I'm not sure I'd take kindly to being told how many children I can have. I have two now and not sure that I'd have anymore now anyway, getting a bit old now :wah:

How would they implement such a thing, children would end up being killed because they are deemed the wrong sex of their choice, they'd want another go to get the right sex!

Blimey, the consequences of this are actually quite horrific.

Going to happen sooner than later. Simple fact there is not much room left on Mother Earth or resources to take care of us in our selfish, indulgent me, me, me, I can do what I want, when I want life styles. To many of us now I see nothing wrong with controlling family size should have been done long ago. I won't be around to see what happens if we DON'T start controlling the population but most of you will and it won't be pretty.

Most responsible people already limit their children to what they can afford.

It is only those whose welfare checks increase with the number of dependants they have that keep pushing them out.

These welfare people are also the ones that you see on the telly yelling about how they do not receive enough help for their 6 kids. Sterilization has been suggested for the people who keep reproducing while on the dole, but they yell even louder that we cannot deny them their right to have children. No where in this yelling is any acknowledgment that they have any responsibility to care for what they produce.

This is sheer uninformed fascist bigotry. It most certainly isn't "only those whose welfare checks increase with the number of dependants they have that keep pushing them out" and you haven't the slightest factual basis for alleging it. How on earth is anyone to have a sensible discussion about anything with half-baked rubbish like that being thrown into a thread?

Here you are - Mr and Mrs Duggar, capitalist to the core, self-sufficient, no welfare check in their lives, eighteen children and proud of it. Former state legislators who served in the Arkansas House of Representatives don't get welfare checks, they just breed up more Republicans. You doubt the reason? Go and check Quiverfull. Welfare checks? If you think it's down to welfare checks then for goodness sake bring some evidence here and show you've a rational reason for thinking it.

Of course it isn't. That is why I bolded and underlined a word in my first sentence (see below), hopefully, to stave off just such a response as you just made.

I don't think i would take to kindly to someone telling my how many children i can have, i always said i would love a house full but that wasn't meant to be, but i think i'm a responsible enough person to know what would be enough without the government having to tell me!

we would probably have had 2 if we could have. :D

That's good. Now try to justify "It is only those whose welfare checks increase with the number of dependants they have that keep pushing them out" for us. If you think it's down to welfare checks then for goodness sake bring some evidence here and show you've a rational reason for thinking it.

This is a discussion, not a debate. Folks are allowed to state their views and opinions without notations or footnotes for anyone else. The OP is asking for the posters thoughts, not their thought process.

Now, having said that...

Kindle

I was one of seven children, of two working well -to -do parents... until they split up. Then my mother took on three jobs and we still lived in housing and when she couldn't avoid it, used the food stamp system. We cannot know what we can afford to raise tomorrow, based on what we may be able to afford today, can we?

My objection to todays system, is that I think kids should have to stay in their family home. This notion that if a girl gets knocked up, she's entitled to housing, medical, food - at my expense.... that's crap, IMO.

I don't know how it works every where else, but here in Illinois, in my county, mothers are expected to work a set number of hours to get their benefits, once the child reaches a certain age. Guess what the girls are doing to get around that... having another.

The local daycare set up a 1/2 hour after clock out for these mothers who qualify for free care to pick up their kids, because they were dropping them off all day. You should have heard the stink raised.

Everyone today appears to feel entitled and no one seems to feel the shame that we felt having to use the system. But there are folks who don't want to ride the system of freebies, they are out there.... you just don't see them or hear them as they are working to get out of the system the same as my family did.
I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

Folks who'd like to copy my intellectual work should expect to pay me for it.:-6

Its true about one thing,, u may think u can afford children at one point and nobody knows how long a relationship will last these days and parents could end up splitting up.

It is a shame that some kids today think theres no future for them so they go and have children instead of waiting to be married or in a long term relationship.

ie kids having kids.

That just leaves us with the sheer uninformed fascist bigotry bit then, doesn't it. Calling it "views and opinions" doesn't take out the stain.

It's true what you are saying. One never knows what the future holds. Our youngest daughter found herself alone with a baby and in need of help. We took her, her son and her two dogs in for over a year. We fed, clothe and gave her money for her cigarettes, gas and occassional nights outs with friends. My hubby even gave her a debit card to use so she wouldn't have to always be asking for funds from us for the little necessities.

On her own she sought out state programs which she applied for and received, which paid for her schooling in medical billing, gave her free daycare (limitied only to the times she was actually in school and money for gas to go to school. She cared for her son completely on her own when out of school, did her homework and if she wanted to go out, she asked if we would watch him.

During this time she met and began seeing a nice young man. Their dating mostly consisted of dinner out (with her child) and activities on the weekend, also with her son. She made it clear that she was a package deal: her, her son, and TWO dogs.

Though he wanted to marry her sooner than they did, she felt strongly that she needed to have a job first so that the financial burden of a ready made family did not fall just upon him.

Upon graduation from school, her externship turned into a full time job where she is still employed.

They are currently living in a house they bought, which they did completely on their own dime, without financial assistance from any family, and they have a second son now.

