Is it possible to live with less? What truly matters?
One way to see what it's like to live with less is to take Suze Orman's three-step money pledge:
• Don't spend any money for a day.
• Don't use your credit card for a week.
• Don't eat out in restaurants for a month.
How well would you do following these three rules?
For me, one and two would not be a problem, but to not eat out in a restaurant for a month would be a killer! Socializing revolves around food. I'd have to change my way of life.

No adjustments to make here, I do all three quite often.

Not spending money for a day will not do anything, what is the benefit of holding off buy stuff for a day? You will only need to get it the next day.
Regarding credit cards, it does not matter how often you use it, what is important is that you are able to clear the balance each month and are not buying beyond your means. So sure, don’t use your credit card for a week, but as long as you are not over spending the other weeks.
The restaurant I can live with, but it depends on how much you eat out in the first place to begin with.

I do these three things all the time. I spend money once or twice a week-do all the shopping and bills. Never carry cash and won't use a credit card unless it's an emergency. And we go out to eat maybe once or twice a year now.
Times are tough for everyone.

I can't do the first one which is spend money on a certain day. Need my smokes, etc.
Credit cards? - Don't own one
Restaurants - We go out for late lunch maybe 6 times a year.

Interesting. I would have thought the eating out would be the problem for people................................ I think this might be worth a thread to find out about this.

does she follow that too?
we don't own credit cards so that's not an issue and I'm not giving up eating out on the weekend, it's a break for me and a nicety for the whole family and not really a big difference in price to feed a family of 4 anyway. :-6

ours are still in the kids price range wherever we go so really by the time I would buy all the extra food to cook on weekends as well it would pretty much be the same (and I'd be cranky!)

Me too. I go shopping every couple of days and buy enough food for a couple of days, so that nothing is wasted or left to go off. I haven't used my credit card since Christmas and the last time I went to a restaurant was for the office Christmas party. I can't even remember the time before that.
I sometimes take home a McDonalds for the family and occasionally a Domino's pizza (2 for the price of 1) but thats about it. It's not a case of saving money, if you haven't got it you just can't spend it.

I think a lot of senior citizens also eat out often because if they go early, use coupons and choose the specials, it is cheaper than eating in and without the muss and fuss.
I also have seen them ask for more rolls to be able to pocket them for later
and some of them even take sugar and jelly/jam packets to supplement their home supplies..................
