Number of urban foxes being trapped and kills rises by four-fold - Telegraph

This makes an absolute mockery of the people who fought to have fox hunting out-lawed.

We have these animals being trapped and killed because some idiot complains about the noise they make....... it's simple...... don't buy a house that's been built on greenbelt.

If you come near my foxes then i'm afraid you will end up in hospital and i'll be in prison.

You could always throw one of your vaccuums at them:wah:. They do the same here...peeps move out of the city and then to a nice huge house out in the burbs and complain when they see skunks, raccoons & especially deer. Duh!

It's because of this..... we don't tell anyone round here where are foxes are or whan time they come. Urban foxes don't do anything to deserve this..... it's just persecution from stupid people.

It is their instinct to survive to feed. People are so un-educated about them. It's the same as the idiots who have farms and then complain about foxes. Put an electric fence round your farm...... simple.

Well our probs is idiots who move out of the city and near farms and then complain about the manure smell, deer, raccoons, foxes, etc. My brother has foxes near his house...they love it.:-4 And the noise they make is very distinctive.

I moved here 12 yrs ago because it was countryside and i actually wanted to be where foxes, badgers and birds live. They built 10,000 houses in the last ten years and another 12,000 are going up. I appreciate we are a growing population and we need houses but it's when they complain that there is wild-life in their back yard. We need some mountain puma's, hawks and poisionous spiders to give them some-thing to really complain about.

Have you ever chatted with Idgie & Mustang? They get all these animals in their yards and they love it.:-4 I get the occasional raccoon. Well, I probs get them every night but don't notice them. Now the skunk, he's noticeable:lips:. Never have had a deer in the yard (knock on wood).

I have to buy 16 chicken quarters every day as it is for the foxes. Then they get through about 24 eggs every 3 or 4 days and any leftovers.

Wow! Yeah, Idgie & Mustang also feed all their animal friends. The animals I get don't have to bother me as they invade my trash cans on a daily basis.:wah: They've eaten right through the lids of the cans:-5

Scrat;1149446 wrote: Funny this should come up. I was listening to the news just this morning and they were spreading terror about a "marauding vicious gang" (they used the word gang, not pack) of coyotes in some park here that attacked a womans German shepard.

What got me was the way it was portrayed by the media. There was no visit to the vet by the owner for the shepard but the "trauma" of the "brutal gang attack" warrented a visit to the owners doctor for no doubt a perscription of some kind.

There was no intelligent information of dogs or coyotes, no intelligent factual commentary from the woman (go figure) and the reporters used the words brutal, vicious, bloody, attack, mauling ect in at least half the content.

Yeah the coyotes probably picked a fight, they were probably juveniles and didn't want the dog on their turf, but really, no one was hurt. The coyotes didn't attack the woman.

The hype when something like this happens just spreads unreasonable fear and does nothing to dispell the ignorance.

Muscovites live with packs of stray dogs in their city (they have butt sniffing conventions at the Kremlin) and rarely do people get bit. You see them riding the metro, sleeping at stations and even running in packs through the parks.

Good luck with your foxes, people can be pretty stupid at times. Best they learn to live with them and don't put the puddy tat out at night. Thanks for that Scrat.... nice to know not all people see them as 'vermin'. My lot are highly intelligent and the one thing that gets me about them is when in England, we put our clocks back or forward an hour in summer and winter. How do they know??? Beats me but they just turn up at the same time every night.

I know what you mean about the way the media portray them. They get blamed for spreading mange and being members of 'vicious gangs of thugs'. Like most wildlife, they are more frightened of us than we are them.

I've often seen next door's cat out with the pack waiting for me to come out with the food. It dispels the myth that they kill for fun. If they have enough to eat like my pack does, they have no disire to kill.

It made me laught a few nights ago when i was ill. Mr O went out to them with the usual food and some left overs of our dinner. In the morning, the whole lot was gone except for a perfect pile of peas. Guess peas are off the menu then? :wah:

I just found this on a site:

Derbyshire Fox Rescue

Foxes and cats.

