Third Hand Smoke
Third Hand Smoke
We all know the health hazards of smoking, yet so many continue to pollute their bodies and our air with this filth.
The Surgeon General of the United States has insured that a warning be placed on each package of cigarettes, but addition to this weed overwhelms the good sense of people.
We have also been educated about the hazards of second hand smoke and so most public buildings, restarants and bars are now prohibiting this foul practice in their establishments. Parents think they are protecting their offsprings from the harm of cigarette smoke by smoking outside or blowing their smoke out a car window.
But now, we are learning that all these 'precautions' are not enough. The toxins in cigarettes stick to the hair, clothes, carpets etc and are picked up by the unsuspecting -- many of whom are children.
Among the substances in third-hand smoke are hydrogen cyanide, used in chemical weapons; butane, which is used in lighter fluid; toluene, found in paint thinners; arsenic; lead; carbon monoxide; and even polonium-210, the highly radioactive carcinogen that was used to murder former Russian spy Alexander V. Litvinenko in 2006. Eleven of the compounds are highly carcinogenic.
Knowing how harmful smoking is to the health of people and the suffering and misery it can cause, why is it that people continue to purchase this poison?
Why are young people today, who know all these risks, continuing to develop this bad, and very expensive, habit?

I'll see if I can find some references when I have more time. The NHS group I attended back in 2005 to quit smoking told us that some of the chemicals put in cigarettes are designed to hook us. It's as simple as that. Tobacco, or the nicotine by-product created by burning it, is relatively non-addictive.

That's interesting. I shall look further into this also. If it is true that they add an additive to cigarettes to hook people, it must be that they cannot yet prove it or else someone would be suing the cigarette companies over it.

Over here in the UK, there's enough warnings on packs that the tobacco companies are covered. They didn't force us to smoke a cigarette in the first place so it's not their fault we become addicted.

"Any Hand" smoke should not be tolerated! Drug abuse is illeagle cause it's addictive & harmful to the individuals using it. Ciggies should be made illeagle as well, for the same reasons! :-2

Despite repeated warnings regarding the risk of unwanted pregnancy, Aids,
and other sexually transmitted diseases, people also continue to engage in unprotected, vile, and disgusting fornicating.
The side effects of this dirty past time, are millions of dollars spent by the government to care for orphans, and millions in health care for the sick and dying.
I think that all unprotected, sexual activity should be illegal, and that mandatory government survailance systems should be installed everywhere, in everyones home to monitor this behavior that costs us all dearly. In an effort to insure that everyone uses condoms.
Obesity should be illegal for many of the same reasons.
Gambling of any sort should be on the list as well. Including lottery tickets.
Infidelity should be a crime punishable by the death sentence.
Broken homes produce yet more children who become candidates for welfare. Not to mention the psychological damage that often produces monsters who go out and harm other members of society.
There are those who do find smoking disgusting, and offensive. It is so regulated now, that it is very easy to avoid drifting second hand smoke. So, just stay away from it.
Why the continued and obsessive mission to crucify smokers? I only wish that I were so perfect, that I could feel justified to focus in on all behaviors of my fellow men, that I find to be unacceptable.

I can't speak for others, but what brought this to the forefront of my mind was hearing my closest lifelong friend was in the hospital last week and her being diagnosed with beginning stages of emphysema. She's smoked all her life. Tried very hard to stop, but couldn't, though she had cut down.
Yes it was "her choice", but her choice also affects her family and friends. I'm angry that this has happened to her, but I cannot unburden myself on her, and so I want and need to vent and have targeted the one thing in her life she could not control.

If so, you're slowly killing yourself (faster then normal) as well as all the others with the vices you mentioned.

One of my mothers friends was a health addict. fitest person you'd be ever likely to meet. But you won't because he dropped dead of a heart attack on one of his runs:)

Whether or not I smoke is not the point. The point is behaviors being controlled by the government, and citizens condeming each other for behavior that they find unacceptable. I gag when I see obesce people eating fast food. I shudder when I see young people tatooed and pierced.
I am frightened to death for anyone who is promiscuous. I admit to having unbridled anger at slum lords. Seeing elderly people on a bus headed to Atlantic City with their social security checks, makes me nauseous.
I am certain that smokers dont light up, with the intent to hurt others.
They dont want to hurt themselves either. But the anomosity constantly being directed at them is irrational and ridiculous. I often think that the reason this habit is targeted is because its the one behavior that can be viewed. If we could see behind closed doors, we would be able to see many behaviors that harm others, and then these people could be targeted too.
As far as causing pain to loved ones, what about the diabetic who continues to consume sugar, and dies a horrible death. Amputation? Blindness?
Should they be forced to have their mouths sewn shut, and be fed a government mandated diet?
Lets make pornography the new mission. Keeping it off the shelves, stopping the sale of it. Stoning anyone whose on line to watch a porno film. It hurts everyone. And it is the smut that fuels the mind of rapists, pedophiles, degenerates, and women haters.

My health is not jepardized by any of the activities mentioned unless they need medical care for their choices and do not have insurance.
Smokers on the other hand do polute the air and do not give non-smokers a choice of whether they wish to rish breathing/lung problems.
If smokers could smoke and not polute, I'd say "Smoke away". When your choices make me cough, irritate my eyes and stuff up my head, then I think we need to look at how I too can choose what I want to breathe, or not.

