I'm so glad I got in when I did, we've had an hours worth of snow since arriving home. Cars are barely making it up the hill now, I'm watching them slide back down again from my bedroom window. It has stopped snowing, and the last lot that came down was quite sleety so the road is now an ice rink. I don't think I will be making it down the road again tomorrow morning at half seven even if there is no more snow. As I type a van is trying to get up the road to my street, I've just witnessed him slide back down and narrowly miss a garage, at least he's admitted defeat and abandoned the van and walked home now!
My word its chaos out there, it's a giant car park, no one can move :-3

I feel your pain. The pics on the telly show us what you are experiencing.
I think I'm becoming immune to the hassle this white stuff causes. It's been a bitter cold winter here and really, really cold.................

I wouldn't mind a snow day, we haven't had one in so long, I could do with a good snowball fight!
LOL, you can have a mountain or two of ours. We have had all our snowplows out since the beginning of December and it is a continual process.
It's warming up here on the Canadian prairies a bit though, only -17 out and not much of a wind chill, people are taking off their hats and mitts.
Do you get weather 'wind chill' warnings in Ireland?

Gary Gritter has just been up the hill so traffic is once more moving, not into the street I live in though.
Might have been nice to have been snowed in in London, I would have been forced to stay up there, and legitimately have been able to just 'sit still' for more than five mins!
Unless it snows again tonight this lot here will be gone by morning, the worrying thing is the ice thats going to be left behind.... not sure I want to even think about getting the kids up early and out so I can be at uni for 9am for a lecture :-3

Gee Odie, you know our Vancouver BC is much the same way. When I moved there from Wpg a while back I was truly astounded at their lack of winter driving. They get some snow (that very quickly turns slushy) and the incompetence in driving skills and the whining was unbelievable. I don't know much, next to nothing really, about UK weather, but if they are comparable to our Vancouver then I truly feel sorry for them.

Don't your people keep emergency supply kits for each season in their vehicles? At the change of each season my emergency kit would change and be refreshed. For winter there was always extra blankets, candles, and food that could be eaten cold, shovel and box of sand to place under the wheels in case I got stuck.
Even now, in my apartment I have extra supplies in case of power or water failure from the winter weather. If power goes out I have my huge candles and lots of tinned food (and fresh water in the freezer). Basically, I'm good for about a week.

Make no mistake Carolly, unless the temp is +10 or more F a 'little snow' can be a very dangerous thing. The normal setting on an indoor freezer is approx zero F, (according to my freezer manual that I have just checked). For snow and ice to stay for any length of time the temp has to be at freezing point. Now I don't know what your temp is there but there has been some talk about the snow turning to ice. A body can freeze the same way a chicken or roast can, and as you are aware it doesn't take a whole lot of time to freeze a chicken.
For you guys over there the problems can come into play when a car stalls or gets stuck and someone decides to 'start walking'. No, they prob won't freeze solid in your warmer climate but skin can and will freeze with exposure. We have many immigrants that come to Manitoba completely unaware of how dangerous the cold weather can be. I've seen many individuals with black patches all over their face and hands from frostbite. These scars don't go away quickly if they ever do. I've seen more than enough people minus fingers also because of freezing. Therein lies the problem with the weather you are all having right now. since you don't have this kind of weather on a permanent bases you aren't aware of the dangers of it.
Well now that I've informed you, LOL, make yourself some tea and cookies, grab a good book and keep an eye on the weather station.

Odie, Amber: Here in the South these days we get conditions like this every 20 years or so, so by and large people aren't prepared for it. I'm surprised Cornwall County Council has any snowploughs because it has the mildest climate in England - subtropical plants grow well there.
I am irritated when we get a dusting of snow and things grind to a halt, but this, by the standards of today, is freakish weather so I'm inclined to be a bit more generous.

like because of the wind.
Hi Chezzie, here in Manitoba we call that 'wind chill'. Believe it or not it can be more dangerous than the standing temp. Here on the prairies it's the wind chill that everyone is most concerned about because it is measured by how cold the air actually is and not by what the temp is away from the wind. For example the standing temp may be zero F, but the wind-chill can actually make it -30 F.
LOL, I hope I explained this correctly. I guess because I live where do I am more aware of temps than you guys over there in your nice warm climate. Anytime anyone wants to deport me to the UK I'll just grab my sunglasses and bathing suit and be ready to go, LOL. A few weeks ago in the middle of the 'deep freeze' with the wind chill Winnipeg hit -56. At this point F and C are about the same thing.

