Words that end in ERO

Post by spot »

The "Words That End In" franchise

proudly presents

the most successful game thread of all history,

back on ForumGarden by POPULAR DEMAND!

We tried a while ago to post only words which ended in INTH. It was all too brief.

This was followed by INCH. It was an overnight success!

A third outing, of words ending in ONCH, brought out intense rivalry!

We then moved into high gear with words ending in ONCK, the most hard-fought contest to date.

The search for words ending in ANK, was reviewed in Time Magazine as "reminiscent of Mrs Thrale's gatherings".

The subsequent investigation into words ending in ARK induced rule revisions.

The hunt for words ending in ARB was mercifully brief.

The most recent, for words ending in ERB, saw an avalanche of submissions from an international array of players.

In the interests of fair adjudication in this round

every entry must have a sample sentence attached which shows the word employed in a natural English setting

Entries score double if the sample sentence is a legitimate quotation from a published work

Good luck to all our contestants!

Once a name or word has been offered in the thread it may not be offered again. Proper nouns, acronyms and abbreviations, where they lack alternate non-derivative meanings which are neither proper, acronymic or abbreviated, are excluded. Submissions must use current English spelling adjudicated from the Oxford English Dictionary. Consecutive posts within the game thread must not contain submissions from the same player. The use of computer software to generate submissions is forbidden. Relatives and employees of the game's management may not enter. The competition is governed by English Law. The winner of this competition will be entered in the annual ForumGarden Competition Winners' Knock-out Photo Contest. No prize carries financial value exceeding the lowest denomination coin of the realm, for which it may be exchanged at the request of the winner. This is a game of skill without payment of money or money’s worth or the provision of goods or services and does not constitute a lottery, pool, prize game or chain-gift scheme.

I was, I confess, hesitant as to whether this was sufficiently Anglicized but I have found it in A Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle:"Good-bye", he answered, raising his broad sombreroand if it's good enough for Sherlock Holmes it's quite good enough in this context.

I fear I have beaten you to that one.

Might I draw the attention of contestants to the large-letter note in the original post:In the interests of fair adjudication in this round every entry must have a sample sentence attached which shows the word employed in a natural English setting. It's there because of the extraordinary number of Spanish words ending "ERO" which haven't been assimilated into English and are consequently not valid under the "Words That End In" franchise rules.

Does that exist other than as a Proper Noun? If it's only used as the Emperor of that name then the rules prevent its submission being valid.

eta: I apologise, it's also a word describing "a person resembling Nero, especially in displaying cruelty, tyranny, or profligacy" so it's entirely valid.

Idgie, you're pushing the edges of the envelope here. If Chuck Yeager were this far out of bounds he'd be hanging from a parachute.

Either it's assimilated as "The Embarcadero is the eastern waterfront roadway of the Port of San Francisco" - note the capital letter - in which case it's a name and therefore a proper noun, or it's a Spanish word meaning a place to embark and, while you could indeed use your sentence, it hasn't been assimilated into English at all and you're throwing in a bit of local colour.

The judges allow this instance since we're all still grappling with the small print but they note that a tightening up is going to happen pretty soon.

The dictionary gives a single instance from 1850:1850 B. TAYLOR Eldorado xxi. 219 The forest of masts along the embarcadero.so is scrapes in by the skin of its teeth. It also appears in Daniel Collins' "Narrative of the shipwreck of the brig Betsey, of Wiscasset, Maine, and murder of five of her crew, by pirates, on the coast of Cuba, Dec. 1824":the Embarcadero, a kind of thoroughfare to Matanzas for twenty or thirty miles in the interior

And The Memoirs of General W. T. Sherman has a similar use:during the night worked up the creek some twelve miles by means of the tide, to a landing called the Embarcadero

Beppo The contraction of Giuseppe, and therefore equal to our Joe. Husband of Laura, a Venetian lady. He was taken captive in Troy, turned Turk, joined a band of pirates, grew rich, and, after several years' absence, returned to his native land, where he discovered his wife at a carnival ball with her cavaliero servente. He made himself known to her, and they lived together again as man and wife.