She used what was available to help her get on her own. This is how the system is suppose to work. It is not a way of life.

You also pointed on that different states here have different requirements and offer different help -- I keep forgeting this point as we stress the fact that we are all one.

There is alot of abuse in the welfare system, but it also does alot of good. What good it does is because of the character of the person who solicits that help.

Why does only being allowed one increase the proportion of orphans? How are the proportion of orphans and the number of children in a family linked?

China only allows one child, and the majority of china parents want a boy therefore a lot of girls end up in orphonages.

But it's not supportable by real events in the real world. Opinion can at least be divided into well-founded opinion and prejudice with no basis in fact. The prejudice is the stain.

Families in China want sons as it is the sons that will care for them in their old age. Some families will abandon a daughter so that they can have another child without any penalties.

So they're not actually orphans? They're abandoned children?

I suspect their proportion is extremely small.

It is not small at all. Check the net.

WHILE CHINA HAS 21% OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION, it has only 10% of land suitable for cultivation. More than 160 million people are added to the population every year. In response, the Chinese government has vigorously promoted family planning; in 1979 they announced the controversial 'one child policy,' with rewards and penalties to induce couples to limit their family to one child. For thousands of years, Chinese culture has dictated every family must have a son or risk dishonoring their ancestors; the birth of a boy is celebrated while the birth of a girl is not acknowledged. More than 6 million women in China are called 'Lai-De' or 'Zheo-Di' (both of which mean, 'next time bring a boy'). There are no official statistics for abandoned babies, and abandoning children is a crime that carries stiff penalties. But some parents are willing to take the risk because, if they can only have one child, they don't want it to be a girl. Abandoned children are left to die beside roads, rivers and railway stations; others are picked up by gangs and used for begging. There are some 40,000 orphanages with between 1 and 3 million Chinese orphans; two in five babies entering the system die.

That's from a Theological Seminary? You don't think they're grinding an axe rather than informing?

Even discounting the bias of the report, the abuse of the word "orphan" and the don't-quote-us aspect of "there are no official statistics for abandoned babies", that's exactly the same proportion of children in care as in England.

Thanks Kindle...I hate looking up stats but have seen many specials about this topic. What also stinks in China is that if a child shows an apptitude for a certain sport, they take the child and raise them to be Olympic champions...this can happen as early as 3 or 4 years old. The parents have no say in it, and they are still not allowed to have another child.

But, who gets to decide who is a third world country! We have labeled them 'third world countries' because we don't agree with their cultures.

I could never agree with what you are suggesting, clipped at birth! What gives us the right ??

WHILE CHINA HAS 21% OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION, it has only 10% of land suitable for cultivation. More than 160 million people are added to the population every year. In response, the Chinese government has vigorously promoted family planning

Just to put the figures provided by the Theological Seminary into context, and given 13.71 births/1,000 population in China, either the population of China is currently 11 billion or they have a very poor grasp of English. Do you honestly think there are more than 160 million births in China annually? The figure they give is at least 30% higher than the entire world birth estimate for 2008.

For goodness sake write to your government and tell them to stop sending aid abroad if that's what you think.

How can anyone here be proposing mass compulsory sterilization based on nationality? This is exactly the sort of talk which brought the Third Reich into existence. Have none of you any historical background at all?

they just pop those poor children out.

Definition of the terminology 'Third World Countries'

Third World is a categorical label used to describe states that are considered to be underdeveloped in terms of their economy or level of industrialization, globalization, standard of living, health, education or other criteria for 'advancements'. The name Third World arose during the Cold War to refer to nations that did not belong to the similarly termed "First" or "Second Worlds". There is debate over the appropriateness of the term.

Source: Third World - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Third World is just a term/label that those who consider themselves to somehow be superior have constructed.

It has nothing to with nationality, it has to do with they cannot afford the children they have, but they continue to have more.

This is like trying to grasp water. I said "nationality" because you said "in third world countries....they should be clipped at birth". If you'd not used "in third world countries" I'd have written a different word. I'm holding a conversation, it's continuous but you keep forgetting what you've said, it's like talking to someone brain-damaged who can't retain a thought for longer than ten seconds.

Go on, I'll sit back patiently and you can tell me. In what way does "in third world countries" not call for compulsory mass sterilization on the basis of nationality?

I can only hear what you say, I'm not telepathic. Nothing I wrote was deliberately rude or unkind, I'm merely describing the frustration your switchback statements cause.

I wouldn't dream of disputing it. I wrote a couple of days ago about it being much the same in India too. My very simple question was why these children were being called orphans and you picked up the ball and kicked it out of the park.

Here, let me ask it again - this is all I wrote, it's all I asked, it's a perfectly reasonable query in the context of what I was querying:Why does only being allowed one increase the proportion of orphans? How are the proportion of orphans and the number of children in a family linked?

You can't seriously think anything I wrote here called you brain dead. There are people who can't remember anything for longer than ten seconds and I described them as brain damaged. The way you ignore what you previously wrote and pretend it was something different has exactly that feel to it. Turning my "brain damaged" simile into "brain dead" is just another perfect example of it.