I am irritated when we get a dusting of snow and things grind to a halt, but this, by the standards of today, is freakish weather so I'm inclined to be a bit more generous.
LOL, clodhopper, I decided to look in my big atlas and find Cornwall and decided to forget it when I looked at the map. I was once told that all of England and Scotland would fit into Manitoba and we would still have lots of space left over. Just looking at how crowded the map of the UK is I can believe that.
I'm having a hard enough time just trying to understand a lot of your slang language, and when you're all joking or just fooling around. Now looking at the map I know I won't ever remember it.
I agree that the weather if freakish all over the place. You can be happy you only have an issue with it every 20 years or so.

Amber: I'm certainly aware of windchill and the weather forecasters mention it too. Given the dampness of our climate and my hillwaking hobby it can be an issue even in summer when you gain a thousand feet or so. I've known people from Eastern Europe, who are used to dry cold something like yours, be caught out when the temperature is just above freezing and a wet wind is blowing.

Well now that I've informed you, LOL, make yourself some tea and cookies, grab a good book and keep an eye on the weather station.Good post Amber;)
Ive worked the markets and still do but made a promise to myself this year that the really cold days are a no no now.I have been so cold at times it has been painful and being out in it from 5am till late is hard in the Winter.I have worn 2 hats at a time...two pairs of trousers....3 jumpers and Boots especially made for the snow and I have looked like something from another planet and still been so cold.My hands and face seem to cause me the most problems.....and my face to many others also:yh_rotfl. I do the coast and it always seems colder there.Cold can kill and because of our heating prices at the moment it is worrying for some I am sure.Anyway Ive taken your advice and taken a cup of tea but no cookies as im trying to get healthy............can see me mates laughing from here at that remark:yh_rotfl:D;)

Gary Gritter is doing a fantastic job! Although we have not had tonnes of snow (yet), as you guys have, the main roads are clear. Rural spots are cut off down here, I made it to Falmouth Uni this morning (apart from a scary few seconds when another motorist driving like the clappers and on my side of the road caused me to slam on the anchors only to realise I was on ice and skidding towards a wall :-5 ) The problem here overnight is going to be the bit of snow thats left freezing, so I have decided we are having a snow day tomorrow, its just not worth attempting trying to turn the car around here on very steep and untreated roads, let alone then spending an hour driving to uni.

Thanks for answering clodhopper, I'm happy to hear that you are all aware of wind-chill. But are you aware of it because of your climbing or are wind chill factors part of your daily weather reports in winter for the UK?

Betty:Glad you (just!) got home after your dreadful journey before this really got going. Think you're quite right to be cautious tomorrow.
Up here it's been thawing since about 3pm, but is due to get to -3 centigrade tonight so it's going to be like an ice rink outside tomorrow - until it starts thawing again.
tbh, I'm at least as concerned about the flooding that will follow this as I am about the ice.

Amber: The forecasters mention it occasionally. Sometimes mentioning windchill directly, sometimes just saying something like, "...and that wind will make it feel much colder."

Make your own cookies Carolly. I do my own baking and make it nutritious,( LOL, so I can justify eating extra.)
Well I hate to say this to you but I am glad that you are all aware of cold, snow and freezing. May I suggest something Carolly? When you know that you are in for a very cold day at the market, make yourself a thermos of hot ginger tea. Use fresh ginger and scrape some into the pot and then pour boiling water over it. Add some fresh unpasteurized honey to sweeten it. Fresh ground ginger opens the capillaries in the body and keeps the blood running warm to fingers and toes etc. Don't put the honey in until the water is only luke warm, then stir it in. Honey will not only provide you with the added energy that you lose while being out in the cold but is also anti-viral and anti-bacterial. But LOL, working in a market you are prob aware of this.

Carrolly: laughs - one of the coldest jobs I had was umpiring cricket matches in April when I was a teacher: Stand absolutely still and concentrate for five minutes, then walk 10 yards, stand still and concentrate for five minutes for about four hours. No matter how many layers you put on that wind seemed to just cut straight through them. So I sympathise with your plight. Handwarmers helped, but nothing seemed to stop your feet from turning into blocks of ice.:wah:

It's warming up here on the Canadian prairies a bit though, only -17 out and not much of a wind chill, people are taking off their hats and mitts.
Do you get weather 'wind chill' warnings in Ireland?
Yes, we don't get heavy snow much any more, but we have had a decent fall today, not as much as SE England which seems to have been a bit overwhelmed by the heavy snow showers.
We are expecting much heavier falls ourselves in Ireland tonight, sure we'll see, either way it will be grand, just a day or two of disruption I think, we aren't very good with dealing with heavy snow over here. We don't get enough of it, so we always seem to be surprised by it when it does happen.
Rain on the other hand, is an entirely different matter.

Excuse me while I laugh. I've just had a look at the Beeb weather reports. It seems that the London "area" got 28cm of snow, yet all the pictures they showed - admittedly, of central London - gave the impression that they had a whole inch of the stuff. The buses didn't run at all, but what really confuses me is that the Tube didn't run either.
Subterranean snow?
