Hollywood Blacklist

Post by Kindle »

A black time in U.S. history was the mid-twentieth-century when screenwriters, actors, directors, musicians, and other U.S. entertainment professionals were denied employment in the field because of their political beliefs or associations, real or suspected. Artists were barred from work on the basis of their alleged membership in, or sympathy toward the American Communist Party, and their involvement in liberal or humanitarian political causes that enforcers of the blacklist associated with communism. The time for such witch hunts is past and, hopefully, it will never be allowed to rear its ugly head again.

Let us consider what today’s entertainment field might be like if we were still banning our current Hollywood leftists from working in this field. How many of your favorite movies would not have been made? How would you rate the entertainment that would be offered if they did not contain the talents of people on the list below? How would our lives be impacted by “government deciding what we might be exposed to?

Go on, I'll bite. How do you justify calling Jennifer Aniston a Hollywood leftist?

I didn't make up the list.

The list is off the Net.

I was very surprised with a number of the names on the list.

This arbitrary classification of people is part of what the problem was with the original blacklist.

The 2005 movie "Good Night Good Luck" starring George Clooney is about the Mc Carthy era of suspected commies being everywhere. I rember the hearings and how farcical they were.

Did people talk about it like we are talking about what's happening now? Did anyone feel they could do something about them? Did people feel helpless to stop it for fear they too would be accused? What do you remember people saying about this?

During the times of the Mc Carthy hearings the US and the USSR were busy building their nuclear arsenals and the Cold War was in full swing.

It was only 5 years after the Berlin Air Lift and the wall between East and West Berlin was still there. Russia in many respects was viewed as North Korea is today. Sentiment among the U.S. general population was not pro Russian. Anti communism florished and organizations like "The John Birch Society" was gaining big membership. Do a search on them. Much of the country went along with this fear of the commies and reds under the beds mentality, and don't forget, we had just had a stopping of military activities in Korea (I was there) where those nasty Chinese commies, supported by the Russians were aiding the North Koreans. Many Americans were building bomb shelters during this period to protect against nuclear attack. Given all the foregoing, I think you can see why this Blacklisting came about. That, plus the fact that many of the Hollywood folk of that eara had in the 30's, been members of the (heaven forbid) Communist Party.

There has always been a preponderence of people in the Arts that have been left leaning and that alone is sufficient cause for those right leaners when they are in control and in power to go a bit beserk. By contrast with today---------------the 50's was much much worse.

Why on earth didn't you give a link and acknowledgement of what was copied then? It turns your post into something totally different.

I'm sorry, that sounds far more critical than I intend. If the content of the list isn't yours then you're not in a position to defend it but it would help discover its purpose if the original author were identified. I suspect I find the list outrageous, hence my exploding at it.

Once you questioned it, I realized it looked like I had created this list.

I originally started looking up the names (list of current Hollywood leftists) to see who was considered leftist and just how many of them currently were in Hollywood.

What prompted this search was learning that Tom Hanks was very leftist. This shocked me, disturbed me,and I thought "Well dam, I will make my personal protest (for my own satisfaction only) by not supporting any of his films.

Before committing to this, I felt I should see just how many actors were considered leftist, out in Hollywood, cause if I was going to take such a stand, I should include all the leftists. Well, this resulted in shock after shock when I read through all the many names I found in various lists from the Net.

This then led to wondering about the former blacklists and trying to tie that mindset into today. Hence, the post...............

Now talk to me Spot. Give us your insight.
