What to do with my yard?

Post by Oscar Namechange »

We have had some good news this week in that some forgotton policies have come to fruition. (Thanks for the help Bryn).

Some money is coming our way and then there is decisions, decisions, decisions on how to spend it wisely.

We have a yard at the side of the house that never gets used and i want to do something with it. Now, we are torn between.....

1) Decking and Patio

2) Bird Aviary

3) Building shelters for Fox rescue

And there i run out of idea's.

What would you do with it? Any suggestions?

Seems rather obvious to me. Keep it open so the angels can bring you more vacuums.

If people are feeling free to dump lawnmowers and vacuums in her yard its her 'redneck' of the woods.

That was a good one right ?

It just came to me.

Do you have any hilly areas ?

Doesnt matter you can buy dirt and build it up.

A small lit waterfall with a pool at the bottom. Natural rock and much foilage surrounding the scenery is luxurious.

In a corner with a stone trail leading to it. Perhaps a circular sitting area with a bench made of a large log.

deck and patio.

-you can still have birds, plant some trees and bushes, they will come there to rest, nest and live.

put out some birdfeeders with sunflower seeds in them.

grow some tall perennial flowers like coneflowers, birds love flowers.

a pond with a waterfall is a beautiful touch.......this also will attract the birds for water.

-but don't forget a bird bath.

Aha, but the puppy can only have 5 mins excersize for each month of its age so it cant run around with the other dogs, would be ideal to have a small run there for the first year of its life would it not? That is if your still thinking about the Staffie mwahahah :sneaky:

I like the pond/waterfall idea. It's a bit of work but well worth the effort. :-6

Thanks for all your interest.

The yard is enclosed and is at the side where it doesn't get much sun so as much as i would love to plant it up, i don't think the plants would do well. It's a square shape and i was thinking tonight that i could have a raised pond, a small bird enclosure as well as a small patio area to sit. I'd love to do some before and after pics to put on here.

Any more ideas?

Some little bell is ringing somewhere saying check out details of pond maintenance - you have to take care of it - sounds like plenty of people here could give sound advice. Know it's great for wildlife, though.

Know it's great for wildlife, though. We have had ponds in previous houses and Koi Carp. Mr O is a bit of an expert on them and when our elderly neighbour goes on holiday, he won't trust his Koi and pond maintenence to anyone else. I'm really beginning to fancy the idea of a Koi pond again and as Odie said, you can get some fabulous ferns for the shade. My bro has the most to die for pond and waterfall all planted up with various kinds of mature bamboo. There's decking to the side to sit as well although the sound of the waterfall makes me want to wee. My yard is no-where the size of bro's Sussex garden but i could replicate on a mini style. He has also been lucky with baby's from his Koi so he has plenty of fish for free. Yes, I'm visulising it now. I could have just a small avairy in the corner with some ''Orange Bishops' (any-one heard of them? in.:-4:-4:-4

what is your zone? The problem with Hosta's Odie is British slugs. I can't put pellets down incase the cats and dogs get in the yard and also the hedgehogs are dying here where they eat slugs that have been poisoned by slug pellets. Ferns would be better. We are in the West Country of Britain if that helps. Good idea but i had to give up on Hosta's once before due to slugs and snails. :-5

wow, didn't know you had slugs.

you would have to google plant nurseries in your area.

they are the best ones for advice and help.

We get the buggers big time. As i can't put pellets down for them i go out in the dark with a torch and bag and pick them up. I can't kill anything so we dump them on the common a mile away. One night, i half filled a carrier bag with them and snails. We only have a fairly small planted up garden at the other side of the house but as we do everything to attract birds as well, we get a fair bit of wildlife come in. Squirrels :-5:-5 Dug up my tulip bulbs and ate them :wah:

there must be some kind of insecticide you can use.

even boiling water will kill anything.

I planted a tulip bed two years ago, but I put chicken wire across it and layed rocks on it until spring.........no squirrels could dig them up then.

they will dig up those and any other bulbs here!:-5:-5

You can always use those Hoovers to help your veggies grow straight up and as for the motorbike...hmmm, they must be useful in some ways.
