What a pillock!
What a pillock!
So, there I am this afternoon with a pupil who has her driving test next week who's doing really well.
'What would you like to practise today?' says I.
'Emergency stops' says she.
Off we go to a nice quiet road, 'Stop!' I tell her so she does.
Really quickly.
Ping goes my back, I wince but keep quiet and tell her 'That was really good, you don't need to do that again today'
'Has anyone ever given their examiner whiplash?' she asks.....................
Ouch! Memo to self, don't sit twisted in the seat when practising emergency stops! :yh_rotfl

They sure do. It has to be controlled without skidding too though with ABS it's harder to skid nowadays. I'm sure grateful for ABS. Makes a lot of difference in an emergency stop.

I did mine on a side-road off the North Circular, going downhill in the wet. It was a harsh test I thought.

They do, and it's amusing as they find a nice quiet road, spent a few seconds looking all around, announce that at some point they are going to request you perform an 'emergency stop' when they hit the dash with their big black clipboard. You can't help but be aware of them checking all round a couple more times then raising the clipboard,
I'm sure my foot was on the brake before his clipboard hit the dash :wah::wah:

Far more fun during the bike test. The examiner asks you to drive round the block and says that, at some point, he will step out in front of you - from behind a tree of all things.
You do hear tales of injured examiners but far less often than you'd think :yh_rotfl

ABS is fantastic on wet days when the pupils don't quite have the idea of gently releasing the clutch!

My pupil who had a test on Tuesday, dry day, didn't have to do an emergency stop, depends on how sadistic the examiner is!

At least they'll quickly learn it's easier on the stomach muscles to move one foot at a time (hopefully they'll stamp on the brake pedal first:)). Then they'll experience the difference between stopping with the help of engine braking and without.

If it works, that's the main thing. The panic that goes with an emergency stop in real life cannot be simulated so, in my mind, practise makes perfect.
