched vinyl.

Speaking of a silky performance I cant help it but Michael Buble is one smooth cat.

She is at the top of my playlist just an amazing voice. Your right she doesn't put on many song as of late. Her "Best of Sage" is very good.

Thanks Nomie I have alway felt music in my soul. I was a pretty good dancer back in the day. I have been teaching my Nieces and Granddaugter the swing, the stroll dances of the past, also how to really dance to a slow song. :yh_rotfl

Yup thats normal. I saw her one evening in a park with the Gulf of Mexico washing its waves ashore a few feet away. My mind actually started on fire.