This just isn't true anymore.
It is illegal to smoke in all public businesses including bars and saloons. It is illegal to smoke within something like 50 or 100 feet of any entrance to a public building. It is illegal to smoke in a car with children and in some states it is illegal to smoke in a home with children . All the while our government is passing all these laws against adults partaking of a legal product and taxing the bejeezus out of said product , they are handing the automakers billions of our tax dollars to continue to make more automobiles . The car you and I drive puts out a lot more pollution that makes you cough, irritates your eyes and stuffs up your head then a dozen lit cigarettes.

This is the hypocrisy of the whole business with the governments. They've been taxing tobacco sales since God knows when. If everyone gave up smoking together, the governments would definitely notice the difference to their tax inputs. So, rather than lose these inputs, they don't make tobacco illegal like other drugs (marijuana for instance), but make a big issue out of it passing laws, etc. to show their 'concern' for public health.
The individuals of the smoking community are made to feel self-conscious by having to go outside to smoke which they do religiously in whatever weather because the contents of that cigarette package are designed to keep them dependent on that fix.

Not entirely correct! There are several Casino's that we patronize, that are contained on "Indian Reservation Land"! (Both here in FL & in NE)Therefore, the "Government" does not dictate the laws for/in those casino's, and "smoking" is allowed!!! And when some guy lights up a real stinky cigar, I have to get up & move far away to another location in the casino! "His rights", usurped my right to clean air!!! That stinks, excuse the punn!! :wah:

Thought this was a wonderful response!
While it is true smokers are playing their part in cutting time of their lifespan, the simple fact is that no-one intends to get atticted to any substance. Most smokers today will tell you that they wished they could kick the habit, or that they never started all them years ago. Still, others enjoy it.
But look at what is happening here, while it is now socially unacceptable to smoke in public (a fact that i don't mind at all), there's a stark difference in societies views on those hooked on legal drugs to those on illegal substances.
There is so much more in the way of support for people who have filled their blood with illegal chemical cocktails, and many of who have criminal records because of their need to feed their habit. I am a smoker, tried to quit a couple of times and failed - still i'd never steal some old pensioners purse to get a pack of ciggies. Don't you think there's something wrong with the system then? If smoking is so bad for us (and it is!), why are they putting the addictive chemicals in them......it's all about the money honey! No smokers = no profits!
All we can do is educate our children, that it is not cool to puff away. To inform them what they are made of, and pray they listen to us. In reality, people will do their own thing anyway.

The reason that the government continues ro ***** foot around with making smoking illegal ia that they prefer to use the smoke screen of second hand smoke to keep ciizens from acknowledging the hoardes of polutants in our enviornment that are making them sick.
Chemical waste from factories.
Waste expelled into the air and water by industry.
Chemicals and antibiotics in water and food.
Additives in food
Polluted water supply.
Pesticides and herbicides spread over the ground.
Drugs with horrendous side effects.
Surgerys that disrupt the endocrine system and cause disease.
As always they rely on the stupidity and fanaticism of people to distract from the pertinent and potentially deadly issues.
Close the factories?
Close down industry?
Spend the money to clean up our water supply?
Stop spreading chemicals?
Hurt the income of health facilities performing surgery?
Control the pharmecutical industry?
Examine CHEMO Therapy??
I dont think so.
And so lets wage an all out war on those particular individuals unfortunate enough to have gotten hooked on a substance smoked by the first people to ever land on our shores. Label them pariahs, killing everyone around them with that dirty bit of smoke that wafts into the air.
Thats right their to blame for all of the cancer and sickness and illness that befalls everyone.
Lets get em!!!

That stinks, excuse the punn!! :wah:
Yup, my mistake. there are several casinos on Indian Reservation Land here also . It has been so long since I have hit a casino i had forgot that smoking is still allowed in most casinos. But it is so 'frowned ' on that I don't even take my cigs. in with me anymore. now, if i am siting at a 'one armed bandit' or a roulette wheel and there are 2 or more smokers around me I will bum a cig. , my justification being there wouldn't be any non smokers close .

There are no savage and civilised peoples; there are only different cultures.

Weeder,
I like your style. Tell it as it is! Of course you are 100% spot on here, when i think of the illness around that were not heard of 10 - 20 years ago. Only some of which can be explained by viral mutations and the like. The increase in breathing conditions including Athsma, bronchitis, or other mysterious "allergies", these are a direct result of pollution. Other conditions including some versions of ADHD, and many "behavioural disorders" can be explained by the quality of nutrition, additives (especially orange coloring), are making our kids a little crazy. There's a whole other argument about the quality of food in the chain, pumped full of hormones and unnatural junk in order to preserve, present and make taste better.
Eat organic, drink bottled water - we'll all live healthier, happier lives!

Surgerys that disrupt the endocrine system and cause disease......
Very good point. There is a lot in our environment that needs to be addressed. Making people aware of all these things is a good first step to change.

Funny, not one of those mentioned hoardes of polutants made me have get up off my chair, but the guy's stinky cigar did make me have to move!
Is it right for someone who does not want to be subjected to that stench to have to be forced put up with it?!