'Whilst we would not suggest that foxes will never kill cats what we can say is there has never been a reported case of this happening. Usually foxes and cats have a mutual respect for one another. The time of year when calls peak are usually around March / April / May. People will view a fox chasing a cat and wrongfully assume that the fox is looking to kill the cat to feed her cubs. What is happening however that whilst cubs are still very young and underground cats will show a very unhealthy interest in them. If the cat was to get to the young cubs it would kill them. A vixen looking after her cubs will chase cats away from the earth. Calls again then peak usually around July where householders are claiming that a pack of foxes is going around terrorising cats. Since foxes do not hunt in packs we can assume its a family of cubs learning their way around their territory. On discovering a cat they tease the cat, in the countryside the badger is usually the one that the foxes will tease, one would never believe that the young cubs were looking to kill the badger! Once the cubs have met with the ferocity of a cat they learn quickly to avoid them.

If a fox finds a dead cat on the road it will take it away to eat. Any person observing this will assume that the fox has killed the cat. We have observed on many occasions foxes carrying marrow bones, never do we conclude the fox has killed the cow!

If more than one fox is present when this cat has been discovered, and since foxes are so selfish with their food, an argument over who's it is will commence. Remembering on many occasions that the police have been called out thinking someone's being attacked and killed because the foxes are so vocal, it is easy to assume that the foxes are killing the cat since that's what it sounds like.'

Good pic of a fox with cat:

True. I have heard a vixen in heat but you have never heard anything like my 3 dogs kicking off in the night :wah::wah:

I just wish i could get my foxes on camera. If Mr O goes out to them, the back too far off and i can't hold a tray of food, a flashlight and a camera all in one go. I've tried before and as it's so dark outside my house, I've just got pics of red eyes starring at me. Gill suggested one of these miners head lamp type so i've been looking ou for them.

Scrat;1149491 wrote: Well thankyou for enlightening me!! I though that foxes would kill cats, it never entered my mind that they will tolerate one another. We don't have many foxes here. Coyotes here see cats as just another type of rabbit and a cat out at night is one of two things, smart or a meal.

There are smart cats here, I have seen them running like greased lightning for home or tree at a rustling behind the hedges. You would assume a fox would kill a cat wouldn't you? I went out to mine one night and there was about 6 of them sat in a semi circle with some more on the edge, I put the food on the ground and next door's cat whippped in and grabbed a chicken nugget before the foxes knew he was there. I think it's also fact that a fox would not fight a dog unless the dog went near her cubs. My dogs have been nose to nose at the fence with the foxes before and neither take any notice of each other. Coyotes are another breed all together and i think far more aggressive than the fox.

All we need is some foxes. You are soooo lucky....... how i wish i had that lot. We get some hawks, Buzzards, kestrel, sparrowhawk and now American Harris Hawks are mating in the wild here. They are quite awesome. The anglers here do nothing but whinge about otters taking their fish stocks. They are protected here but i'd love to live some-where with that lot in my back yard. I get pesky squirrels....they have a lot to answer to :-5

I just been out to my foxes. The strange new ones were there tonight. I tried getting a pic but it's impossible with flashlight, food etc all being juggled. They also love the dried dog food, we buy that for them as it's got all the vitimins they need. If you over feed them, they bury the excess. Our old neighbour came over one morning with a sausage i9n his hand he'd just dug up in his potatoe bed :wah:

I was pondering today and i've been on the web trying to find some answers and can't find anything on it. I'm sure all my foxes are of the same family but usually the babes get to a certain age and make off. Over the years, our numbers just increase as they have the babes but i'm at a loss as to why these newbie's have suddenly appeared. All foxes have their own territory and i can't make out why they have come onto my foxes territory. They seem to know they are on others ground as they hang back until the regulars have had first pick at the food. It's very odd..... anyone got any clue's????

There is no excuse to let a fox suffer from mange. If you contact these people they will send you the treatment. Only a fox will take and eat a jam sandwich which you put the dose in. They will send you this treatment free of charge.

NFWS Fox Rescue and Sarcoptic Mange Information Site-We also supply mange treatment for foxes suffering from Sarcoptic Mange known also as Canine Mange and Fox Mange

If you see one suffering near you, please do this. Thankyou :)
