I will leave the politics of the Conservative Party out of this one and just say that this is very sad.

To lose a Friend is heartbreaking.

To lose a Parent is hard and takes time to come to terms with.

To lose a Child is something you will never get over and a part of you dies with them.

The Times online'

Gordon Brown suggested the suspension of normal political hostilities today after the death of Ivan Cameron. And when he paid his respects to the six-year-old and offered the condolences of the nation to the Camerons, it was obvious to see why.

Mr Brown, wearing a black tie, was clearly deeply affected by the news. Everyone in the Commons could see that, in voicing his sympathy for his political enemy, he was also reliving the death of his first child, Jennifer. For once the Prime Minister and the man who would take his job have been united by a tragic bond.

There was warm approval from the Conservative benches for Mr Brown's words, which caught the mood of sadness. Mr Brown told MPs: “I know that, in his all too brief life, Ivan brought joy to all those around him, and I know that for all the days of his life he was surrounded by his family’s love. Every child is precious and irreplaceable and the death of a child is an unbearable sorrow that no parent should have to endure.

Mr Brown said he and wife Sarah had sent their condolences to Mr and Mrs Cameron, and knew that the thoughts and prayers of the whole country were with the family.

Now that was a class act and completely appropriate because he is correct. Hubs & I lost a child also but I was only in the first trimester. We were very excited and then the miscarriage happened.:-1 I always remember.

Indeed not.

Life is a very fragile thing, and power, influence, or wealth are no protection from the reality of that fact. Unfortunately in our strange, shrlll, febrile media-driven world we sometimes forget that our leaders are just people with lives and concerns that are nothing to do with their positions.

It was also a reminder that the current British Prime Minister (whether you agree with his politics or not) is also a man who (along with the rest of his family) has suffered a similar personal tragedy, but still gone on and done his job without dwelling on his own personal problems, that is to his credit.

It shows quite starkly the fact that our leaders in the West are for the most part just ordinary people, who also have lives outside of the political and media circus. I am sure that anyone who has children of their own will feel for David Cameron and his Wife at their loss, its a terrible family tragedy for them.

In any case, the man will need time to privately grieve for his son, and hopefully for him, he will feel able to resume his full duties as leader of the Conservative Party in due course.
