this is a dangerous storm, it has killed seven people in florida, and gulf residents should please heed their emergency management people. it may well be a cat 4 by monday.

As Hurricane Katrina churned toward the Gulf Coast today, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued an urgent warning to residents of low-lying areas. Michael Brown said those residents should leave within 36 hours because "beyond that, it's just too late."

i'll be safe BR, thanks, and don't worry! ...new orleans is evacuating, they are very vulnerable. about 10% of the people cannot afford to leave, no cars, no hotel money. all hotels are booked 6 hours out from the city. this has the potential for catastrophe. authorities will let people stay at the superdome.

Cars pack highway leaving New Orleans.

I'm surprised they weren't a wee bit more prepared than this...or perhaps they don't have all that much experience with this type of situation? Just seems they appear to be doing everything last minute. Jesus, a cat 4. That's quite possibly going to cream them. They're more than likely going to be reeling from this for quite some time. The VERY best to everyone anywhere near Katrina's path. Everyone was here for us when Florida got hit and I'm sure they will be for them when all is said and done. Gotta love those rescue teams.

the big easy has not taken a direct hit in 40 years. since they are situated below sea level , they could see 18 to 22 feet of water in the center of town. and yet tonight there are fools partying.

Heheh...well, hell. It's a partying town! With this hurricane though, 'trashed' could be a whole new meaning for them.

May they all fare well.

Edit: I heard tonight they are expecting it to come in at 145mph.

...

Hurricane Katrina has top sustained winds of 160 mph, making it a Category 5, the highest possible ranking for a storm. Katrina is on track to hit at or near New Orleans, Louisiana, early Monday, according to forecasters. Storm surge of 15 to 20 feet above normal tide levels is predicted along the Gulf Coast.

I'm coming in late on this, so apologies for any rehash. Do we have any Gardeners in that area? I read about your family, Bez. I'm praying they'll come out all right.

Isn't there a map in here somewhere showing where the Gardeners live? I thought I saw one some time ago.

I want everyone to be safe and get out of the way. I have to say though that the power of mother nature is quite awesome and I am always fascinated by storms of this magnitude.

When I was in Okinawa I had the privilege of seeing many typhoons up close & personal. It's amazing to see a banyan survive for years & suddenly get plucked out of the ground by a typhoon no stronger than any other.

here's something i don't understand......the hurricane is expected to make landfall, at its worst, sometime monday morning, early. the video i've seen of the freeways shows bumper to bumper leaving new orleans, in some instances at a standstill. but worse, the other side of the freeway is nearly vacant. with that much time left, and a disaster of these proportions imminent, i can't understand why they aren't coning off three or more of the inbound lanes, and turning it into outbound. yeah, it's a long way out, but with this situation, it seems to me it's critical to get these people out, and having half the roadway essentially vacant seems crazy.

Anastrophe, i have wondered the same thing...when the keys need to be evacuated, and other florida venues as well, they do precisely that.

I just read on another message board. AOL message boards that people are afraid that the graves will be flooded since they don't bury people under the ground. Thats what I call a grave situation. I know it's not funny but I thought I tell you. We ar all praying for Louisana and for all those effected by the storm.

That's not the highway to go all the way out. A reporter said there's an interchange at I-10. Only 1 lane & they've been requested to snake out like that to speed things up.

ah, that makes more sense. having no familiarity at all with n'orleans, it's hard to know what exactly we're looking at.

I had heard they were closing all inbound highways to New Orleans so they could be used to ease the evacuation.

i know they would appreciate your sentiments....local emergency people are in for a very rough time and my thoughts are with them as well. when Andrew hit miami, my cousin, a woman firefighter/EMT , lost her baby due to round-the-clock duty. :-1

Oh how sad. I'm terribly sorry. I am always very aware and appreciative of the efforts of all the troops, cops and those supporting personnel that most are just considered of 'doing their job'. It's a hell of a job and sacrifice. And in the aftermath of this thing there will be people working round the clock to get things back to normal....adjusting their lives to help those who need it. They all are 'heros' in my mind. And god bless 'em. Like I said, without giving people like that, we would all be in one hell of a mess.

I've seen it and while I am not an engineer it seems to me the design would act as an airfoil much like an airplane wing as long as the outer lip doesn't get lifted. Any engineers here care to comment. I admit stupidity in this area.
