How are house prices going up by 1.9% a good thing? Everyone (except the developers) was complaining that house prices were way to high and people could not afford them, then they start coming down (which is what we wanted ) and everyone goes into panic mode. Now they are supposedly going up and that is good?

The only people that would be pleased about the house prices going up again are the greedy b@stards who tried to get rich quick on the property market, messing it up for everyone else.

Come on Oscar, try and take the blinkers off. I'm not knocking the good news, but I think its going to take a bit more than this to rescue the British economy and the wider world economy.

Depsite the bad situation, I actually think its better that politicans level with people at times like these and just talk straight, leaving the politcal jargon to one side.

Our PM did that last night at a speech (well he did a better job of being realistic about the problems we have), it was refreshing to hear a BS-free speech for once from Brian I can tell you, we need more of that.

Okay, those are good things, but the drop in Sterling means that the prices of a lot of stuff is now going to go up, not down, and the borrowing requirements as a proportion of GNP will get worse. Again, I am not saying that what Gordon is doing is wrong, no one else in the world really has a clear idea either about what they are doing, some are being cautious, like Germany and France (and Ireland), some are taking some calculated risks like Britain, Australia and the US. No one really knows whats the best policy, because we've never quite been in a situation like this before.

I actually hope the UK economy does pick up, as Gordon claims, as its still our biggest export market, and the pound has regained some ground against the Euro as well, which is good. But you have to look at these things hard, because other side of taking enormous risks is that they will have enormous consequences if they go wrong.

I was at a bio-energy conference yesterday, and it was great to see scientists, entrepreuers, farmers, bankers, and others who are trying to do positive things, while also make money and hopefully a whole new industrial sector, its easy to be overwhelmed with the gloom, but you have to also be realistic about what is happening, as we have lived in la la land when it comes to economics for far too long already.
